[ Newt has begun collecting things, he doesn't want to make this place home, he's certain they're in another one of WCKD's tricks. Everything he's collected has been in attempt to prepare himself for whatever way of escape Thomas has planned. A soundproofed backpack is currently what he's been haggling for, but he'd already managed to acquire a belt, duct tape and (stolen) leather from a car seat to make a sheath for the knife he'd stolen from food prep, and a less intimidating item required to survive the scorch (in his opinion) - a scarf. The white fabric that he kept constantly dangling over his shoulders, in case of another dust storm that wanted to steal the colour from his vision, doesn't exactly match the rust coloured jumpsuit he's wearing, but it doesn't exactly not match either (especially now with how the dust has begun to stain it coppery).
His trek out into the dust storm began out of worry for his friends. Part of him worries it's some sort of ruse to snatch his friends away. The scarf is wrapped snugly around his face, blocking his nose and mouth from the dust, leaving him to squint into the dust.
What he sees, is alarming to say the least, he can make out two figures, and the second one brandishing a knife that looks like it's about to go into the other's back. He doesn't have much time to think about whether he's helping the good guy or the bad guy before he's sprinting forward, his uneven gait silenced enough by the sand and the current storm. His shoulder slams into the attacker before they can drive the knife into Klaus. The action takes Newt and the armed man to the ground and it's not until he's struggling with the guy on the ground that he realises the knife isn't a knife but a whittled down piece of wood, made into a stake -- a much smaller version of the spears from the Glade.
Don't mind him Klaus, struggling wildly with the hand that has a stake in it. Despite how lanky he is, Newt is quite strong and that shows in the way he gets the stake turned around on the attacker and slams his body weight into an attack that leaves the point of it embedded in the man's shoulder. It's an attack that isn't quite meant to kill. When Newt sees the red dust leaking out of the guy, he pushes himself off of him, stumbling back to his feet. ]
