[ Poe mostly saw himself as a pilot. But when he wasn't in a ship he had to do something else. He could lead a small group but then he had a weakness to play hero. With being here there are risks he would rather not have anyone else take. In a way, him sacrificing himself for the group was better in his opinion. No one else had to die if things went wrong. He would take the chance of coming back to the Reset Room.

War was new to him, only one person really had a lot of experience. Poe should have been listening more. It's what he thinks about when there's nothing but silence. Any other mission he was on his own taking bigger risks that he was used to doing. He wasn't the type to not finish a job though. ]

I can see how that would be a really tough battle. If it chose someone you wouldn't want to fight, you would need someone to take over to do so.
