INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

ahhh yeah its like that at home
but rules can be bent sometimes yknow, theyre not always supposed to be totally followed

[ Well, that is kind of the point of rules, Naruto... It's just that often he either ignores them completely or finds ways to dodge them. Most of the time it's the former, though. ]

When the best trickster in the universe tells you what he wants you to do, you either have to be really confident you can out smart him or you play along until you can.

[Considering how much of his life was some not very funny joke in order to get him where he is today, he's not risking it yet.]
poodlemom: (Gonna have to find our boy a new job)

[personal profile] poodlemom 2018-01-23 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
All the more reason to get out of here and find him. [that's the best Victor can think of, to swing the thought toward something positive. If Victor didn't have Yuuri, he'd be far more gungho about getting home. There was comfort in having his fiance around, but it also meant he needed to be more careful, be safe and only take measured risks. He can be tenacious and smart about their circumstance, with Yuuri around to ground him.]
poodlemom: (Now that's a boy I could get into)

[personal profile] poodlemom 2018-01-23 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Victor can put two and two together, seeing the 'Eraserhead' username above Aizawa's text.]

Is that where the name comes from? You erase powers?
poodlemom: (Perfect beautiful business child)

[personal profile] poodlemom 2018-01-23 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
his username is 'eraserhead' in the system, said that is his hero name. He was surprised that I didn't know about pro super heroes, like it's a commonplace job. He was clear about not being police, but it sounded like he was describing law enforcement

you used to superheroes waltzing around? I'm sure not!
poodlemom: (Perfect beautiful business child)

[personal profile] poodlemom 2018-01-23 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, that's heavy. I've never seen a war, everything is pretty peaceful far as I've known it. Guess it's harder out in space, with so much more happening.

[Victor is from a clean and unburdened version of things, never having to worry much about serious subjects. His is the kind of world most people would be jealous of, but only because they want that kind of future for themselves and their children. There's a serious level of luxury in getting to live his life as a professional athlete. All Victor's struggles have been internal and self imposed, he could have quit at any time. He never had, too in love with his craft to do anything else, but there's privilege in being given the choice.]
poodlemom: (I'm a fancy boy)

You are.... you'll keep me from being too reckless I bet, [another snuggle into the side of Yuuri's hair before planting a quiet kiss there]

Wanna try out that bed? [Victor.....] I am exhausted, this has been a lot. I'll sleep sounder beside my Yuuri.

The name came from a friend.

[The literal answer. If he felt particular pedantic he would stop there since he's officially answered a question.]

That's probably what he had in mind, though.

[It gave a decent enough explanation without him going into any details. Details were dangerous, details were the kind of thing that could be used against a hero but just the general idea of "he erases stuff" wouldn't be too bad.]
kiljoy: (aka understanding)

[personal profile] kiljoy 2018-01-23 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[With the exception of the phones, nothing he's seen here has been beyond the technological capabilities of his own world. Also, wouldn't space ships be ridiculously noisy? So he finds the prospect unlikely, but hey if she wants to go on a journey of discovery into the unknown all by herself... He nods. He's down with that.]

Good luck. What's your name?
kiljoy: (aka that's news)

[personal profile] kiljoy 2018-01-23 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Kilgrave nods in response. Okay, that's interesting. This conversation is worth continuing.]

What type of magic? And what do you scout for?

[Ignis isn't really sure of the thought process of the people here. What good is it to have them here?]

Indeed. It's in our best interests to work together as a group.

[Most of them would be working towards the same goal. Freedom.]
dryeyes: wildly different connotations (both mean very similar things)

[personal profile] dryeyes 2018-01-23 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[I suppose when there isn't really a way to "close" her eyes, looking away would have to work. He recognizes the gesture, though. That wasn't a sort of nostalgic looking away, like someone about to go into a story. He takes note of the features of the body, recognizes it's for combat, then returns his eyes to her face.]

I can't say I've experienced anything like it. [For all the danger he'd put himself in, he kept his limbs. They were battered and scarred but still there. He can't imagine that feeling extending to the entire body. He can't imagine feeling anything other than belonging in his body.] I'm familiar with the idea.

... I doubt there's any way to ease that sensation here. [So, it's not his job to, it's not his job to pry too deeply. There were too many perplexing elements of "used to" being human, an artist in a body clearly designed for combat, and wondering if a brain, a spirit, or- some part of him considers- a very deluded AI piloting it. Whatever they were, they could at least work together.]

[It's a lot of thought for not much actually said. When he does speak, the sentences come out evenly, there are just pauses between them, pauses for thoughts, where sometimes he could jump quickly back to another topic.]

If the body's designed for the battlefield, are you capable of fighting? [Is it built into the body or simply a product of the person controlling it?]
dryeyes: like a fucking coma (believe me)

[personal profile] dryeyes 2018-01-23 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[That should be the end of it, really. He offered help, it wasn't needed, conversation over. Still, the way Victor was... nuzzling (disgusting). "Used to this"... He considers for a moment, before continuing the line of questioning.]

Idiotic drunks or him specifically?

[Lys, already a rapt audience, responds appropriately: leaning back, eyebrows raising, expression appreciably awed, amazed, astounded!!!]

woah!
that sounds incredible!
you must be really amazing to have survived something like that, mister carpet
miss carpet??
either way!

It's the writing system you use. In my world, Japan is the only place that writes like this.

Other countries write like this
[ she changes the font to latin letters for just that one English word ] or like это, to name only a few examples.

[ Miach really wonders what kind of place the 'land of fire' is. Contrary to Naruto's assumption, he really doesn't look at all like he's from Japan to Miach. With all the strict regulations for a publicly acceptable appearance that Miach is used to, Naruto would stick out like a sore thumb. ]

[Being able to almost match his height makes it easier to coordinate their movements. While Alex attends to the second shutter, Lys focuses on oiling each and every hinge, gliding the paintbrush silently over metal, holding the paintcan between her teeth by the handle.

Between strokes, she'll notice his scrutiny and eventually pause, looking from him to the shutters and plucking slowly at her jumpsuit with an inquiring expression, hoping he'll get her meaning: maybe they could somehow tear off ribbons of cloth from their sleeves?]

[ Now that she has confirmation, Miach gives the idea of a human mind in a machine body further serious contemplation.

'They're turning our bodies to data' has been something she said a lot, and while it holds true for her world, it is not quite as literal. Even when a million spy molecules run through your blood stream, your shape is still the same that was always yours. It's the first time Miach consciously appreciated this small upside. ]

Don't you find it relieving to be here, removed from where any servers can reach your software?

1. old-fashioned? why do you say that?

[She's not offended at all, only curious. Some flavor of monarchy-feudalism is the only government she's ever known.]

3. oh, thank you! i'm pretty confused too
[and scared, but admitting that would be sharing the burden, and Fuck That] but i'm sure we'll figure out the answers we need if we work together! and if we're careful
4. would you mind teaching me how? i'd like to learn, if we can get the supplies. i wouldn't care if you messed up!
5. "ranger" makes sense....we're also monks, so i guess now we're ranger monks

[ So that's it.

Understanding dawns on Miach and makes her pause. She doesn't remove her hand from Tuan, she just stands there quiet for a moment, adjusting the thoughts in her head.

I must be hungry she thinks, because when the world isn't as crystal clear to navigate to her as it usually is, lack of food is most often the cause.

She'd never considered that Tuan might be angry about the way she arranged this situation. In Miach's mind, the idea that she had been successful should have been an inspiration to her left behind friends. An example for what they failed to do, leading them to more resolve. This isn't how it worked out and now is the first time Miach is forced to acknowledge that. ]

Dian Cécht is no better than Japan. Worse, actually.

[ Surveillance 24/7, a limited space to move in, more doctor appointments than there had been morality sessions before... ]

But that's not what you're talking about, are you? This is about the mere fact that I'm alive.

[Lys gives that jar what must be the hungriest look in the world. She would also do this ten seconds after polishing off a seven-course dinner, or a cake the size of her head. It's a look not unlike that worn by a stray dog caught nosing through an overturned garbage can. But after a long pause, she shakes her head.

Out comes the device! Because some things couldn't be adequately explained with mere gestures.]
