INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

[Faith had on a whim decided to follow the man in the hat. There had been jack all to do at this party and his beckoning had a least been more interesting than sitting around staring at one another doing nothing like this was some awkward middle school dance. And if he'd been planning on leading innocent people into his house to murder or to unspeakable things to them, then she could handle that.

Part of her had actually hoped that had been his intention, just to give her an excuse to punch something or someone to let off some steam. But no. It had been to give her a bottle of booze. Err. Alright.]

[Sitting down to open the bottle- she gave it a sniff. Even the sniff burned her nostrils. That was some strong shit, whatever it was. Glancing at Jessica, she shrugged, texting back.]
Nothing that I know I gave? [Maybe he'd done something she wasn't aware of?]

[Well at least he got a laugh. That actually relaxes him some. He's supposed to keep most of this a secret but secrets were for people with more self control than Aaron. Still, it's a bit much for first impressions.

As for being weird, he's not sure if she means weird like he means weird.]

Okay, I'm a bit more than suburban weird. I just need to get used to this place before I show off everything I can do, you know? I just have some tricks to help me out if things get real bad.

[ It's not like Mike really cares about Frank's opinion (read: he totally does) and it's not like he's waiting almost nervously for Frank to say his fort sucks or that what he's been doing has been a total waste of time (it's what he imagines his dad would say)...

Except Frank makes the OK sign and a feeling of pride comes over himself, like handing in homework and getting a good grade.

Once Mike is done quietly draping the blankets over his structure as well as laying them underneath, Mike types Frank a message. ]

I made this for my friend Eleven.

[ And then he thinks of something he feels the need to ask Frank - gesturing for him to hold on while he types more - because he feels like maybe he can trust him, more than any other adult he's met here. (Of course Mike would trust the man with bruises all over his face.) ]

There are bad men after her. If they come here, will you help me protect her?

[ Poe raises an eyebrow while looking for the device that would help translate what 9S is doing with his hand gestures. Please don't mind him he doesn't know how to do that himself. Someone should teach him! Poe is normally expressive with his hands to begin with. ]

Most of the time it's meant for celebration or used to toast to someone that everyone just lost. Different types of alcohol may not burn while going down. You're not used to it either.

[ He hadn't taken a swig out of it either. Poe uncaps the jar while bringing it up to take a sniff from it. There's a small wrinkle of his nose before he swishes the liquid around before taking a sip from it. It does burn going but he would be able to handle this. He caps the jar before typing away on the device. ]

It tastes alright at least.

[Oh man, that'd be great if they were safe in sunlight.

He's not sure where this guy is from but he seems to know at least something about weird things.]

I'm Aaron by the way.

[Aaron loses every throw. He seems happy with it though. Oh, and now they're "chatting." Aaron gets out his device, showing he's still a bit awkward with it as he responds.]

Aaron. No clue, probably one of the many many bad things that go around. Name?

Machines aren't always that bad when I come from. We use a lot of different machinery. If they looked more human I would think it would be for the service droids. The astromechs help with starfighters machines that can fly. They give navigation advice among other things. They help the pilots, which I am.

You can continue to have hope where that won't happen at all.

[He's not sure what else to do in a situation like this except get to know people and wait for the moment to actually act. This isn't it.]

Boston's nice. I grew up a bit in Jersey, don't hold it against me. I started traveling for a couple years then I ended up waking up here.

[ Well in that case - Mike will just look happy for him. Any fight won against a mouthbreather was worthy of a smile. ]

Could you teach me how to fight?

It kinda makes a place seem more permanent. So if that's what you're looking to do I don't mind.

[He really doesn't do "permanent" when it comes to places anymore but he doesn't know his plan of action involving escape yet so he should probably pretend settle in right?]

[ He follows after her so that they could go in search for what she needs. Poe types shortly back. ] I met a Carpet. Very helpful, can fly and carry things. Probably out helping others. I do appreciate your help with the desk. Maybe we'll find a good dresser or bed frame.

[ Poe is gonna try to meet the other housemates if he gets a chance too. If not right away, hopefully during random encounters. ]

[personal profile] hoaxer 2018-01-18 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
[A carpet indeed, though she can't still can't understand what allows him to move and think and overall act like a real being. It's one of the many mysteries of this place and, when the carpet holds up the snitch she instinctively reaches for it.]
gotyourselfapilot: (pic#10186934)

[personal profile] gotyourselfapilot 2018-01-18 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that sounds like a good plan. Maybe there's a shop with something like that.

[ Carpet did a good job picking things that matched. Poe may end up asking him or moving things to the side so he can bring in stuff towards his room. Only because it's in that corner area. Maybe Poe would get him to pick some decorations and ask him questions. It could help Carpet to make a decision besides for picking the first things. ]

[This manner of logic - Lu Li can't understand where it comes from. If she had Cassie's touch for conversation, perhaps she'd find a more convincing retort. But Lu Li is Lu Li. She acts upon her gut. Which is why her response is short and to the point.]

IT'S ABOUT HUMAN LIFE!

[Ah. It's a little too loud. She knows she's been looked at but--]

IT'S SELFISH TO PUT ANOTHER LIFE IN DANGER, ISN'T THAT OBVIOUS?

A Commander. Do they give good orders? I want to find out what we're truly up against and how to fight them. I would want to find out a way out of here too. I would want to try to help those that are need. Making friends is on that list too.

What about you?
imitationsoul: (She said)

[personal profile] imitationsoul 2018-01-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
[ Miach glances at Lu Li's robotic face and contemplates "what do you even know about being human?" as a retort, but it's too directly catty and it also excludes the chance that there is a person within this armor.

Instead, she breathes out slowly and simply asks: ]

Do you truly believe that selfishness is anything less than human nature?

[ As pleased as he is by her accepting his offer - the fort will only be better with a second opinion - he makes a face at being called 'shortstack'. ]

It's Mike. [ Meaning: don't call him 'shortstack' ever again. ]

You think it's a horror town? [ He doesn't disagree with her, but he's also wondering if it's a good idea to call it that. It's like jinxing the entire situation. ]

[ only when frank is caught does he even realize he was doing it, but instead of backing down he gives a big shrug and makes a face like WANNA GO?? he really doesn't know what it is about this guy. he's actually pretty sure it's just the frustration of the day, catching up to him, and he's taking it out on the first poor sap who tried to hang out with him. typical. ]

huh
if it wasn't for the wings, i'd think it was some kind of treasure
i mean
it's really shiny!

[She holds the Snitch up so they can both get a closer look at it.]

but you said it ran
[ —type type type, erasing that last word— ]
flew away from you
so maybe it's cursed treasure?

[She's stupid, don't actually believe this theory.]

[She's seen robots (or...not robots) texting before, but this one is especially quick in comparison to Bad!Janet. Yet, there's something human about this interaction. Not human in shape - Janet actually was humanoid or whatever. Eleanor finds something human in the apology. She's not certain if Janet was ever sincere in her apologies.]

[ yeah well mr. wheeler blows. frank made blanket forts with his kids whenever he was home. which admittedly wasn't that often. that's what happens when you sell your soul to the us government right? first david's kids and now... this kid. it's like he's trying to make up for something he's already revenged. his face is still black and blue to prove it.

stuck in his own head, staring at the fort, it takes him a second to realize mike's trying to get his attention. he crouches down so they're eye level and holds the device while the boy gets out his question. at first, relief floods frank's system, to know that mike has a friend here. eleven, weird name. but his mood plumets at the mention of bad men. hadn't he slaughtered enough of them in his children's names? and for leo and zach lieberman. the photograph is still in his pocket and he wants to sigh, but he doesn't. his expression is open, worry sneaking in plain for mike to read.

he hits the enter key and types his own reply below mike's. ]

It's not so much permanence as it is a feeling of being in a place that belongs to you, that has some personalization. Not blank white sterile walls like a hospital.

[Admittedly, that's low priority compared to safety and learning how to protect themselves from whatever dangers lurk in this place. But morale is important too.]

[ Mike couldn't imagine anyone disagreeing with the rules. If they did, they obviously didn't care about people's lives, and that made them just as bad as the Bad Men, to Mike. ]

You think we'll ever get to go home? [ Mike had things he had to do back home, like keep an eye on his friend Will. What was happening back home? Were his friends and family out looking for him? ] I wish we could call home to tell people we're okay. [ Happy? No. But okay. ]

[Yup. Eleanor had breezed by the kid next to her. She blinks twice at the kid next to her, before processing that somehow there's a kid who's ended up in the Bad Place. Shit. What'd this kid do?]

You know...like...versus the Good Place?

[She gestures a little helplessly.]
