INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

[Normally, Ignis is one to admonish Noctis for throwing a fit, but in this case, he's fine with letting his charge get his frustrations out. The sight of a silent venting is unusual, to say the least, but this situation they've found themselves in is unusual in every possible way. At least Noctis has the control to keep it as quiet as possible.

Never in his life did he imagine that what was supposed to be a joyous, carefree trip to the wedding of the century would turn into a string of one hardship after another, and just as things were beginning to look up...this happened.

Ignis does the only thing he can do, which is put a hand on Noctis' shoulder. A gesture to convey comfort and devotion. They might be lost in some unknown place and separated from the others, but he's here for him. He's going to support Noct and help him through this, the same way he always does. They'll find a way out and back home.

He hopes.]

Isn't that a bit of a stereotype?

[He can tell this man is offering more out of civility than anything, and Akechi supposes he can appreciate that much.]

All I truly need at the moment is a mattress and bedspread. Though, a bed frame would be nice.

My name is Akechi.

[Normally he would be more friendly and polite, trying to charm his way into other peoples' hearts, but... he isn't particularly feeling up to that, right now. He's not sure such a ruse would do anything more than irritate a man like this, anyway.]

[Rosa hears the catch in Jan's voice, bites her lip, and puts her arm up around the other girl's shoulders, giving them a hard squeeze.

she can't track all of what Jan's thinking, of course, but she has an idea. she doesn't have many connections in the living world yet herself, but selfishly and very privately she's glad Jan's here with her. she might go a little crazy if only one of them had been brought here, with the other one left alone and wondering.]

["Chatting" like this is awkward enough anyway: who types at the person they're standing next to? It's like a bizarre mix of texting and mime.]

Kilgrave.

[And because they're doing introductions, he holds out his hand to shake. S'up, Aaron. He didn't quite understand the last message, so he types again:]

[that was apparently the right response. Jan smiles back at her battered opponent, the moment of relief lightening her eyes. she's just as glad if he doesn't want to talk more about it right now. talking about insane family drama with guys who look like a lawnmower ran over them sounds like a great way to get yourself shot.

still, as odd as the whole exchange managed to be, she recognizes the smile for what it is: he's letting her off for putting her foot in it. she can appreciate that. even if he's a bad dude, he doesn't strike her as threatening or unfriendly, at least not to her at this moment. she figures she can just about manage to play cards with the guy. he almost bluffs her, this time.

she waits till the next hand to pursue the new acquaintance, throwing him another smile so he knows it's just shit talk.]

[ Woops. Friday's seen that reaction plenty of times - either on the faces of people being questioned at check out or even on her sisters; especially Thursday. It's enough to make her stay still rather than stepping closer, a mouthed Sorry! even though she's not entirely sure what she might have "said" that was wrong. She spent so much time just making sure she got the act of Karen right that she never really learned the actual expectations of human interaction on a personal level.

So she points at her device and waves her hand like she's trying to say to forget she said anything at all, before offering one last try. She figures she at least can't make it worse, and she does her best to make sure that she's not standing in the way of the exit if he needs it. ]

I'm Friday.
Sorry if I upset you.
This is all new to me.

[ The children. She hadn't even thought about them specifically. About how it might not be normal for them. Her surprise is probably written all over her face, confusion settling in as she tries to figure out why it would be any odder for them than it was for the parents.

It's the first time it's really hit her that other kids didn't have to worry about being quiet, about being in danger, about being caught.

Huh. ]

... Yeah. I guess they wouldn't, would they? [ She's not sure what to make of the feelings that run through her head. ] It must be their only choice. It must be terrifying to have so many new people around who might not understand it.
kiljoy: (aka you got nothing on me)

[What even is that face. What's with this guy? He's scarred and rough-looking; you wouldn't want to meet him down a dark alley. Or in broad daylight. He's also being silently aggressive just with his face which is sort of impressive if Kilgrave thinks about it, but he's not going to bother doing that.

So. Jerkface needs to take a hike. Kilgrave shakes his head and mouths piss off, jabbing his finger at the door to the hall. Who knows, maybe it'll work. He can't know for sure unless he tries.]

Man in the hat

[personal profile] gotyourselfapilot 2018-01-18 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The man didn't want to do a lot of celebrating. He wasn't much in the mood, after receiving the small gift from home lifted some spirits. Even if it was his mother's wedding ring on the necklace. It meant a lot to him and it being in a place like this was a bit odd. But maybe it had found it's way here. As much as he would have wanted a weapon this only brought feelings from home. The quiet meant getting lost in a lot of thought as well as observing the scenes around him. He couldn't help it. A bit of hope could go along way. There were so many that seemed lost, left in darkness, but a small thing even if it may seem a bit silly or sad helped.

Poe kept his gift a bit hidden within the reddish orange jumpsuit around his neck. The food had been a nice touch too even if it seemed simple and light on their diets. People did have alcohol around in jars but he wasn't completely sure where they were coming from. But it added in that celebration touch and alcohol would help dim some frustrations. He's not much paying attention when he accidentally bumps into Houou. There's a small apologetic smile shortly after as he types on the device right after that. ]

I'm sorry about that. I should have been paying better attention to where I was walking.

[personal profile] accessdata 2018-01-18 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Friday's not sure if this is where she's supposed to reach out and offer some kind of comfort. A touch, maybe? She was better at it with her sisters, but even then, she had never been quite sure about the social boundaries of it. Sometimes she did or said things that made even them look at her funny. She had a strange sense of what the phrase 'looking on the bright side' meant, Thursday had told her once.

She offers what she hopes is her best reassuring smile, hoping that that's enough. Sometimes in the movies, when they got to watch one, people would grab each others hands, but she's not sure if that's just something that actors did to show more intensity in a scene or if it was actually how people were supposed to react to these things. ]

You get used to it quickly. The quiet, I mean. It's not as awful as it comes across. [ She plays with a loose thread in the cuff of her jumper as she talks, feeling a little better when she has her hands occupied. ] Especially when they've got so much stuff to occupy time with. You might even find it boring if you're used to all that kind of crazy stuff you mentioned happening.

[Lu Li, who's learned to watch people's faces for her own survival, catches that surprise easily. It seems odd that Friday has to think about it but she remembers what her world had been like. One child per family, else grave punishment was enacted upon them. She must adjust to the fact that everyone's "Earth" will be different.]

I'M SURPRISED THEY LET US STAY.

[Jan may have not intended to, but Lu Li's mood has lifted. This girl, despite her staring, was remarkably well-mannered. She wasn't being outright hostile, only flustered. To think that someone would think that way towards a "robot" like her...

Lu Li finally stops laughing so she can take out her device. She already committed one indiscretion with the natives. She doesn't want to agitate them further.]

[Jan's still in the kitchen, the bread and hooch she brought back from the party for her housemates placed securely on the counter with a "free to take" note on top. Jan herself is sitting at the kitchen table, arms folded in front of her, cheek pillowed on her elbow as she tracks the shadows on the wall with her eyes and thinks.

the silence will be terribly hard for her to sleep in, she can tell already. Jan sleeps like a log, but she's gotten used to a certain amount of ambient noise in her space. old buildings creak, no matter how much new drywall you put up during the apartment renovations. recharging laptops hum and splutter. refrigerators buzz. even the whisper of her own personal ghost in the walls had become reassuring instead of freaky, after the first few weeks -- once Rosa cut it out with the poltergeist murder attempts. you get used to things.

she feels Lalli enter the kitchen and tenses until she can identify him from the corner of her eye. human. probably not going to suddenly attack her. that's all right-- maybe. she stays quiet.]

[How much can he say? It's not like it's common knowledge that real monsters hide out there, both normal looking and not. Some normal people never see but they still do things.]

You know, bad things. Things that take people from their homes and are never seen again. Things that remember when people feared the dark and huddled around little fires for safety from it. Or just people who feed them. Like that dude that killed people and wore their skins.

[That last one was definitely a movie.]

Also, are you a mobster or really into metal music?

Maybe they can use all the help they can get. [ Reims isn't exactly a small city. To make more of it livable, they'd need more hands. At least, that's what she would assume. ]

He gives a huff of his own before he responds. ]

yeah well it aint my fault you were walking so slow either
some people have got places to be yknow and if youre gonna go around taking up all the space then youre gonna get bumped into!!!

[ He's annoyed, yeah, but as he holds his hand out to show her the message his ire kind of... dies. He's a very reactionary guy, so arguing silently doesn't really have the same kind of loud and explosive fuel it normally does, leaving him with his own thoughts for a few awkward moments in which he considers the possibility that.. maybe he's overreacting again.

He retracts the device and taps out another message, looking away like he doesn't care as she reads it. ]

im sorry for making you fall
are you ok?
