INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

[ fortunately for lalli, she is already quickly typing on her own by the time he gets close enough. ]

Hello. Are you busy? I was wondering if you could help me with something?

[ it's. a pretty big favor she's about to ask, so she intends to ease him into it... ]

Right. You don't quite strike me as a 'magician' type though. Not with moves like that.

[ See? He's totally onto you, Akira. Though that last message was enough to get quite the amused look to cross his features. Oh yeah. People had said jokes and comments in reference to his name before so it wasn't lost on him by any means.

Akira was entirely more entertaining than those people were, though. ]

That IS how it works. Unavoidable as it may be.

[ the handkerchief was well timed, for by the time her hands are free she's reaching for something, anything to suddenly shove in her mouth because oh lord she swallowed before her tastebuds could catch up to her and now it just burnnnns all down her throat and—

she muffles a miserable shriek against the cloth, coughing roughly enough that several natives whip their head around and throw her sharp looks of reproach. ]

[Yuuri took for granted that the people around him now aren't familiar with Victor's unique personality. He looks up at the tall man, eyes a little wide and shakes his head before finding him in the device.]

No. I've got him. I'm used to this, thanks.

[ she had been more than ready to just leave it at that, too, quite content to just carry on her way in what isn't even the chilliest encounter she's ever had, but certainly ranking high enough up there that her feathers are ruffled, unsettling her already frazzled nerves since arriving here.

but she winds up rooted to her spot under his hard stare, his eyes a brighter, clearer blue than her own. she is mildly startled by it, finding them cold where they'd once been full of fire,

and then he's gone before she can even have the chance to finish properly reading.

she's left staring after his back with an open, gaping mouth. like a fish out of water, her mouth moves, but no sound comes out. glancing about, she doesn't meet the eyes of any other, making her feel alarmingly alone, and she wonders if she would have felt the same way if she'd been the one to walk away first. ]

Not really...

But she isn't actually sure she knows what to ask, or how to ask it. It will just have to be something to ponder on later, she supposes. They're running out of time.

I suppose it doesn't matter at the moment. You are able to do manual labor just fine, then?

[They've had their ominous warnings about the Sound Eaters and now they're getting sob stories from the locals too. Kilgrave wanders around, observing, figuring out what he has to work with here. As far as he can tell so far, his powers aren't gone but they've only worked on a few of the new arrivals. He's surrounded by people he can't control.

So that's difficult. He finds a quiet corner to check his phone, leaning against the wall with a soft sigh. There's another man nearby talking to someone else, but Kilgrave leaves them alone for now.]

[ The thing about not having sound to let him know where people was, made figuring out when people were nearby a little difficult. So when he realizes that someone was nearby and watching him? It was enough to distract him and his hand slipped briefly in it's hold on a window sill.

After all. He wasn't perfect in doing this sort of thing.

His grip on the other hold he had remained firm, so he didn't entirely slip from his spot much. Though it was a bit harder to just keep going while knowing someone was watching him, so with a quiet sigh, Karma moved to get just a bit further which allowed him to move and turn so he could look at the city from a somewhat better vantage point. Only to move back down with more ease than he had in going up.

Once he was down, he waved a hand at Sebastian and typed out a message as he got close enough for him to see it. ]

You didn't need to worry about me. I had that under control, you know.

[ It's incredibly calm in it's 'tone' but he is smiling rather calmly; albeit in a way that could seem reassuring? ]

[Kilgrave raises an eyebrow. A high-risk lifestyle. Maybe he is the type to jump in head-first into the unknown.]

Who knows, maybe you'll have the chance to do both. Best of luck.

[He stands, patting Aaron on the shoulder (but softly, to avoid making a noise), and nods a goodbye. Kilgrave will file away the information he has on Aaron for now. There are a lot of people to meet.]

[ Upon closer inspection it was hard to miss how exhausted and worn out the older man was, forcing something of a smile. He found himself at least thankful the man wasn't irritable; infact he was quite the opposite. ]

Hmm... That's debatable. Do you think I should bring anything extra with us?

[ He almost looks thoughtful, unfolding his arms as his gaze trailed to the wooden screwdriver in Bodhi's hand. ]

I feel ready to go out and do this otherwise. Shouldn't be too hard to do this little task they've given us.

Now I understand why you hate machines. They sound scary and if they are as big as you say they are. No wonder humans aren't on that world they would be afraid all the time. But, if they helped you fight, wouldn't it end sooner?

[ It almost seem selfish to only have the androids fight and not fight along with them. Why weren't they fighting to take their home back? ]

There's more reasons than that.

[A2 doesn't elaborate on it though, instead processing the next question with a visible scowl, guilt clear underneath.]

No. It wouldn't. Humans are extinct, and us androids are next. It's just a matter of time.

[..... Huh. Now that's not something you hear every day. It's hard to imagine how the Admedistration would respond to the threat of an incoming comet impact, and the thought of the ensuing chaos does, on some level, intrigue her. Nature was still one facet of life that could still be unpredictable and would not bow to Lifeism's moral precepts of mindfulness.

The correct thing to do here is to express some kind of sympathy or feel shame for having shown curiosity over such a morbid matter in the first place. Tuan though.... she at least has the sense not to say "woah, you went out just like the dinosaurs did huh."

[She nodded. Sounded like a plan. Looking to the frame and the dresser she considered them both. Howe were they going to carry both? Faith turned her head, brow furrowing as she considered the piece. If she held it in such a way that the drawers wouldn't fall out, she could probably get it herself and Poe could handle the bed frame?

Faith moved behind it, grabbing the edges carefully and lifted it up. There we go! And up it went over top her head on its back end so the drawers were facing up. She glanced back at Poe, grin triumphant, then nodded her head toward the door. She'd need help setting it down silently, but she'd be able to get it back to the house like this at the very least. Now the challenge was going to be dodging people in this place to get out.]

[ Poe could feel his mouth part in shock by that. Humans are extinct on her world. It could happen anywhere. He would hope that it wouldn't happen back where he comes from. There's plenty of different species though. He shuts his mouth looking determined still as he types on his device. ]

You're basically killing machines to survive. No wonder you were so worried about my tiny bb unit.

[ It's not fair, but sometimes life is like that. Poe presses his lips together. ]

If anything happens here, let's fight together to stop it.
So you don't have to fight anything by yourselves anymore.

[The locals understandably tense. That degree of noise, even muffled into the cloth, rang loudly throughout the little party. He doesn't look at them, though, he focuses on the girl, keeping his hand in place to hold the cloth. There's a bit of added pressure, to muffle the sound, but not hard enough to actually block her mouth.]

Settle. [A single word, said in a very low voice, since the silence was shattered anyways.]

[ Miach supposes she can't blame Tuan for that. It's not a situation that's within the expected for sheltered, kind Japan. No, more than that, it's not the kind of situation one would expect from their own father. Tuan may be an outlier, someone who sees more than others, but she's still been raised with some sort of extremely basic understanding of faith in her family, Miach wagers.

And she herself had lived through a period of disbelief upon waking up and finding herself strapped to a hospital bed on the other end of the world.

Her smile drops in favor of a more neutral expression as she types away at an explanation. ]

I was stolen.

[ For the third time she adds in her mind, bitterly. But there are things that she won't simply share with Tuan or anyone. Things that are so private and so so publicly pitiable that even the idea of seeing someone react to them is revolting to Miach. The faces they had made in therapy, the sticky-sweet words of comfort that were the candy they tried to placate her childish self with... Miach doesn't want them. Back then she hadn't thought much of it, happy to have a solid roof above her head, but looking back Miach shivers every time she recalls the medical regimen she had to go through. ]

They took you right before the inevitable, right? It was the same for me. Only they didn't deem Japanese morality centers appropriate for me anymore. No, they took me to their medical mecca, right to the heart of their God - as if he can 'cure' me any better in direct proximity.

I've been kept at Dian Cécht in Baghdad for three years now.

Followed with the aforementioned man turning to go ahead and do the thing he'd essentially told him to go and do.

He'd normally let it be but something told him to not to.

So that was why with a wordless sigh, Karma typed up a message and moved around so he could get Aizawa's attention. Once he did - hopefully - that, he flashed him the device with a reluctant look on his face. ]
