Understanding dawns as Carpet watches 9S' slowly retreating back; he droops to nearly half his previous height. 9S is a person, and he's not. He doesn't even look like a person. He could probably still help..... but 9S clearly doesn't want help or company.
Carpet turns around and takes back off in silence, rising higher and higher until he's up near the roof of the building. He'll go the other way and check a different part, then, so it'll be kind of like they shared the work--but if 9S doesn't want him to be there, then he won't bother him.]
