INTRO LOG #2

INTRO LOG #2

Put a Sock in It
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home – with or without the help of those who have come before you.

The Place Inside
Content Warnings: Disorientation, hallucinations, body horror
Themes: Plot, exploration

Have you been to hell. And more importantly, have you been back. We all know this pain but are too scared to recall. This horror controls us, pulls at our strings to ensure how our life plays out. So, let me rephrase my question: have you been to Ile Lacrox. And more importantly, can you come back.

In the community, if you hear something you're not supposed to hear, you learn to look the other way. If you see something you're not supposed to see, you pretend it never happened. If you feel disappointed, you learn to never ask for more. So, through good times and bad, famine and feast, the natives held fast to their rules until one common day a sly wind blew in from the south...

That same red dust twists through the streets, curling up in faint, little plumes of familiarity. The farther south you go, the thicker it becomes. Those willing to explore far enough will find it coming from an island in the middle of the river. Once there, doting every available surface is the evidence of Sound Eater births, and the closer you are to the island, the harder it is to avoid being coated in red. Even if it's not rubbed into the skin, it doesn't take long for the effects to take over. Every sound is amplified. Your breaths are deafening, the slightest step echoes. But no Sound Eater attacks. Your vision blurs, and it's as if your mouth is sealing itself shut. Those you traveled with seem to be similarly affected, and you know you have to be quiet. Anyone who brought supplies with them might discover that a drink of water subdues the symptoms.

OOC: Only characters who entirely submerge themselves in water will be free of the dust effects. Just remember that noise will attract Sound Eaters.

Liplocked
Content Warnings: Violent tendencies, mind alteration
Themes: Love, romance, obsession, sex

The natives are of French origin, and with that comes a love of romance. Residents will find treats and valentines at their doors. That same night, there will be a small, red-glowing fire built near the fountain. There will be jars pressed into the dirt and filled with a sweet, red liquid. Some natives can be seen drinking it and being very affectionate with one another. Anyone who drinks this is inspired to show endearment or lust to others, and it will wear off after sleeping.

There's also the noticeable addition of a new arrival. They came through the Reset Room just like everybody else. They understand the rules and follow them to a tee. They are the perfect example of what the natives want in their residents. They are charming and captivating. They say nothing, and they don't have to. When your eyes meet, you feel seduced. There's a nervous flutter in your stomach. You can feel your heartbeat in your throat. Pounding, constricting. They smile and then turn away.

As they're walking, you notice you're not the only one looking at them, and in their expression, you see your own mirrored. What started as sweet infatuation and longing dissolves into a jealousy unlike any you've ever known. All you understand now is that to win their affections you have to come out on top—so you're the only one they see. Your actions are not your own, but they're still yours.

OOC: There are two ways to break the "spell". Your character fights it out with someone else who is feeling the same way OR they're approached and physically touched by someone who isn't affected by the newcomer. A third of the community will be completely unaffected (everyone else is affected unless the player is uncomfortable with playing out the scenarios). The newcomer can be of any gender the player wishes. For those partaking in drinking, the players can choose what effects it has; it can inspire feelings of lust or boost paternal/maternal instincts or devotion towards friends.

An informant. He has already died and returned twice and has been very cooperative with sharing information on the subject.

[Hux doesn't particularly care whether or not that translates into a willingness to risk life for an experiment. Better the dog than either of them.

He measures out the distance to their next goal with a curious spread of his forefinger and thumb, trying to compare the distance visually. He isn't sure he fully trusts the measurement system used by this planet's people. It isn't standard.]

I do not doubt he'll make a good first trial for testing it out. In either case the information gained will be worth it.

[ lore’s eyes begin to narrow now, looking up from the message she just recieved so she can get a proper gander at faith's appearance.

she’s been around her mom long enough to pick up the signs of someone being drunk or 'secret' drunk. those weird jars are nothing but trouble at this point, she's sure of it.

while she wants to think more on what's behind this, she decides that focusing on faith and her well-being is more important. ]

I'll keep that in mind. I don't want to leave you alone like this so I'll take the chance.

[He's not gonna make it. Him, he means, not the kid.

No, the kid's got the right idea.

There's a strangled cry of raw frustration pounding at Hawkeye's every nerve and he isn't entirely sure he's got the know-how for how to stave it off. Permanently. You think!? You think this place is shit? Hawk's shoulders tense and it almost hurts to have his body seize up like that-- but he knows it; it's the kind of tension that would hit like a train when a shell would hit an arm's length away. It's the perfectly natural phenomenon known as a flight reflex... and having nowhere to really fly off to. The kid gestures around and Hawkeye is, moronically, powerless to stop himself from giving their surroundings a second and third look-see.

And he doesn't really have the idea to do it but his response is to channel his might into broadcasting one thing:

Oh.

Like he'd never noticed just how large the backyard of the new house was until the sweetheart pointed it out. Something entirely harmless and domestic like that.

The-- everything about him relaxes, he feels the bridge of his nose begin to burn and he wonders when he'd stopped breathing. Who had this kid restrained like that? Was it rabid? But Hawk's trying very hard not to think, not to feel, (it's so hard, it's not fair) and it's

muscle memory, or something, that makes him reach out to nudge the boy's upper arms. And it's not that he's unfeeling, it's just that his face is a decent mask of portraying so. He's had practice. So sue him.

And listen.

Because breathing can only ever benefit them both. God damn anxiety ridden messes-- can he be reassigned to a different ward? Anyway. Kid. Look. Listen. He'll demonstrate.

Breath in through your nose. Fill your lungs, put effort into making your chest expand. Fill them from the bottom up. Hold the air in there-- three seconds. Not long. Breathe out through tight lips. No gasping. No pulling. Hey. Are you listening? Then do as he says, damn it, or they'll both be here past the last bell.]

Akechi likes this, this warm, friendly sort of camaraderie. He considers Yuu's words for a moment before he responds.]

I do, but as for how to get them, well. Since they're passing them out so easily, I would imagine they'll just hand them over if asked.

I suppose my asking could serve as a distraction, however, if they're more stingy about parting with them.

yes and no. it's all related to them. whatever they are, wherever they come from.

Frank stops there, he isn't really sure how to go on when he doesn't have much more info than Hopper. He waves the other man down the sandpath back into the village and begins leading towards his house where he has rainwater stored. He watches the other man carefully, knowing his symptoms will be returning soon.

the red dust is somehow related to their life and death cycles. i think it's what brought us here

Reading is easier than responding.

[Teddy's tail wags twice softly at the human's response before he remembers to still it again. He is used to people being unaccustomed to his knowledge of language, so it has no longer become a surprise when someone reacts with disbelief or confusion. But at least Eddie does not assume it is a prank as others have.

He puts a paw gently on Eddie, the color of his device shifting more to the blue end as he carefully orders the letters and words in his next response.]

Spelling takes time. [He was one of the fastest learners in his unit, but actually thinking in another language, and one constructed so differently from his natural impulses, was time consuming and exhausting.]

Questions i can answer in brief help.

[ Mike just looks very confused to hear they're from totally different time periods when Eddie made it sound like they were from the same place. ]

I'm from 1984. [ It's definitely sounding like they were separated at birth now. Mike knows Will is from the future, but he hasn't actually met anyone from the past here before. ] This is so freaky.

[ After a bit more walking, they've made it to house nine and Mike gestures for Eddie to follow him to the bathroom. He runs the tap in the bath as quietly as he can and grabs Eddie a towel. ]

Do you want some privacy? [ Mike doesn't know how Eddie wants to do this - if he's going to completely strip off or just down to his undies or if he wants Mike's help and doesn't mind him staying. ] I can wait outside?

So I keep being told. It was a fundamental piece of my training.

[A very necessary one, according to his handlers. He needed to be capable of reporting back his findings and recording data if he became stranded so they could recover it if he died.

The collar around his neck is neurally linked to his brain, it provides him with an ability to communicate, and gather other people's attempts at doing the same, but losing it would do more than inconvenience the over-sized canine. It's removal would kill him.

And yet if anyone claimed it necessary to their survival, Teddy would allow it.]

[Teddy assumes the boy's shivering is from cold, and presses his body into Will's side, closing his eyes to enjoy the gentle scratching. Before this strange town he had never known affection like the people here seemed so willing to share with him, and he revels in it when it is offered to him.

His paw rests on Will's knee in a gentle reassurance. He tucks his head under the boy's chin and gives him a single appreciative lick, trying to offer the boy what warmth and comfort he could]

I'm afraid I know woefully little, as far as technical details go, so I apologize for that. What I can tell you is that they're very limited in function. Well, to be honest, they barely qualify as androids. Some look the part, but they certainly come no where near sentience. As you do, I presume.

Oh lord. If only Charlie knew that the last thing Eddie would want to do was to get rid of a centaur!! He was still internally freaking out about the fact that he was talking to a centaur. He had at least one million questions, but was doing his best to treat this situation at least semi-normally.

"Oh." It wasn't something he had honestly thought about. It was hard to adapt to a world without sound, and it has him staring contemplatively at the centaur's hooves. "Is that uncomfortable?"

A genuine question again, because he has zero idea how horse feet- hooves? worked. He knew he hated walking around without shoes, so maybe it was the same thing.

Eddie lifts his head and smiles a little. "I've never met a centaur before. Do you guys make houses like people then? I've barely even met a horse. I dunno what you find comfortable. Or need?" He wasn't so sure if they could make the door higher. Or even how to go about that. If only Ben were around.

(Oh...

Eddie slows a bit in his steps to stare back at Jake. Thing was, Jake wasn't actually making it more of a thing than it needed to be. The thing about twelve and eleven year olds was that they took these sort of things very seriously. And Eddie wasn't one to break his promises. The proof of that lay in his scarred palms.

Again, he's quiet entirely both externally and internally. It was almost odd to him that Jake didn't mind the affection. If only cause, the reality of it was, they didn't quite know each other. Eddie felt a little bit like they did, of course, as some kids were wont to feel towards special people, but Jake owed him nothing. Certainly not that open-ended kindness of a boy who didn't mind another boy being a little more...affectionate than was strictly normal between boys.

It breaks down a wall inside of Eddie, something he isn't fully aware of, but it's made to crumble all the same in the instance of a single smile sent his way. And a tangible feeling arises around Jake: safe.

Safe in the sense that Eddie could maybe be a little more open with Jake. His staring is unblinking, unwavering, as all of this rushes up over him. Then finally, Eddie does respond.)

(Don't make me promise that. I keep my promises and I don't know if I can keep that one.)

(Promises were a sort of magic for Eddie and his friends. Richie hadn't even made him promise. Eddie wasn't so sure- but he thinks maybe the universe wanted him dead in some distant, cruel way. He knew, rationally, all things died, but somehow it felt a little more personal in his case. He looks away from Jake then.)

(I'll try though. It's not like I WANT to die, and I'm way too big of a coward to play the hero, so you don't need to worry about me being reckless.)

(And finally, after a couple of seconds, Eddie smiles a little.)

(Yeah, I felt really bold. It was weird. I never feel bold.)

(That sentence alone is very telling, though Eddie doesn't expand beyond that.)

Really?

(Eddie looks as if Jake may as well have sprouted a second head. The idea of a child willingly being friends with an adult was astonishing to him. And yet, the shock fades quickly enough. After all, he'd had a few friends back on the station that were adults, hadn't he? Maybe Roland was one of those kinds of adults.

He had to be if Jake wanted to find him.

Truthfully, Eddie could adapt. If they stumbled into Mid-World, he'd lament the loss of certain luxuries, but he's been through worse. With how frightened he was of his old world and its own monsters, and the fact that he has been without his mother for a couple months, it would take a lot to force him back to his own world. A part of him felt like he was doing a lot better without his mother's influence- even if some nights he did still ache for her (always shamefully- always).

Eddie was never going to do great at suppressing the urge to laugh. It wasn't quite in his nature, and for being such a coward, he was stupidly brave about some things.)

I'll try not to walk in when you're busy. (.........Yes, that was a masturbation joke, if anything is to go by Eddie's smile turning into a smirk, and his eyes brightening a little with mischief.

God, if anyone ever wondered why Richie Tozier was his best friend- this was exactly the reason right here. It didn't even matter that they were just kids. They've made way worse jokes than that before. Young boys were gross by nature, and Eddie was absolutely no different, and anyone shocked by that had a world of waking up in store for them.

But anyway. As for the rest of the house, he nods for Jake to follow him. It's actually a really nice house, all things considered. He shows him the back porch.)

I'm gonna plant some stuff from the greenhouse, I think. So we can have easy-access stuff. (And then the kitchen right after.) Do you know how to cook? Bill can cook pretty all right.

(Eddie hasn't given a straight fuck. He's pretty incapable of giving a straight fuck, granted, but that's another joke that's probably too stupid to leave in here. But hey. Fuck it.

His eyes go wide and he quickly nods. He points at Will and then over to the houses and then points to himself. After a moment, he taps out carefully: r o o m m a t e.

He knew Max. Max was the first person he had really established a connection with. She was- she was nice.)
