[Maybe it's because his hackles are up, or his powers are humming on a low simmer, or just regular intuition, but he doesn't find the reach for casualness all that convincing when all is said and done. Maybe it's really just that there's nothing casual in the way the people here have to live--it's careful, and meticulous, and afraid. All of the time, afraid.

He remembers seeing monsters invisible to everyone else. He pictures landing here alone the way he'd landed in the Mohaine desert and sees the boy's point with the clarity of that burning sun.]
