It's early in the day when it happens. The red dust that seems to be everywhere sweeps through the city streets, mixing with the steady patter of rain and making it hard to see and breathe. All red and leaving the taste of copper if inhaled, what could have been an easy day without any trouble quickly becomes anything but. While those in the community are heading for cover or finding ways to continue on through it, the new arrivals begin waking up in different cities all over the world. There won't be anyone to greet them, and leaving the room through the door is their choice - after doing so, they'll immediately step out into the city they were assigned. The streets are empty, houses abandoned, everything crumbling and in ruins. There will be signs noting their location, which they'll catch a glimpse of before a sharp push forward causes darkness to engulf them.

Waking up for the second time, in Reims but not in the Reset Room, they'll come to inside the red dust as it whips through the streets of the community. They won't be alone for long. Another person will be waking up beside them, and after a few moments of disorientation, try to attack. They might have weapons or use their hands, and they will not stop until they've taken a fatal blow. Their blood is dust, and they, along with their weapons, disintegrate after they've died. Can you stop them on your own? Will someone come to your aid?

The Sight of Lightning

The day after the storm, the same red dust will find its way through Reims and come into contact with every person. Since the dust is everywhere, some might not notice that it's floating through the community and know that something is off. The effects don't begin until night fall, where everyone will feel the desire to seek out companionship of many different kinds. Though it is not always the case, the people that saw each other in color will "want" to be with that person more strongly than they might already, and will be more likely to confess or do something about it. Some might feel an intense need to be around another person, though not necessarily sexually - almost as if they need that person around them to be happy or content. For some, it might be a desire that can only be fulfilled by more than one person.

The effects wear off the next time the person gets wet. This can be a splash of water across the face or fully submerged. Or even drinking something.

[ his joke makes her smile, it's a conspiratorial kind of look, like she's in on the joke. 'mostly human'. ]

[ heeeey any part of you that's not human, she's all the more cool with, honestly. it's going to be her assumption that it was the metal that pulled her here first, and the fact that it happens to be attached to someone she doesn't mind talking to is just a bonus.

[ bucky's run into the one mutant willing to just spill her guts about the mutant experience, although she does give him a look like puberty isn't the worst already, now add superpowers can you imagine grimace. being a mutant is the best but also society has made it the worst. ]

[ He's not even sure where all of their various abilities come from, but he hopes the people gaining them will chose to use them for good. Being under HYDRA's control showed him some of the worst things humanity has to offer, but it hasn't completely stamped out the optimism that people like Steve inspire in him. There are good people out there. He has to believe that. ]

[ she nods, acknowledging the appearance of powered people in his world. ]

[ there are hundreds of theories, from human experimentation in ww2 gone wrong to some kind of divine plague. lorna is more concerned with how to protect them now that they're here, more than where they came from, so she's not too knowledgeable on that front. the mention of heroes makes her smile, though there's the touch of something grim to it. ]

all the heroes are gone though

[ villains too, if you count the brotherhood. they're on their own. that seems like too depressing a thought to share, so she turns her attention back to the guy with the metal arm. bucky. ]

& what we can do

[ Bucky's not sure what to make of the whole concept of these different words. It's a lot to wrap his head around. He definitely knows what it's like to be dangerous and wanted, even if some of the factors are out of his control. The last thing he wants is for anyone to use him to hurt others again. ]

all the heroes can't be gone as long as someone is willing to do what's right
sometimes you have to be that person, even when it's hard

[ it surprises her to read something that's so... spot on. lorna doesn't think of herself as a hero, but she's willing to do what's necessary to protect the future. ]

so you're a sniper and an optimist, huh?

[ she tucks up her legs under her on the bench, as if settling in. she's teasing him, but the look on her face suggests she appreciates it. his optimism. that hope. ]

[ He can't help shaking his head a little. Optimist isn't something he'd necessarily use to describe himself anymore. He's seen a lot of bad in people and he's become more suspicious and even a little cynical about some things. Still, he can't deny that knowing people like Steve are out there gives him hope. He hopes he can live up to that eventually. ]

I guess I am. is that so surprising?

[ He remembers the War and what it felt like to fight HYDRA at Steve's side. Hell, he remembers how he felt on that last mission, like they were so close to what they'd been fighting for. Back then, those concepts hadn't been at odds at all in his mind. ]

[ it doesn't escape her attention, him shaking his head. but she can understand that too, maybe. her best friend was an optimist, but rarely did sonya appreciate being called out on it. ]

[ bucky, himself, is nice. she didn't know what she was looking for when she left the house, but there's a peacefulness in sitting leaned up against him like this. lorna...is not in the business of hoping, but that doesn't mean she can't appreciate it in other people. most of all when it comes from an unexpected source. ]

nothing wrong with knowing when to stand and fight.

[ If anything, Bucky probably stays and fights well past when most people would say he should walk away. He knows exactly where he learned that, too, and he's not even half as bad as Steve is. ]

how bad is it back where you come from? are you safe?

[ there's a part of her that just sort of shuts down internally when he asks that specific question. is she safe? no. not really. but she doesn't want him to think it makes her a victim either. ]

[ not being safe so others might eventually get to live out in the open. it's put her at odds with a lot of her friends, so it's kind of weird how honest she's being to a relative stranger.

[ Something tenses in his face at the mention of experimenting on people. He hadn't meant to pry so much. He shouldn't have, because he's obviously hit a real nerve and it's related to one of his.

For a moment he doesn't answer, conflicted about what to even say or how to put it. ]

[ There's no pity on his face, just understanding. He doesn't get it all, but he gets enough. It seems her world has leveled a great injustice against people with abilities. It's something he can see happening in his own, too, but he doesn't want anyone else going through half of what he's gone through. ]

[ she shakes her head reading his sorry, because she doesn't want pity. it's only when she doesn't see it reflected in his face that she can relax and realize he's not feeling sorry for her. (not everything's about you, lorna!)

countless questions flit through her head at reading the rest of what he said. what was wrong with his arm? what did they do to him? more than the arm? mostly lorna can't help but think about war, and what esme said. 'nothing brings people together like hate.' it had bummed lorna out then, and it does now, to think that such similar things might go on in places she's never heard of. is human nature really that predictable? ]

[ Bucky can't imagine a world where the US didn't join the Allies. He can't imagine a world where they could let the Nazis just go around killing people and terrorizing others. That's not a world he can believe in and he doesn't regret enlisting, even for all the pain he'd experienced after. ]

can't let people get taken advantage of or bullied just because they're different
good guys don't abduct people and experiment on them, even if they are criminals
