MOD LOG #3

MOD LOG #3

Arriving in style
Content Warnings: Fighting, death, violence
Themes: Survival, plot

It's early in the day when it happens. The red dust that seems to be everywhere sweeps through the city streets, mixing with the steady patter of rain and making it hard to see and breathe. All red and leaving the taste of copper if inhaled, what could have been an easy day without any trouble quickly becomes anything but. While those in the community are heading for cover or finding ways to continue on through it, the new arrivals begin waking up in different cities all over the world. There won't be anyone to greet them, and leaving the room through the door is their choice - after doing so, they'll immediately step out into the city they were assigned. The streets are empty, houses abandoned, everything crumbling and in ruins. There will be signs noting their location, which they'll catch a glimpse of before a sharp push forward causes darkness to engulf them.

Waking up for the second time, in Reims but not in the Reset Room, they'll come to inside the red dust as it whips through the streets of the community. They won't be alone for long. Another person will be waking up beside them, and after a few moments of disorientation, try to attack. They might have weapons or use their hands, and they will not stop until they've taken a fatal blow. Their blood is dust, and they, along with their weapons, disintegrate after they've died. Can you stop them on your own? Will someone come to your aid?

The Sight of Lightning
Content Warnings: Poison, sex
Themes: Survival, plot

The day after the storm, the same red dust will find its way through Reims and come into contact with every person. Since the dust is everywhere, some might not notice that it's floating through the community and know that something is off. The effects don't begin until night fall, where everyone will feel the desire to seek out companionship of many different kinds. Though it is not always the case, the people that saw each other in color will "want" to be with that person more strongly than they might already, and will be more likely to confess or do something about it. Some might feel an intense need to be around another person, though not necessarily sexually - almost as if they need that person around them to be happy or content. For some, it might be a desire that can only be fulfilled by more than one person.

The effects wear off the next time the person gets wet. This can be a splash of water across the face or fully submerged. Or even drinking something.

[ Bucky stops a few feet away and wipes red dust and rainwater from his face with his right hand.

He doesn't understand the question, gets it a little wrong because the storm isn't all he's known here.
]

A few weeks.

[ But he'd been with Steve before that, the memory still sharp in his mind after all the time he'd spent isolating himself and running paranoid. He wouldn't wish for anyone to get stuck here, but at the same time there's a selfish part of him that's happy to see Steve again.

Part of him is also nervous, though. They've barely seen each other since before HYDRA took him. After DC, Bucky hadn't stopped running until he'd been caught. Then they'd had an emergency to contend with. Now, here they are and Bucky's remembering all the reasons he'd run in the first place. Steve doesn't need the muddied mess that Bucky's become clogging up his life. He doesn't seem to have changed even a little, but Bucky can barely recognize himself some days. There's a nagging feeling that he's going to let Steve down somehow now that Steve might have time to really see him.

[ If Bucky had been around for any of that time, he'd know Steve wasn't unchanged. Losing the best friend he'd ever known had been just the thing to do it, too — not the only thing, but Steve knows himself well enough to admit to it. He hadn't really worn the shield in earnest until he'd thought he might lose Bucky. He hadn't taken the fight to Schmidt until he'd thought he had. And that was just before the ice. Bucky still has a way of shifting his focus.

Sometimes that means sharpening it, honing in on his priorities. And sometimes it means throwing him well off balance, maybe seeing a little of what he wants to see. Belatedly, even as Bucky moves his right arm, Steve finds himself staring at his left — the fully intact metal hung casually at his side.
]

A few weeks? [ he says sharply, forcing his eyes back to Bucky's face. ] I just saw you go—

[ Unless he didn't, unless he was out a lot longer than he'd assumed, a thought that fills him with a cold, whistling dread. Steve swallows; he can't linger there. ] That was enough time to rebuild your arm? [ He nods slightly in that direction. ]

They haven't rebuilt anything. You and I were in Wakanda and then I was here.

[ Nothing about Bucky has been fixed. It's been a near-constant on his mind in he silence when he can't keep himself occupied. He's a ticking time bomb waiting for the wrong person to know the right words. ]

Before today, the only person here who knew me was Stark. I think he's been here even longer.

[ There's only a little venom in his voice at the name, probably leftover resentment from their last exchange. For the most part, they've managed a ceasefire of sorts, even though it's clear neither of them can actually stand to look at each other for very long without thinking about Howard and his wife. ]

[ That still doesn't tell him much, and he's about to say so, the lines deep on his forehead, between his brow. But then Bucky continues and it all smooths out at once in a reserved sort of stricken way. ] Tony's here.

[ He looks Bucky over again, like he wouldn't have immediately noticed any injuries from a fight. There's nothing, of course, but from what he's been able to tell (admittedly not a lot) Bucky heals quickly, like him. And he hasn't seen Tony yet. He presses his lips together briefly before speaking. ]

He given you a hard time?

Nothing I can't handle.

[ given half a moment of thought, he thinks better off that flippant comment. Stark hasn't exactly been the easiest to deal with, but he really hasn't given Bucky any real trouble, just grief. ]

I've managed not to punch him. He's managed not to punch me. I don't think we have to worry.

[ that's not to say Bucky hasn't wanted to punch him. There's even a part of him that wanted to get punched for a minute there, caught between his guilt and misguided notion that letting Stark hit him might give him the upper hand for a little while. He recognizes that it's not the healthiest approach, but he can't entirely promise himself he won't try again. ]

[ Steve's never exactly been prone to worrying unduly. Perhaps selfishly, he was always too preoccupied with deflecting worry from himself, and in turn he's tried to give those he cares about a certain amount of the faith he wasn't always handed freely. What fears he has he prefers to meet head on, with action one way or another.

There hasn't been much he could do for Bucky until very recently, unless you count indirect ways like taking out the remains of Hydra, which he would've done regardless. Barring that, all he's really had is worry, and no small amount of regrets. It's stuck, like the guilt and the grief.

Still, he can keep those to himself, and keep an eye on things in the meantime.
]

Well, it's good to see you. [ He'd been prepared to wait much longer than this. He wipes some of the water from his face. ] Looks like things are calming down out here, wherever the hell that is.

[ There's a sinking feeling in Bucky's chest that he hadn't noticed until he started to feel the relief of it at Steve's words. The two of them have been through quite a bit together. They've seen each other weak and vulnerable and neither of them have ever been anything but glad for it.

A part of Bucky still wants to run and hide what he is now from Steve, but he's not going to do that. Maybe the braver thing to do is admit that a part of him really needs Steve to heal, even when he's not sure he deserves it.
]

It's good to see you, too, buddy.

[ And he means it as much as he ever has, voice not quite as even as he might have liked, so naturally he changes the topic as quickly as he can. ]

Have they told you what this place is? We're going to have to be silent once the rain stops.

[ Steve's had plenty of cause to doubt his own welcome in Bucky's life, and watching him go into the tube after all of it — he'd understood, he really had, but the fact remained that he still hadn't really gotten his best friend back. He's not without some relief himself that Bucky says the words and seems to mean them.

He shakes his head at the question, frowning again as he glances around them.
]

Why, what happens when the rain stops?

[personal profile] lednikovyy 2018-04-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Rain masks our voices. There are monsters here that are attracted to sound.

[ That sounds incredibly stupid when he says it out loud. He'd been dubious at first, himself, but he's seen what footage they have now. ]

You can't punch them.

[ There's just a hint of a smile in his eyes. Maybe it's not entirely appropriate, but it's nice to have a minute here with Steve that's only a little life-or-death. It's been a while. ]

[personal profile] paragon 2018-04-12 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ It doesn't sound stupid to him; it sounds impossible. Not the monsters, necessarily, but how do you not make sound?

The gallows humor isn't unfamiliar between them, from long before the army, and that'd had its own special brand. There were plenty of times Steve would crack a joke when he hardly had the air in his lungs to spare for it just to get the worried look off Bucky's face.
]

Why not? [ It's the only possible answer to that challenge, a little bit of sounds fake in the slight lift of his eyebrow in return, but it's an honest question, too. ]

[personal profile] lednikovyy 2018-04-12 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Because they'll eat your fist.

[ Really, how else is he supposed to answer that? He's really missed Steve these past few years on the run. In the years before that, he hadn't known to miss his, but after his memories started coming back, it had been like a hole in his chest--a reminder that Steve is the closest thing to family Bucky has left in the world. There's not a dangerous situation he can imagine that wouldn't be vastly improved by Steve's presence. ]

Also the natives here don't respond well to anyone making noise because it puts them at risk. As long as we're stuck here, we have to at least pretend to play by their rules. They would be pretty upset that we're even talking in the rain. We need to get you one of their little cell phones so that I'm not the only one who sucks at typing on it.

Speak for yourself, pal.

[ It's good-natured, and Steve's grateful for how easy it is to fall into the familiarity of it, just as he was on the quinjet. But there's still a line between his eyebrows as he pulls a somewhat searching gaze from Bucky to look around them, the buildings he could barely see before in the storm, processing what Bucky's saying and that he's . . . well, not in Kansas anymore. Again.

Steve looks back at him.
]

You got someplace where you can catch me up?

[ Bucky looks around quickly. His room isn't soundproofed, but with the storm dying down they should still have a little more time for some quiet noise. It's safer than doing it out here. ]

You can come back to my place and get cleaned up and tell you what I know. Then we can get you in touch with the natives.

Try not to track too much sand in. We can't exactly vacuum here.
