It's early in the day when it happens. The red dust that seems to be everywhere sweeps through the city streets, mixing with the steady patter of rain and making it hard to see and breathe. All red and leaving the taste of copper if inhaled, what could have been an easy day without any trouble quickly becomes anything but. While those in the community are heading for cover or finding ways to continue on through it, the new arrivals begin waking up in different cities all over the world. There won't be anyone to greet them, and leaving the room through the door is their choice - after doing so, they'll immediately step out into the city they were assigned. The streets are empty, houses abandoned, everything crumbling and in ruins. There will be signs noting their location, which they'll catch a glimpse of before a sharp push forward causes darkness to engulf them.

Waking up for the second time, in Reims but not in the Reset Room, they'll come to inside the red dust as it whips through the streets of the community. They won't be alone for long. Another person will be waking up beside them, and after a few moments of disorientation, try to attack. They might have weapons or use their hands, and they will not stop until they've taken a fatal blow. Their blood is dust, and they, along with their weapons, disintegrate after they've died. Can you stop them on your own? Will someone come to your aid?

The Sight of Lightning

The day after the storm, the same red dust will find its way through Reims and come into contact with every person. Since the dust is everywhere, some might not notice that it's floating through the community and know that something is off. The effects don't begin until night fall, where everyone will feel the desire to seek out companionship of many different kinds. Though it is not always the case, the people that saw each other in color will "want" to be with that person more strongly than they might already, and will be more likely to confess or do something about it. Some might feel an intense need to be around another person, though not necessarily sexually - almost as if they need that person around them to be happy or content. For some, it might be a desire that can only be fulfilled by more than one person.

The effects wear off the next time the person gets wet. This can be a splash of water across the face or fully submerged. Or even drinking something.

[She walked quietly over the floorboards, pulling out a phone so that he could see it and tapping on it. When she did, the message came through clearly enough, and the thing made next to no noise as it was being used, not even the faint 'vibrations' that sometimes phones made.]

We usually do not speak at all.

[She made sure he'd seen it, the act more of a demonstration of the facts of their life than because she planned to use it for the rest of their talk.]

Once things calm down, you will be given a phone and new clothes that make less sound.

[ What the girl is presenting him is certainly off, especially the whole idea of typing over speaking (it looks too difficult), but he's not about to question it. With murderers that disappear into dust outside, this isn't the most far-fetched thing that could happen. ]

Got it. Be quiet because of the Sound Eaters. [ His brows furrow at that. ] And those are -- real? You ever see one?

[She nodded and tapped at her phone for a moment before pulling up a set of photos. They were blurred and unclear. The creature had been good at avoiding a clear shot, but it was obviously monstrous. Limbs were reminiscent of humanity, but it was like the thing was mishapen, twisted, almost as if you'd used the parts of a human but forgotten how to put it together. Pity she hadn't gotten a real clear view.]

This was one of the second stage of their growth. I have not seen the first or latter, except in footage. The young look like violent children, and are supposed to be extremely fast.

[danzan]

Jesus Christ. [ The exclamation escapes him before he can stop it from coming. Logan reaches out without asking, but pulls his hand back before he can touch the screen. ] Can you -- does that thing, can you make the pictures bigger? [ The term is 'zoom in', but he's not familiar with techie lingo like that. ]

How do they move? [ Looking at its terrible proportions, the animal in Logan's brain wonders why the Sound Eater doesn't have a tail. ] Straight line, crooked? It looks like it shouldn't be able to balance on legs like that...

No. It is a static image. There are very few consistent photos. They move too quickly.

... they are jerky and spasmodic in their motions. Strange, and as if their bodies did not fit together right. I have not had time to observe in detail.

[danzan]

[ That has Logan's brows furrowing, and his mind he pictures the things moving as Rei describes -- it has his hackles raising and his skin prickling, because it just doesn't seem real. ]

Jerky. Like [ he lifts his hand, but not without sharp twitches of his wrist to get his hand flicking and twisting, the muscles of his arm going tight and relaxing in an arrhythmic, disjointed way; like he's barely holding on to the control needed to make even this gesture ] that?

[lilithsoul]

[She watched the flicking and twisting, observing the way that his hand moved and finally nodding. It was at least close, even if the way that they had moved almost seemed like...]

Close. There are times that it seemed joints popped in and out, like its motion was impossible somehow, or they were made more of cartilage than bone.

But you have the idea.

[danzan]

It breaks and fixes itself. [ It's just a hypothesis based on her descriptions, but he nods his head. Maybe hypotheses are all he can settle for right now. ] All right.

Should I be watching out for those when I go back out there? [ He means the storm, of course. Logan doesn't want to leave her hanging, but there're still people in all that dust -- people he can't leave alone. ] All that noise?

[lilithsoul]

Possibly, yes? We haven't been able to research them much. [She shook her head at the question, though.] The storm will be making a lot of noise. It seems to keep them away when the sound is everywhere like this.

A brief rest, though we keep quiet most of the time.

[danzan]

Got it.

[ He has to go. Looking back at the closed front door, he wets his lip once before affording the girl one more glance. ] Thanks. For this.

I'm Logan. [ A pause. ] If I make it after this, you mind telling me more about these things?

[lilithsoul]

I am Rei Ayanami, but Ayanami is best. [A moment and then a quick nod, looking outside. She'd be going too, but in a little bit. She needed a rest first.] And you may. I do not know what I will have to share, but I will help as I can.

Honestly, [ he laughs a bit, but more out of exhaustion than amusement ] any help is good to me.

Ayanami. [ He'll admit the chances of him remembering her name is slim, not after the overwhelm of everything else, but he'll do his best. ] Okay.

I'll see you.

[ And then he turns and leaves -- but not without closing the door after him, just as quietly as Rei had when they first entered. Logan's learning already. ]
