Put a Sock in It

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, Constance, with a child hugging her leg - a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer. There are others like you in the room, those who'd come earlier. They're there to help.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home – with or without the help of those who have come before you.

Revery Alone

To make a prairie it takes a clover and one bee. One clover, and a bee. And revery. The revery alone will do, if bees are few.

As the community continues to expand, beyond what any of the natives were prepared for or could have expected, there's been a noticeable strain on resources. The stores of food that the natives had worked to stockpile in the green house are dwindling faster than all the hands chipping in can replenish. Rationing has become even more strict and group meals at the town hall have gone down to dinner once a week until the shortage is taken care of. The natives, though they mean well, are nervous people who tend to react poorly when confronted with issues that are further than the scope of what they can reasonably handle.

Fortunately, this issue isn't one of those times. The natives rally together to get all members of the community to fish on the rainy day. Some will be asked to take the fish from the river to the greenhouse, others will prep the fish, and some will be tasked with preparing the fish to be dried out. It's all hands on deck for this one - no other shifts or jobs will have to be completed and at the end of the day, there'll be a fish fry in the town hall for everyone. Rustic potatoes, a few loaves of baked bread, but mostly just a lot of fish.

Not long after the first wave arrivals came through the Reset Room, the natives took everyone to see the Sound Eaters.. Smaller than the other young, a 'child' had climbed up and out of its shell, and wasn't the same as the others. Human in form, it had dark hair and androgynous features. No eyes. No mouth. Through its behavior, those watching this birth could see that it was in command.

Over the last few months this new creature hasn't been seen. Not around the tower by those who watch the Sound Eater nest or otherwise. But then the rain stops, the scent of freshly baked fish lingering in the air and it comes. Sitting on the edge of the fountain at the center of the community, its head moves to and fro as if listening. It doesn't attack. It doesn't speak or approach anyone. If anyone gets too close the red dust swirls up and clouds vision, clogs the throat, and pushes until the person is backed away.

This will continue until, no matter how many people crowd into the center of the community to watch, midday where the dust will swirl up and the creature will go.

ok, that's not entirely true. she's been listening as attentively as she can, after all, which still isn't as attentively as she might like, but she's caught the basics. but all of this... it seems almost too much to believe. one moment, she was there, and now she's here. away from jupiter, away from neptune, away from group south and the counselor and...

but none of that matters right now, does it? she has to focus - she has to focus. and besides, maybe the others are here with her. she can look for them as soon as she's finished "altering" the jumpsuit, which she's decided to do by sitting on the side of a sandpath and tearing (gently, if a bit panicked) at the upper arm of her left sleeve with her one hand and her teeth.

she's got to find the others. she's got to find safety. but to do any of that, she's got to get her wing out. ]

[ okay, fishing! fishing she can do. except for that part where she can't, she's never caught even a single fish at camp, and that was with two arms, what do they expect her to do with a fishing rod??

she just... sort of looks at the rod. then back to her drenched feathers. there is an alarm in her eyes that only bad memories of summer camp could have inspired. please, god, someone teach this idiot girl how to fish. ]

no, she can breathe. the dust isn't overpowering here by any means, even if she's close enough for it to be an issue. no, this is fear, pure and simple - the absolute terror of seeing something that could kill you too late to stay away from it. this is it. a sound eater, right? nobody told her it'd be so... human.

she stands as still as a statue, not even daring to breathe faster than she can manage to keep quiet. her eyes - all of them - are trained on the thing, her hand and wing reaching up and blocking what little noise is escaping her mouth. she has to get away. she has to run. she has to walk, get back as quietly as possible and then run and hide where nobody- nothing- can see her.

she doesn't do any of that. she holds back a whimper and waits for salvation. ]

[Venus' salvation comes in the form of a hand on her shoulder, a gentle but firm clasp. It's hard to lead the curious away, and even though A2 has no need to breathe in a true sense, the dust is a good deterrent. Her fuel filter is brand new, and she'd do well to not push the only one she's got to the limits. Especially with all the dust and sand that this thing kicks up.

A2 tugs, still gentle, attempting to pull Venus away from the danger of the sound eater.

If she stays planted... Well, A2 can always lift her up and away.]

ARRIVAL

[Daisy is among the others in silence, eyes darting between the person 'speaking to them' and the others that seem just as lost and in shock as she does. She recognizes that the woman is using sign language, but has no idea what she is saying. Until she looks down at the device given to her and it is translating her words in such a way that she can understand what she is saying. Her heart is racing in her chest and the urge to talk is growing, especially as she’s told she can’t.

Clutching the device tightly, Daisy looks over to the person next to her after they are asked whether or not they agree to these rules. That they must stay silent if they want to venture outside. Either way she’s risking the unknown, but Daisy knows if she doesn’t agree, it would bother her more. She needs to know what’s out there. To know where she is, and how she’s gotten here. Someone has to hold the answers.]

EXPLORING

[Over and over again recently, Daisy has been put into situations against her will. Walking along the sand path, as others are doing, it’s probably easy for them to spot that she is new here. The way she keeps looking around in confusion as others are busy using their devices to communicate with each other, or using sing language. Hand going to her neck when someone openly stares at it, Daisy can feel the gauze still there covering the healing wound from Fitz taking out her inhibitor.

Spotting someone by themselves, Daisy goes up to them and opens her mouth to ask a question before remembering the agreement. Waving her hand to get their attention, Daisy chews on the inside of her cheek in frustration as she is forced to use the device to communicate with them. Typing quickly to them.]

How long do we have to keep this up for?

HOUSE #13

[The house is decently sized, but pretty bare. Did they have to seriously buy furniture? Although at this point, Daisy is so exhausted and worn out that she could probably just sleep on the bare floor. It seems others were starting to make their way into the house as well.]

You just get here too?

[She saw others throughout the town signing and she could understand why. It seems easier in the long run. She should probably learn the language, even if she plans on getting out of here as soon as she can figure out how to do that.]

REVERY ALONE

[Daisy has never really fished before, or dealt with preparing fish to be cooked. Thankfully all she had to do was lay them out to dry, which was unsurprisingly smelly but it was better than having to gut them.

After all of that, Daisy didn’t even care about how flavored the fish were or not. She was starving. She only takes one slice of bread because she knows supplies are limited. She debates going back to the house, but, that means dealing with her food being wet by the time she got back there. Instead she takes a seat next to someone, smiling softly at them before digging into her food.]

Not the worst thing I’ve ever eaten.

INVICTUS

[Daisy honestly didn’t want to believe this was real, but then she’s seeing one of these ‘creatures’ for herself and she is horrified. Despite not wanting to think they actually have to be silent, Daisy is because she fears what could happen if she isn’t. What was really unsettling is how human it appears in the way it stands, and yet it had no eyes or a mouth.

Of course she doesn’t have her gun to just take care of it. That would make too much noise. Still, she can’t help but move a little closer. Closer than a lot of the others are willing to get. Which ends up being a mistake as she starts to struggle to breathe and her vision is hazy. Is this dust really sentient? Or is the sound eater controlling this? Either way, Daisy moves back trying not to make a sound as she struggles to catch her breath.

Yeah. That was a dumb idea.]

[ Erik's annoyance at being touched? Palpable. Beyond softly batting the person's hand away though he doesn't...do anything about it. The whole being manhandled by strangers is not his jam, not by any stretch.

One question sounds like some dumb nonsense, however, and his eyebrows are doing this vague mambo on his forehead by the time he speaks up. ]

Are we really supposed to believe that's the entire damn story?

2. Revery Alone

[ Someone takes a look at the breadth of Erik's shoulders and decides he can take as many fish as he can carry from the river to the greenhouse. Which happens to be quite a few containers, actually, but he also volunteers to do the nasty work, deft fingers working with thin knives to remove even thinner bones.

Anyone who mentions tossing the heads too is getting an arched eyebrow. ]

[ Erik notices the thing and touches the wrist of whoever is closest, jutting his jaw in its direction.

His expression is clear: What the hell is that? ]

4. A Card of Wild Design

[ Want to run into Erik somewhere else? He's gonna be golem-ing in his under porch housing, exploring everywhere on the sandpaths, and is scheduled to work soundproofing anything anyone might need. ]

i got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone [revery alone]

[It only takes Nill an hour and three failed attempts at reeling in a fish to realize she has no talent at all for fishing. By then, her hair, wings, and jumpsuit are all soaked through from the rain, and she is more than willing to take a bin full of fish to the greenhouse for preparation. Scaling and gutting isn't really something she's looking forward to, but she's willing to put in her time just like everyone else. She knows what it's like to go hungry, and she's glad the whole community has seemed to come together to nip that possibility in the bud.

She's thankful when instead of getting elbow-deep in fish gook, she's asked to get elbow-deep in flour instead. Baking is Nill's wheelhouse, and she feels much more comfortable kneading dough than doing almost anything else in the kitchen. But there's only so much kneading to be done before the dough has to rest, and while it does she sits just outside the greenhouse, under an awning and out of the rain, looking out at the rain tamping down the dust. Her hair is pulled back into a ponytail and she has to blow her bangs out of her eyes, but overall it's a comfortable place to sit and watch people. She has a loaf of bread already made, still warm and settled beside her inside a towel, just in case anyone gets hungry between trips to the river and the greenhouse.]

[Nill has been staring out the window of House 6 at the child sitting in the fountain for an hour. At first glance, they had just seemed like a normal kid, enjoying the morning. But when she looks back, she realizes something is... wrong.

The child has no eyes or mouth. Nill feels a strange mixture of revulsion and fascination as she stands there watching. They haven't moved, haven't made a sound. Before she knows it, her feet have brought her to the porch, as if on their own, and she's making her way across the sandy paths towards the figure. She doesn't make a sound either, and even the gentle rustle of her fathers as her wings flick seems somehow muted.

Maybe it's just because her blood is pounding her ears.

She walks slowly, as if she could startle them. Nill has seen horrors before. Kids created without the ability to see, some missing parts or having extra ones, like her. But nothing like this. She can't look away, even as red dust starts kicking up around her. She's staring right at the creature's face, and though it doesn't have eyes, she has the feeling it's staring back.]

[ Kazuki has seen her go about back and forth almost as much as he has. Getting the job in food preparation couldn't be more perfect for him, so he's been rather content, in spite of everything else. He'll pause beside her in between his cooking. ]

[Keeping the silence is not hard, but 2B is a little surprised by how difficult it is to keep moving once she catches sight of her first human.

Alive, and so many of them. There's a child, even, and her throat feels tight with emotions she can't quite categorize. She could cry, or laugh with joy, but both would make noise, draw danger, and she's glad for the visor over her eyes that hides her expression. Silence is easy, hiding her feelings is easy, and following the orders of a human?

The Commander would say she was made... well, not for that specifically. But as a YoRHa unit, she certainly feels an obligation to help these humans in any way she can. When the option comes to leave or stay, she doesn't hesitate. She steps right outside, begins to follow the pathway of sand, eyes open and scanning for threats, for more humans, a small smile tugging up the corners of her lips.

She hadn't expected to wake up to this, certainly, and despite the danger she feels a strange sense of peace.]

It would be fish.

The catching and the preparing, 2B does that with no complaints. It's- interesting, to observe the way the humans operate together, to watch and then to mimic to do her part to move things along. The scent of cooking fish is pleasant, but she knows better than to eat any of it. She'd like to stay alive, is all, and that's why, when the meal itself rolls around, she takes her plate and holds it out to the nearest human she can find. With her other hand, she taps out a message on the device.]

You may have mine, I don't need it.

[Once it becomes very clear that the creature isn't posing an immediate threat, 2B plants her feet just in front of it, in its line of sight, with the intention of putting herself between anyone it might decide to break its current pattern of not attacking with. She may not have a sword or a spear, but she has her bare fists and they've gotten the job done before.

The thing is disquieting, though, and it makes her frown as she stares it down. Does it cause the humans discomfort to interact with her when they can't see her eyes? She'll have to find out soon, she supposes, but that's hardly the issue at hand.

If anyone comes to close, she'll put her arm out, shake her head for them to stop, and if that doesn't work she isn't above reaching her hand out to wrap around their wrist, stop them physically.

After all, what kind of YoRHa unit doesn't protect every human they come across?]

[ Majima stopped mid-sentence, even as he was turning toward her. Unlike most of the other arrivals, he didn't appear to be using a device, but words still appeared on the surface of 2B's phone as if he were typing in real-time. ]

2B? It is you, right? Holy shit, it worked!

Bucky already works as a hunter, so the idea of fishing is a nice change, even if it's not something he has a whole lot of experience with. Not only is he managing to catch quite a few fish, but he's also offered to put worms on hooks for anyone who might be squeamish about it and he's happy to help them handle the fish, too. If he sees anyone looking unsure, he'll make the offer of help.

Later, he'll help prep the fish, too, cleaning and skinning them with quick precision. He'll leave the cooking to people who didn't spend months eating cold spam out a can on the good days, but handling the raw fish is something he can definitely help with. He eats more than the average person, so the least he can do is really pull his weight when it comes to gathering and prepping.

Training keeps him quiet by nature. It doesn't take a whole lot of additional effort for his steps to stay silent on the sand path, but the faint smell of dust wafts through the air and then he looks up and freezes. The creature is right there where anyone could get hurt in a moment of carelessness.

He looks around, making sure there's no one who's at risk and then he considers his next move carefully. Sure, he'd promised not to approach the monsters, but he hadn't seen any in their town before now. This isn't an opportunity he should pass up. He's the only one he's putting at risk.

With renewed caution, he steps forward slowly, approaching the creature. He's silent and he knows it. As long as no one else is here, he can get into its space and back out without much fuss. It's when he gets closer that the rest dust comes, blinding and choking him, but he doesn't panic. He's been blinded and choked, immobilized and broken down until he wasn't fully human anymore. This will pass, he tells himself, and that's the only thing that keeps his choking silent. His mission is to stay silent and stay alive. If he dies now, he won't even see what it does. There's nothing to gain. It's not the mission, he tells himself.

The dust pushes him and he's walking backwards with it blindly, using what care he can with every step to make sure that his boot touches sand until it clears and he can see again.

His heart is pounding in his chest as he looks around frantically. It seems he's no longer alone with the creature. Great.

It's not until the creature is gone from the fountain that Bucky dares to return. He sits against the fountain, not too close to where the creature had been, but close enough that he can stare at the spot he'd been standing when he'd choked. He stares at it, unblinking and face emotionless. His back is ramrod straight, posture strained and muscles tense. Where he often has his gloves on and his sleeves rolled down, he hasn't bothered with that precaution now. His sleeves are rolled up, metal arm bare from the elbow down. His mind is somewhere else for a long moment, caught in dust and choking blind.

In that moment, his training had kicked in, calm like a machine. He hadn't been Bucky Barnes anymore because he couldn't be if he wanted to get out of it alive. That wasn't the training of Bucky Barnes. This isn't the life of Bucky Barnes anymore. He has Bucky's memories and lately he has more good days than bad, but today he feels very little like that life was his at all.

He's an asset. A tool. Little more. There's so much blood on his hands and he remembers enough of it that he knows those aren't the actions of Bucky Barnes, a man he knows well enough to know the difference. He feels nothing about this. Tomorrow or the next day when he feels like Bucky Barnes again, these thoughts will scare him, but now he feels nothing because that's what his training says to do. He's not the Winter Soldier anymore, but he's not Bucky Barnes, either.

It doesn't work. I tried. It's like a force field around it.

[She's just sent the message and looked up again when she realizes who it is. Hands still holding up the phone, Daisy stops walking closer to him. It's clear by the expression on her face that she recognizes him, and she's not sure how to approach him.]

[She hasn't been here that long. Only a few weeks maybe. But she still finds herself missing Wakanda and her family. When she hears that new arrivals are starting to filter in to the city she hurries to the reset room with hope filling her heart. She wants so badly for T'Challa to be one of the new arrivals, even if it is selfish of her. She waits outside, offering a smile and guidance to any of the new arrivals that need help.

Hours pass and with no sign of her brother, Shuri feels a little deflated. She lingers long after dark and only retreats to head back home when she's certain that no one will be around to see the sadness on her face. It's better if no one knows just how homesick she is.]


REVERY ALONE;
[Baba had insisted that she grow up learning how to do many of the same things as her brother. T'Challa had been so much older than she was that it was often her brother teaching while their father guided them both. Fishing was one of the things that she had learned from a young age, and it was something that Shuri had worked hard to excel at. She didn't take to it naturally, no matter how hard she tried. It wasn't until she came up with all matter of inventions to make the job easier on her that it became something she could really do.

Here, she was without those inventions. But she's older now and better able to take to the task of fishing with ease. She helps catch as many as possible and then prepares them to be taken to the greenhouse. After a few bundles being brought she stays at the greenhouse and works with a partner there to prep the fish for cooking.

That night, when the fish has been fried and everyone is eating, Shuri is filled with a sense of home. The community working together this way makes her feel a little less homesick, and puts a content smile on her face. She sits among the community children for a while simply due to her own age, before pulling back and going to find what looks like a friendly face. She's spent so long cooped up in her garage working on projects that she often forgets how important it is to meet others and form friendships. It's something she's going to work harder on doing, starting tonight.]

[Shuri stays in her garage workshop often, but does emerge to interact with the children of the community. In some ways she's still a child herself, and likes knowing that she can help care for the younger ones. She teaches them science as she's able. But in a place like this, education can't be traditional. It's more focused on survival. So Shuri teaches them how to create things to make their lives safer, make things easier. She teaches them that despite the fact they are young and come from a place with limited resources, they are capable of creating anything they put their mind to.

The child she's been told about lurking near the fountain isn't like the other children here. It doesn't seem capable of anything other than lurking and listening. When she hears word of such a child just staying out in the open, she hurries over to spend the day observing and recording. When she heard someone approaching, she puts her fingers to her lip and snaps her head over in their direction to fix them with a look.

Maybe if they're going to interrupt her, she can put them to good use. She beckons them to step in closer with a crook of her finger.]

[Daisy is going back to grab another drink when someone approaches her. It's still weird to hear so many voices, even though she's only been here for a few days. In that time she's become used to the silence in some ways.]

Oh, um, I helped dry the fish out. Seemed like a job I could actually handle.

[Filling up her cup, Daisy looks at her again wondering why she was asking.]

Or maybe you just discover that even he's been drafted into the community effort, hovering at the bank with a fishing rod in his tassels. He's obviously never fished before, or he would have immediately realized that he's a terrible person to try it--even a relatively small fish is strong enough to yank the rod straight out of his tassels as it makes to swim away. Oh no!]

[Some people will try to attack this strange newborn Sound Eater, no doubt. A lot more people will probably come to gawk. Carpet..... is coming with the intention of being a Disney Princess, apparently. This one looks and acts so different..... he wants to understand it. He tries waving and signing in greeting, but--predictably, given the lack of eyes--it goes unheard. He even tries to approach and offer it an apple, as a gesture of friendship--do they even eat at all, with no mouths?--, but the swirling dust is just too strong; he's forced backwards as though by a vicious gale of wind, unable to get anywhere near arm's reach. Why is it here, if it doesn't want to interact with or even attack anyone? What does it want?

[He woke up, as he often did after dying, disoriented and a bit amnesiac. Where had he just been? Where was he now? Was this a world he'd seen before? He barely even remembered his own name.

Memory came trickling back in as the situation was explained to him. He listened intently, nodding and taking it all seriously. Yes, yes, be quiet, I understand. Whatever these sound eater creatures were, they had completely ravaged this world, forcing its inhabitants to live in unnatural quiet. How frightful they must be. How miserable. Always alert and always afraid.

It would be delightful to watch.

He was often called to worlds that were in some sort of trouble. Danger and violence and fear attracted him like a rotting corpse attracted a fly. Was this world on the verge of the end? Maybe. Maybe he could push it in that direction.

Despite the weight of the situation, he stood with a big damn grin on his face.]

[Flagg was, as he was instructed to be, completely silent as he moved about, taking in his new surroundings. He didn't walk along the sandy paths, however. At least, not currently.

Rather, he floated above them, a few inches off of the ground. He was utterly still as he hovered in suspension; he did not bob up and down in the air nor did his levitation create any sort of force that pushed down at the sand below. To one who didn't know better, he could very well be a ghost.]

[It was so small. Merely a child. Could such a thing really devour even someone like him? He was used to the company of much more fearsome creatures. He couldn't seem to glean anything about the sound eater from its presence, which he found odd, but he was more interested in the others standing around him.

She wasn’t the type to wait for the natives to drop off what she wanted on her porch. As she padded along the sand path, though, she neared a stranger… Who wasn’t on the sand path at all. This was interesting.

An eyebrow was raised and Margo stopped a couple of feet away from him. She pulled out her device and easily typed in a message. Not speaking was becoming disturbingly easy for her. ]

[It's the first group of new arrivals since Caroline arrived herself, and already it seems to be less crazy. It's still raining, but there's no fake people popping up trying to kill anybody at least.

She wanders around near the reset room, watching to see who is here now and what they're like. She wouldn't admit it, but she's also waiting to see if anyone she knows shows up. She knows she should probably be doing her job, but today that's just going to have to wait.

She's happy to help out anyone new that needs a friendly face, even if she's on the lookout for friends...and enemies.]

[This entire ordeal has been a little more like roughing it than Caroline either enjoys or is used to, and having to fish is even worse. That said, at least she's a little better equipped now than when she was human. She doesn't use the fishing pole, instead wading out into the water slowly, intent on trying something.

She's motionless for a moment, then shoves her hand into the water with impressive quickness, grabbing the fish in a tight grip and lifting it into the air.]

[When she wakes up, she doesn't handle this well.

Frankly, she hadn't entirely expected to wake up at all. Sure, she always had ever since that first time after the Rising, but surely a bunch of scientists could figure out how to be done with her. Regardless, when she does wake up, it's simple to assume she's still there, in that lab in the mountains, about to be yet another experiment. There's people trying to strip her down, and at first she fights back.

She probably would have ended up killing someone if she hadn't been so light-headed.

It finally registers that she doesn't recognize these people. They seem scared, like they're trying to help, and though she doesn't trust any of this or anyone who tells her these things, something is definitely up. After agreeing to their silence, if only to take a look around, it becomes even more apparent that this is definitely fucked up.

She looks lost as she wanders around town in the rain, before finally finding a place to sit down. She claims the deck of house twelve, and spends quite a bit of time just sitting, looking out at the remains of this town, almost just waiting for some monster to crash through the glass.]

REVERY ALONE;

[Eventually, she has to eat. Eating means cooperating with the other people here, even if she's hesitant to throw herself into anything social.

She helps out with cleaning the fish. At least that'll let her release some of her tension as she cuts into something over and over. At first, she's not very good at it, but she gets the hang of it pretty quickly. Having to clean up the guts doesn't seem to phase her in the slightest, either, and she's quiet and focused as she goes about the work.

Until eventually, her knife slips, and she cuts into her thumb. She smothers a hiss behind her teeth, the only other audible reaction a 'shit' breathed nearly inaudibly.]

[ Logan's ears catch more than normal ears do. This means that he looks up from his place to the woman about two people away from him.

Despite the rush of rain outside, he's gotten so used to existing silently that it feels counterintuitive to call her out. Instead, he puts his fish down and lets his claw sink back into his body, and with a soft apology to the people working at his side, he makes his way towards the woman with his hand held out.

He flips it, palm up. Then wiggles his thumb.

It's an attempt to ask her if hers is all right. ]

Arrival/Exploring

[One moment, Mako is struggling to consciousness in Gipsy's escape pod, with Raleigh nowhere to be found, head spinning and body aching. The next, she's passing out again and waking up... Somewhere. There's dust in her nose and throat and eyes, and she chokes, scrambling up and pushing away the hands that try to help her up. She's panicking, thinking dizzyingly of the Marshal and Chuck, and of Raleigh feeding his oxygen to her in a desperate attempt to save her life, and now there's... nothing. This isn't the Shatterdome. From the look of it, this isn't even Hong Kong, and she argues with the people who wake her about her drivesuit, which they refuse to return because of the sound of the heavy armor plating, they say. Her dog tags, safely in their silicon edged silencers, are still looped around her neck.

She doesn't believe a word they tell her. None of it makes sense, and none of them know what she's talking about when she mentions the kaiju or the breach or the PPDC. She argues fruitlessly, exhausted and emotionally wrung out, but finally, she agrees to be silent just to get them to release her. And outside, nothing is what she expects it to be. The town is eerily quiet, and she wanders for a bit in her loose fitting jumpsuit and bare feet.

Mako tries to get the attention of the first person she runs into, fumbling for a split second to get the device she's been given out of her pocket to type a message.]

Revelry

[Mako is used to rationing, at least. Hong Kong had always been an exception—it was a port town stubborn enough to keep trade flowing, and the Marshal had leveraged his connections to ensure that the Shatterdome was well-supplied. When Mako had first arrived and found freshly made bread, Tendo had teased her for the face she made.

But this isn't Hong Kong, and Mako is used to buckling down and doing what needs to be done for the good of the group, so she doesn't complain when she's told to clean the freshly caught fish. The only problem is, the native who sits her down doesn't exactly give her a tutorial, and she's never done this before. After fumbling through scaling one of the fish, she finds herself peering down at it distastefully, trying to figure out how the hell you actually gut one. She tries to peer over to the person next to her to figure out how they're managing this... fun task.]

Invictus

[The first "sound eater" Mako sees is somehow less and more than she was expecting.

She's seen footage, and that was unsettling enough, but to see one sitting by the fountain in the center of town, observing and listening but doing nothing else, Mako feels the hair stand up on the back of her neck. This is disturbing in a way she's not used to. Watching a kaiju tear its way through a city, ripping through steel and glass and people like tissue paper is terrifying and utterly panic inducing, but this is... something else. It makes her stomach twist, and her eyes keep finding the stretch of smooth skin where its nose and mouth should be.

She isn't stupid or foolhardy enough to get close. Instead, she just watches, only looking away if someone approaches her.]

Do the creatures come into town often? Why isn't it doing anything?

Housing

[So, eventually, it's time to find somewhere to stay. Mako has nothing except the jumpsuit the natives gave her and her dog tags, and she discovers very quickly that the natives are assigning her housing. It's nice, she supposes, but she's determined not to think of it as "home", no matter what she tells the natives who speak to her.

It's not terrible, she tries to tell herself. The houses themselves are nice enough, but there's something about being shoved into a house with total strangers that rankles her. The Shatterdomes were different—those were essentially military installations, more barracks than anything else, and the people around her were all rangers or officers or staff. Coworkers. This is... not that.

She can't help that she looks a little on edge as she wanders the house she's been assigned, trying to figure out which rooms are free and if anyone else is here yet. The building is soundproofed, though, so after a moment or so, she calls out softly.]

[ Majima couldn't really sign with both hands occupied with a fish, but he managed a small smile and a shrug as he laid his latest victim out on the table. He was at about the same place as Mako was, and tilted his fish so that she could see what he was doing with his knife.

Slowly, he inserted his blade into the fish near its tail, then began to draw the knife towards its head.The motion was smooth; he'd been on the fishing team before he switched jobs. ]

SCAVENGING

[ as much as he would love to help the community out with the current food scarcity, tony has ventured outside of the town on a supply hunt instead. (trust him, it's better if he doesn't go fishing or even attempt prepping meals when he has other things on his mind.) he is determined to locate a junkyard, recycling center or anywhere with possible tech in it because he needs to stockpile materials if he is going to start tackling his mental to-do list. whatever he couldn't get from within the community itself, he is planning on finding out here.

this is also a good opportunity for him to explore the outer regions and, perhaps, test his luck with his suit's response system.

factoring in the need to stay quiet and the disappointing reality that parts don't just fall out of the sky, he will have to spread his hunts over the course of a few weeks (if not more) to acquire everything he needs. so to start off, he is going to familiarize himself with the area for easier navigation in the future while he prioritizes collecting what he needs the most first. it probably wasn't the best idea to come out here on his own, but he's always been bad at asking for help and what's a little risk, right?

t is going to be spending most of the day out here. he doesn't expect company, but if he does run into any folks dumb enough to brave the outskirts alone and defenseless too, he'll be friendly and open to them joining him as long as they promise not to stare too obviously at the r.t. node in his chest. ]

that's not the creepiest thing he's seen in his life, so tony is just going to stare at what he's pretty certain is the kid's rendition of what doctor doom looks like beneath his mask for like a hot minute before he continues on his way. he is sure this is all very chilling and fascinating (especially by the amount of people who have gathered around the fountain), but if all it's going to do is sit there like some weird, nonthreatening wind up doll, then he'll let everyone else have a crack at observing and/or capturing it.

he has more important things to do, which does, yes, include a coffee run. in fact, if you want caffeine too, hit him up. it can be an adventure.

he will be making a quick trip back to his garage over at house 11 to drop off his bag first, but afterward, he'll be susceptible to all run-ins and ambushes. ]

She heads back to the house instead, device glued to her hand, and inside she runs into someone new. One of her assigned housemates, she assumes. She keeps her voice low, because she's not entirely sure she trusts the soundproofing just yet, and she's not in the mood to test its limits.

Wow, check out that... Whatever it is in his chest. Mako's eyes flick down to it for a split second, but then she catches herself and shifts her gaze back up to his.]

[ frank and micro carry their peanutsesque booth through the morning rain for the second consecutive month and set up in front of the path just outside the reset room. in addition to the painted letters on the top that say "INFO BOOTH" in big block letters, there's a banner skirting the front table that reads: Reims for Dummies. which if you are in any way observant you'll notice there's an app on your device that matches up with the words. it works much like a search engine or a faq on any webpage, but it only contains information about this place. the booth is manned by david, frank and beverly in shifts throughout the day, usually flanked by a thick brown pitbull named max.

frank, or hotdog as he'll introduce himself, is keen on signing short sentences and having his guest hold up their device to translate rather than type on his. as the rain beats down around them, he becomes less interested in playing "mayor" as he instead relocates his chair to a patch of grass some ways behind the booth where david or bev now sit. he pulls out his guitar from where it was hiding behind the stand and starts to play a familiar tune. max lays next to him with an ear pricked like he knows it too and frank finds himself humming before long. it's not like he's doing anyone a disservice by ignoring the newbies, he's the most unwelcoming and intimidating of the three of them, and micro can explain tech shit way better than he can. now that he's put in his work on the device app, he's hoping to answer way less questions today in general.

people who know frank might even think he's being a little antisocial, his hood up and his bruised face turned away from the oncoming herd of new arrivals. maybe he's just numb to the whole experience, or maybe it's the single-digit of hours he's collected in sleep over the week. either seems just as likely. ]

ii. gimme back that filet-o-fish

[ carving out space for himself and max on the far corner of the riverbank, frank casts his line while the dog wades into the shallows and snaps at fish as they jump out of the water. he'll be there for a good chunk of the afternoon and will be happy to clean and filet the fish to prep for the fry at town hall. he takes his hood down though the rain is still coming down pretty good, blinking water out of his sunken eyes ringed in purple and yellowing bruises. he might offer a soft smile or a wave to those he recognizes or whomever he may have met in the reset room, but he's focused on his task up until the end. ]

iii. i'm looking for a place to start

[ frank noped out of the soundeater kid situation pretty fast after reminding people to take video if they were going to hang around (like morons.) he takes to his treehouse as has become traditional. he's sitting out on the steps with a container of hot coffee and a bottle of whiskey next to him while he drinks a mixture of the two from a tin cup and watches the passersby. max is curled up next to him and every now and then he lets out a soft doggy snore or cracks an eye open with a sigh at a person's approach. other than that dog and man both are brooding and silent, as in a 180 from his usual frank is determined to interact with as few people as possible this time around. ]

[Mako thinks she's settling in, mostly, although she's still antsy and generally annoyed. Still, the other people here have been welcoming and helpful, so things could be worse. As a matter of fact, she's discovered the welcome basket Frank left for her, and the little drawing of a hotdog would be more mysterious if he didn't refer to himself by that name in the FAQ she received.

So, she tracks him down, and doesn't make a beeline for Max like she secretly wants to. Instead, she just holds the slip of paper up.]

[ The initiation process, or whatever they called it, had been easy enough to adapt to. He'd fought at the beginning, on reflex, choking on dust and knocking out a greeter or two when they moved to guide or bathe or re-dress before he figured out what was going on, but soon it became evident their motivations weren't as nefarious as he had assumed, at least on second glance, even if he didn't have any idea who 'they' were, or even where he was, a fact that itched along nerves and made him twitchier than he'd been when he'd left the Citadel. Max spoke little enough to begin with, the plea to be silent and the instruction in how they did communicate was little more than a formality, at least. He kept quiet, and watched, even if nerves remained strung tight and his attention roved ceaselessly around the space, looking for potential threats, doors, anything he might need to be aware of in case things went south. More answers would come soon enough, and while he didn't trust any of it, it was significantly less rough than the War Boys' handling of him. Which in and of itself was more reason not to trust it, he decided, but at least here he could probably bide his time about it. The threat wasn't immediate.

So he exits through the door when he's offered it after as much explanation as they seem inclined to give, out into the village beyond. Follows the path as it unfolds in front of him, eyes intently focused on everything around him and tries not to look so much like a stray dog in an unfamiliar place. It's all too apparent regardless, the lines of his body angled as if he's constantly expecting an attack, but it's not for lack of trying. He stares at everything, lingers at the greenery he hasn't seen in ages, marvels over the technology and trappings of civilization, real civilization, not the limping, half-dead thing that's left where he came from.

He probably looks pretty obvious about it all the same. ]

[ It's with numb fingers that he's pressed into service, the wrong place at the wrong time and he finds himself with a bucket pressed into his hands, a knife to follow, and a gesture towards a table with others up to their elbows in entrails and blood. He stares, baffled, as if he doesn't quite understand the intent, but the woman shoos at him so he starts moving. Stares at the others around him already hard at work, not that he needs the instruction, necessarily. He knows how to gut an animal and prepare it for eating, even if it's been years since he's seen a proper fish. So he starts in, hands knowing the way through the task while his attention stays half on the carcass and half roving among the crowd. ]

[ He doesn't see what the anxious throng of people in the center of town is so antsy about, at least not at first. A group of people is generally something Max makes a point to avoid, but given the level of unknowns he figures it's worth the hassle this time. So he picks his way among the crowd, inelegant and rough, pushing as needed until he can get a good look.

There's a lot Max has seen since the world shook itself apart. Things turned grotesque in the fall-out, men with no eyes and animals with two many heads. Roadkill on end, and once a rabbit that looked like it had been turned inside out but still insisted on going on living that way, at least for a while. But this? It unsettled in a way he hadn't been in a while. A human born from a bug carapace, or something similar anyway, moving like something that wasn't anything close to human.

So these were the monsters they had warned about. Among them, no less, although he supposed that was the point of monsters. His lip curled, and he watched until it was gone. Just to be sure.

Provided the crowd disperses after, he'll step closer to the fountain, moving towards where the thing was, just to be sure, makes a circuit of it looking for any sign of it. ]

[Akane's... not really much of an outdoorsperson. She knows the theory of fishing. She's done some reading. Feeding habits and habitats. Preparation and gutting. Preservation and drying. She knows a lot about how to do it.

It's just that... she's never actually done any of it.

She does the best she can. Everyone needs to pull together and help out as much as possible, right? She's not a complete novice with a knife, but she knows she's lagging behind. Supermarket fish had always been good enough for her. Cleaning fresh fish is just something she doesn't have any experience in, and despite knowing what should be done, it's hard to put that into practice.

Break time comes as a relief for her. She washes her hands as quietly as she can, thankful that the Sound Eaters don't seem to hunt by smell as well as sound. And if they do... well. There's only so much one girl can do when she's been covered in fish guts for the better part of the day. She offers a tired smile to one of the other workers, tilting her head as though to say, "How are you holding up?"]

[Kazuki doesn't put up a fight when he's passed along between natives, doesn't even make the attempt. One of them even (so quietly) comments that they appreciate how he's behaving. There really isn't much else to it, though. The more he listens, the more he acknowledges, despite how the questions he may have keep building. He wouldn't know where to begin. Although it's not that he isn't alarmed. One minute, his consciousness was met with the Gordian Crystal and those who have been assimilated, where he made his decision to keep living, and the next, he's waking in another world altogether. Kazuki is positive that he would otherwise be aware and familiar with his surroundings.

That similar state of mind sticks with him once he's let out. He's looking here and there as he takes his time walking through town, every now and again peeking into windows and in general feeling curious, right along with everything else. While it's probably obvious that he's a newcomer, considering the jumpsuit, he might also stand out with how he seems to be so calm, otherwise. Granted, he probably should get in out of the rain soon.]

[ Eventually Kazuki finds his way to his given house. It seems rather nice, he thinks, making his way through the rooms and taking note of where things are. Upon coming across anyone else, he types up a greeting. ]

[While he did take part in the fishing, Kazuki has more so been one to help prepare them for consumption. With deft hands and even being a bit methodical about it, one might be able to tell that he's no stranger to cooking, and especially not with fish. He even seems pleased while doing so, as if it helps him to not think for a moment about the current circumstances (and more so, the ones he's left behind at home).]

[ this whole thing reminds her of a high school cafeteria, minus the endless and overpowering chatter. row upon row of tables stretch across the room, nearly all seemingly filled to capacity. most people seeming, at least to her eyes, to know one another, or at least be comfortable with one another.

playing the new girl isn't a role she's been forced into very often, having grown up in the kind of small town where everybody knows everything about everyone, nor is it one she particularly enjoys, self-consciousness kicking in in a way it hasn't since before she and her family left bethel. before her entire life was upended.

approaching a nearby table, one of the few that appears to have room still available, she offers a brilliant smile to whoever happens to be sitting on the end, no trace of nerves visible, at least for the time being. balancing her tray with one hand, she uses the other to dash off a quick message: ]

[ she isn't paying enough attention, too busy focusing on not getting lost to see what's right in front of her until she happens to get too close. the thick swirl of red dust comes on fast and strong, a whirlwhind that nearly knocks her off her feet, clings to her jumpsuit and sticks to her tongue and the roof of her mouth. without meaning to she starts to gag, has to clamp one hand over her mouth to keep from coughing too loudly, and even then it takes several tries before kate's able to swallow past the dust coating her throat.

[ Elena hasn't been around this many people in a while, and certainly not since becoming a vampire. She'd avoided most of the larger gatherings on the Nest's mission, but here... that's not really an option. Not when she's trying to blend in and not give away her secret. So she sits at one of the emptier tables, a plate of food in front of her that she feels guilty about, and she's just taken a bite of bread when the young woman approaches with that message.

She nearly chokes on that bread.

Kate. The girl Seth had cared about, the one he'd sometimes compared Elena to. For someone she's never met, Elena feels as if she knows her, those residual emotions from her broodmate rising to the surface so that she can't help but smile and nod. ]

After sunset the temperature had started to drop and the rain just made the damp air colder. Red powder-dust like spilled paprika scattered across the ground swirled around his feet as he made a conscious effort to walk silently, the rain water soaking into his hair and shoulders as he followed a few feet behind one of the locals. He's learnt the natives' hand sign for 'fish' which... in hindsight wasn't all that useful, but that was a starting point. After all it unravelled the mystery of where he was being taken. Night fishing. It was a new experience for him, but then. So was most of this village. He hadn't been anywhere resembling a village since-... Let's not go there Angel. The lone wolf sat by himself under a tree, an old rod sitting between his two hands, half-listening to the muffled distant noises of people gathering and eating in the town hall cutting through the rain, but mostly just staring blankly out over the water. There was a bite on the end of his line but he didn't seem to notice.

Angel wasn't sure what to expect when he was being dragged out onto the sheltered porch to witness the little Sound Eater. A humanoid Sound Eater? Sound Eaterling? He wasn't scared of this thing when he first laid eyes on it and since it wasn't devouring everyone in the village he didn't risk rushing out and bursting into flames to try and tackle it to take it down. In fact it looked... blind and fairly benign, as far as demons and mystical beings went. "Heh. No mouth. Like Hello Kitty," he breathed-whispered. Okay, clearly that observation was funny only to Angel. He disappeared back inside to grab a piece of charcoal and some paper after a while, and he spent most of that morning sitting on the porch, staying in the shade sketching it in silence.

[Faith sees Angel there off by himself. His broad shoulders and standard broody posture are hard to miss. So she makes her way over to him with her own rod and gathered up fishing supplies. She's been fishing off and on throughout the day with limited success. She's not much of a fisher woman, after all. Maybe spearfishing she'd be good at, but the waiting game is killer.

She's just about to join him when she see's the line bob. With the rain they are free to talk, so she points and speaks but at a slightly more lowered tone.] You've got a bite!

[ For the longest time after being shown to the house, Jesse has remained hidden in the bedroom that's apparently his. Pacing the room, anxiously chewing his fingernails with wide and frantic eyes, sometimes sitting on the bed and jiggling his leg with unconscious anxiety, he doesn't know what to do with himself. He's convinced that maybe he's finally lost his mind. He must be having some kind of stressed out psychotic break. Right? Right? Except the longer time passes, despair sinks in deeper and deeper that all of this is terrifyingly real.

Eventually, desperately needing to empty his bladder, Jesse emerges from his bedroom. Uses the bathroom, jumping loudly at any noise he doesn't mean to make. And then he's exiting the bathroom and slowly, cautiously… creeping with slow wariness through the house, exploring it. Eyes wide, guarded, wildly alert, heart in his throat, a cold and nervous sweat prickling his skin.

The sudden sound of someone or something behind him has him whipping around in a panic, his fists snapping into a defensive pose ready to punch the living shit out of whatever it is… which might look funny because, just look at this super skinny junkie twink. ]

[ Jesse should eat. But how the fuck can he eat with his stomach in nervous knots, making him feel like he's going to puke? His hands stink of fish, the whole ordeal of fishing a bewilderingly terrifying one, Jesse jumping at every sudden movement, his skin crawling with the anticipation of being ambushed by whatever the fuck has everyone so freaked out.

And now here he is, seated at a table, a plate of food in front of him that he's barely touched. Leg jiggling anxiously, he fidgets with his fork while eyeing the people around him. Jesse is the kind of guy who can never keep still at the best times, a chronic fidgeter, full of restless energy. It's even more pronounced when he's vibrating with nervousness. Have you ever seen a man almost jump out of his skin from simply dropping a piece of cutlery? Because that's what happens: Mid-twiddling of the fork between his slightly trembling fingers, it clumsily slips free and lands with a clatter to his plate, and if Jesse were in a cartoon, he would have Wile. E. Coyote-style leaped through the roof in startled fright. ]

[ OPTION A - RESCUE JESSE:
So, this is what has everyone freaked out. Jesse stares, and he swallows so hard that he wonders if his gulp is audible. His breath feels caught in his throat, his pulse racing in his neck, thump-thump-thump. That thing looks like… Jesus, the way it looks like a child hits an unnameable dread inside him. At the same time, the macabre appearance of it is enough to send a chill racing down his spine. The way the thing roams around, it has Jesse slowly, slowly backing way, silent as possible, and he finds himself backed up against a wall. And to his horror, the thing is beginning to roam in his direction. He flattens himself against the wall, wanting to run but too afraid to make a noise, and as a bizarre red dust begins to whip up around him the closer the thing roams towards him, Jesse flinches while his eyes instinctively squint and shut against it. And then he inhales a mouthful of it, and he gags, and claps his hand against his mouth to try and stifle it. The thing is roaming closer. The red dust is whipping up wilder and fiercer. He can't breathe. He's biting back a shriek that wants to choke out of him. Someone fucking help before he winds up involuntarily coughing and gasping like mad. ]

OPTION B - JESSE RESCUING YOU:
[ Jesse sees the person caught in the dervish of red dust swirling viciously around them. He sees the way they're blinded, stumbling around, falling over from disorientation and from the fierceness of the dust storm. A part of Jesse wants to stay right the hell back, keep as far away, no way does he want to die. But he can't just stand here and do nothing; he just can't. And so, as much as his feet want to send him spinning around on the spot and legging it to safety, he steels himself and forces himself forward. Charges as quietly but quickly as he can, trying to shield his eyes from the increasing gust of dust, tries to hold his breath, tries to make a beeline straight for the person. He gropes around blindly with his eyes shut, lungs feeling like they're going to burst, and it's only a couple of seconds of groping blindly around but it feels like an eternity.

Until his fingers latch on an arm, a shoulder, grabbing a handful of the person's jumpsuit on their back. And with strength amped up from adrenalin, Jesse is dragging the person with all his staggering, frantic might, dragging them backwards, his fingers biting into their arm while his other arm is trying to anchor purchase underneath their armpit. Dragging them back from the dust storm until they're finally clear of it, disappearing into the shadows of a small alcove, Jesse dumping their ass on the ground while collapsing back against the wall himself in a stifled gasp that tastes of dust and terror. ]

[Mako is wandering the house too, trying to get her bearings. She's still not sure how she feels about this—living with so many other people, complete strangers. It was different in the Shatterdome. Those people were other officers and rangers. Coworkers. This feels like some sort of forced intimacy that she's not sure she's used to or ready for.

One of her housemates looks more unsettled by this entire thing than she is, creeping around the house like he's expecting someone to attack him. Mako isn't vocal in most situations, but she doesn't think she's sneaking up on him regardless. Apparently the man disagrees, because he whips around like he's ready to hit her. Mako doesn't flinch or tense, or react much at all. The vast majority of her ranger training was about control, and she's clinging to that training now more than ever. Besides, she's used to panicked, over-the-top reactions. There were enough traumatized people in the Shatterdomes for it to be a not uncommon occurrence, especially towards the end. She just shakes her head, voice quiet.]

Put A Sock In It

[ He had taken a dark blue jumpsuit from the natives. Yusuke would agree to their terms of staying quiet. It should be a simple enough rule to follow. There could be places that he could actually speak when able. The device is familiar to him almost as if it were a cellphone. He leaves the Reset Room shortly after having everything he needed and goes outside. The sight before him isn't exactly beautiful, but in a way there was it's own beauty within it. The sand paths were actual sand, he had seem spectacle about the entirety of the situation. He didn't believe it were possible but even the Metaverse and Mementos were hard to get into at first.

The scenery in front of him could be painted on a canvas someday. For now he lifts his phone up to take a photo to keep it in memory of what he had first seen stepping out of the room. His lips pull into a frown as he realizes that it could be some time before he could actually paint but he'll at least have plenty of time to figure out what would be his first piece in this world.

When someone passes by him, he'll try to get their attention and have a message for them. ]

Revery Alone

[ Fishing? The community seemed to want to band together for resources. Yusuke wouldn't know the first thing about fishing. He would want to help them in some way but also didn't want to get in their way of not being able to provide help right away. The rain seemed to not deter people and he had caught from some of the natives it's because the Sound Eaters get confused by the sounds. Yusuke looks thoughtful while glancing down towards the table in the greenhouse where those that had been fishing would be putting their fish. There seems to be quite a bit now and he started to wash down the fish that had been provided. He would move them into to the next spot so that they could get cooked.

During one of his passes to move the fish, he hadn't seen a nearby bucket and trips over it. Yusuke sort of falls forward, but he puts his hand on the table nearby and the fish in his other hand goes flying towards the nearest person. Sorry for the flying fish coming at whoever was nearby him. He doesn't seem to notice it happened though. ]

Invictus

[ Yusuke heard all kinds of commotion coming from the fountain. He got a few supplies from Aiden, who was helpful to provide something that he would cherish. Not only that but it wouldn't go to waste either. A few pencils and sketchbook. The artist within him could actually come out when he deemed necessary. After people watching from afar he would cautiously make his way to the fountain to see what everything had been about. Upon seeing what seemed to be a human, was in fact not human at all. Those that had gotten closer to it, the red dust would surround the being. Yusuke would try to find an area that would be in somewhat cover as he opens the sketchbook to the very first page and readies his pencil. He's looking at the creature as he slowly begins to draw in short strokes against the paper. There's a small lift of his head every couple of seconds as he continues. Taking a photo or recording would be better but at the same time he didn't want to miss this opportunity of capturing life.

The creature would probably become violent but for now it stayed at the fountain gathering attention. Yusuke wondered if that was it's intention. To have the natives, the people of the community and new arrivals to feast their eyes on something that they can't get close without hurting themselves. The creepiest thing would happen and he would lock eyes with the child during the times he was glancing up from the sketchbook. A cold chill shook throughout his body but he wouldn't stop in his sketch. There was beauty and vice all in one within what he had been seeing. ]

[ Well, there's no point typing a message like that to this guy - the guy who is immediately freezing in place for a split second. Honestly, Akira's heart practically jolts as soon as he sees the face...

... After the couple of seconds, he's signing, device in hand. It's short and sweet, but signing out his friend's name would take longer than-- ]

[ He's thankful for it translating, because he's not sure typing would go super well for him this very moment.

... Yusuke is incredibly observant; Akira knows the conflict, fear, relief, worry, and... even a tiny bit of... anger... are probably crystal-fucking-clear. And that really sucks, because he doesn't like the idea of sending so many mixed signals to Yusuke, of all people, right off the bat.

Calm... for now. Just long enough to reel it all in. Just long enough to wrap his head around having someone else he knows, directly from home, trapped here with him.

His hands move a little slower than they normally would. Akira won't say he's happy to see him, because that would be at least halfway into a lie. He won't say he's sorry Yusuke's here, either, because... of that very same reason. ]

[Richie slowly opens the door into his new home with a bag over his shoulder. This place looks pretty cool—it's not a shack or a closet or anything. He's forgotten which room is his, but that's what roommates are for.

Ever-so-luckily for them, he wants those answers now. He can be found knocking on people's doors and just exploring the place, trying to figure out what his living situation is going to be.]

[Oh, hey, it's raining. Richie has been tasked with transporting the freshly-caught fish to the greenhouse. He is not happy about it.

They stink. They stink bad. They're making him stink bad. Thankfully, the smell is diluted in the rain, but that doesn't mean he can't smell it on himself. Gross.

He can be found walking with a scowl back and forth to and from the greenhouse, often holding a wrap of fish up to his chest while he carries the large load to his destination.

Arrival.

[This was not where she was supposed to have ended up. The portal on the moon was supposed to send her back home not to some place where she couldn't even talk. Her eyes were wide, and her arms were tight across her chest. Alex Reagan's face was easy to read in the best of circumstances, and right now, she didn't trust this and she was frightened and above all, she wanted to go home.

Even though, she definitely understood what was being said to her, Alex was Alex and she spent her last several years on the radio. So she couldn't not talk.]

You can't be serious. I need to get home.

[Despite generalized appearances, Alex actually has experience fishing with her father and her grandfather. So when they're told they're going to be fishing, Alex volunteered to help. She isn't squeamish about actually handling the fish, but there's what's becoming a semi-permanent mark from her teeth on her lower lip. This not talking thing is already getting old, but Alex is trying. More than that, she's keeping an eye out for anyone who'd like to communicate with her. It's only polite after all.]

[Alex hasn't seen the sound eaters yet, so she's taken back when she's walking across the center of the community and sees what she thinks to be a demon. Demons are writ large back home in Alex's world, and this looks to be a perfect specimen of one from a Black Tape that she's seen. Alex pales, and she needs to clamp her hand over her mouth for a moment, her eyes going so wide that white can be seen the whole way 'round.

But it's for a minute, because Alex is a reporter, and if she's going to have her own Black Tape (spoilers, she already does) then she's going to record it. So, she pulls out her device and starts recording it, still pale and shivering as she waits to see what it might do. There is an unspoken question on her face when she catches the eye of other people. Is this new? How bad is this?]

House 12.

[Despite being told that the house is soundproof, Alex is still trying to be quiet inside her newly assigned house. She'd lived with housemates before in college of course, but it wasn't something that she'd done any time lately. Even Amalia's staying with her had been well over a year ago now. Of course on the moon, she'd lived in a dorm but somehow that was easier than this because it was always so loud with just people living their lives.

Here the silence felt smothering. More so now that she couldn't sleep after seeing whatever the hell that was earlier. At home she would be drinking coffee and scrolling through the internet, so here she's kind of doing that, sitting at the kitchen table. Every so often, Alex just lets out a soft sigh before she adds in her radio-ready canadian accented voice:]

Pretty sure I might just murder someone for starbucks right now.

( klaus has little reason to personally care about the food supply considering he does not need to it live. indirectly, however, it would be something of an issue if his own meals of choice started dropping like flies from starvation. and there are perhaps some people he wouldn't mind and might even care to keep alive.

klaus takes out a sharp blade courtesy of the metal shop and sits beside the stream with a long wooden branch as everyone gets to work. he takes his time, whittling and fashioning the weapon to a deadly point. the activity reminds him not-so fondly of his childhood, of mikael, but even the haunting memory of his father and his spears does not drown out the memory of elijah. a much more patient teacher, his brother.

eventually he is satisfied and then wastes no time, picking a quiet place on the bank to stand and wait. he strikes sure and quick, impaling fish after fish with ease. )

HOUSE #10 (open to housemates and anyone passing by!)

( klaus is fond of the porch outside his bedroom. he did not particularly pick his room for any other reason than sheer convenience and exhaustion after battle at the time, but he appreciates its proximity to natural light nonetheless. much easier to paint, this way.

restless is certainly one word to describe him at the moment. yet art has always been a focusing influence to his inescapable thoughts, and so he takes to canvas with charcoal and paints he has made himself from flowers and berries in the woods. his palette is limited, but he attempts to make due, slowly crafting a scene of swirling, chaotic red dust. )

Revelry Alone

[Maria had arrived some weeks ago. Since then, she's spent her time at her assigned task and with others, whatever she could do. Aiding in the community swiftly felt like a duty to fulfill. She had also taken to the locals, their plight to keep surviving without turning their backs on new arrivals. When they became nervous of food shortage, Maria was there to help.

She's taken a net along to the bank, which many of the others did not wish to us. The splashing of water, of fish emerging still alive, could draw sound eaters. Maria doesn't mind this threat, and it seemed neither did the man she found spear killing them with efficiency.

It's an ideal place to set up, not far from him. He would strike the water and any fish he did not pierce would be scared towards Maria's net, making it easy to trap one or more. She herself was waded out in the water, wearing her boots, trousers, vest, and undershirt without bother to being so waterlogged in so many layers. From a local she had a small, razor sharp knife that she used to kill the fish while in the net, before untangling it and placing it in a basket she tied off and left bobbing in the water. It's a good system, perhaps risky, but quicker than sitting and waiting for fish to tug a line.]
