MOD LOG #1

MOD LOG #1

Packing Up
Content Warnings: General tension
Themes: Survival, exploration, heavy-lifting

At the end of the month, the natives send out a mass message informing everyone of the upcoming trip to 'meet' the Sound Eaters. Preparing for the trip is simple, though labor intensive, and begins with making certain that everyone packs food, water, clothes, gear, and a twenty-pound package of sand. When it's time for the journey to begin, those tasked with watching the sandpaths, will lead the party on the journey towards the Eiffel Tower. It's a slow trip, a careful one. Natives will take breaks every few hours and when the sun sets, help everyone to set up their bed rolls around a few lanterns. The natives will unveil the star mapping feature, with constellations named and general history attached, on the devices. They will encourage those to tell stories, get out food and water, and 'talk' amongst the group before everyone settles into sleep. Out, under the night sky, the silence is more noticeable - there are no crickets or frogs. This process will repeat for two days until the group reaches the end of their destination at midday.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Disorientation, confusion, character and native death, Sound Eater birth and death, body horror
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, death

On the third day, characters will finally reach the Eiffel Tower, where the Sound Eaters in this area of France have set up their 'home'. Stopping far enough out to allow for communication, the natives will gesture to the ruins of the structure that appears to be altered. Structures are built up and around the metal frame, closing off different sections with a dark material that glints an oily-green in the light. After explaining that the Sound Eaters are influenced by the weather, rain being an issue for them, they'll take everyone closer. Silence is key here. The natives are visibly wary, tense, and uncomfortable but they believe that showing the arrivals what they're so afraid of will inspire them to be more cautious.

Now, as close to the Sound Eaters as they dare to go (less than a half mile), the natives will have everyone crouch down behind various cars and debris. The devices will say only one word, watch. As the sun begins to set and clouds darken overhead, the tower will open up, the Sound Eaters spilling out. They are split up, as the natives refer to it, into classes - the young, the shifting and the matured. The young are extremely sensitive to sound, volatile and aggressive, humanesque in form with features in various state of change. The shifting are grotesque, splitting and reforming, changing from young to matured in a shift that is punctuated by pained screams and the breaking of bones, splitting of flesh. The matured are in control. They command and guide their kind into a circle, where they all bend down, kneeling as something different than the rest comes out of the tower to stand at the center. The wind catches, dusting up red ash from it and blowing the ash towards the group - there's no way to move and it tastes familiar, coats your skin in red. They all grow quiet and a wrapped form, in the shape of a body, is placed at the Sound Eaters' feet. It crumbles, breaks apart and sprays out over the wrapped figured to completely cover it.

The shards of the Sound Eater bubble up and fuse together, creating a shell. Rain begins to fall. Light, but enough to cause the Sound Eaters to begin to move, pushing against one another but not leaving the circle. There's a shrill sound, an offbeat whistle, air escaping a tight space, a desperate inhale, and then the shell at the center splits apart. A Sound Eater died to create a new life. Smaller than the other young, the 'child' climbs up and out, but it's not the same as the others. It's form is generally human. Dark hair, androgynous features. No eyes. No mouth. Standing, it angles its head towards the matured and they move, as if on command, and surround it as it walks into the tower.

( If anyone makes noise at this point, in any way, the coming bad weather and what just occurred, will result in the Sound Eaters only attacking that person - rather than the whole group. They'll drag that person into the tower and out of sight. The character will be reset. )

The natives are upset. Spooked. They've never seen anything like that and they're quick to tell everyone this, followed by a hasty message to leave. As they're moving, the rain begins to beat down and the ground grows slippery. Making it back to the supplies is troublesome and just as the group gets close, one of the natives slips and tumbles down broken concrete, twisting and smacking against the hard surface until they come to a stop at the bottom. Anyone that goes to help will find that the native has hurt themselves and there's nothing that can be done, despite best efforts. The natives will take the time to wrap their friend up, relaying that the Sound Eaters don't attack now that the rain is heavy, and will begin the slow trek back to the community. They'll camp each night, the same as the trip up, but with an uncomfortable tension that no amount of story telling can break.

It's Raining Me- Rain. It's Just Water.
Content Warnings: None
Themes: Survival, fun, noise-making

After everyone is back in Reims, the natives will split off to bury their dead - they will not allow anyone to accompany them. Everyone is encouraged to head back to the community to get a break from the bad weather and to unload their supplies. The following day, the natives can be heard outside. Splashing and making noise, fixing houses, and what might have been a somber event will quickly turn into something a little more upbeat as rain beats down on the city. Children will play and occasionally laugh, stunted in their ability to enjoy themselves but willing to learn from the arrivals. Bigger items will be moved and natives will encourage everyone to do the 'noisier' things that they need to do. When the rain ends, work will resume as usual and soundproofing will be a lot more difficult - the water washed away sandpaths and damaged some areas. Cleaning up will take time but the natives aren't as unhappy with the situation as they just had a moment's respite from the normal tension of their everyday lives.

[Her frown continues. Had he... were there gaps? It kind of hurt think about for too long.] If she's such a decent person, I doubt she'd be all hunky dory with you wiping my brains. Kind of a very not decent thing to do.

[ It's an angle he hadn't really considered. One that troubles him immensely, if the furrow in his brow is any indication.

Again, he thinks of rakghouls and of their plague carrying bite; he'd never seen one up close but had heard enough of the stories and rumors. Enough to have him drawing worrying comparisons. ]

Or the villagers, themselves. [ It's a guess but an educated one. They had lost another on the journey back, he remembers. Had not been able to keep track of the body once they'd returned to town. ]

[9S' first reaction to being given orders from A2 is a sour look, evident even with the visor concealing his eyes. His second is when 2B asks to join, and he turns to her, worry bubbling up in his reactivated vocals.]

Wait, 2B! It's too dangerous, you can't...

[They were just reunited? The idea of her dying here... No. No, no no.]

We can't be sure the reset room will even work on us androids. They said it doesn't even consistently work on the humans.

[He gives A2 another look, aggravated at her for bringing it up, but also not about to squander an opportunity he'd been looking for.] Let's at least confirm A2's revival before we do anything. I don't know how much data I can get if they're going to slaughter her as fast as the natives say they are, but I can try.

[So, he'll just throw her to the wolves. It was her idea anyway.]

Seeing 2B without her visor on is strange. Suddenly, she doesn't seem so cold, her eyes a soft, misty blue. He was so used to that barrier between them, that he doesn't even know how to read her like this. She seems conflicted though, about what, he wonders?

Ah. He doesn't know what else to say.

I'm glad to see you here... It wouldn't be the same working without you. We make a good team!

[ Miach has skipped on the camping excursion like a true delinquent, and instead lingered by the reset room every once in a while, curious to see just how dangerous and lethal whatever the natives planned really turned out to be.

She's out in the rain without any particular protection from the wetness when she hears the very non-organic fall and heads over curiously. ]

It gives a rough start, doesn't it?

[ She doesn't offer a hand or anything, she's just here to comment apparently. ]

[ For someone who lazily stayed in Reims, this group message update is absolutely heavensent. ]

Well, now we have proof that they can't be trusted. And why would they be trustworthy for us? We're strangers to them, nothing meaningful. Can't blame them.

Did they all look the same or did they have distinctive features?

[ Miach has never been pranked before. It's not something she put much mind to, but the realization hits her as she reaches up to dry her eyes with her sleeve, just having fallen victim to an indoor water attack.

Factually, it didn't really do much because she had been soaked from the rain before, but it somehow still manages to be irritating. And yet she smiles. ]

Nice try, but there's not much damage you can do that hasn't already been done by nature.

[ An 18 year old girl has found her place among the children, listening intently alongside them. Better by your hand, before the darkness can. Now that's some lyrics she can get behind. In her world, nobody would sing such morbid songs, so there is something that she finds relaxing about simply listening for a bit.

When Lorem is done, she speaks up. ]

That's a very fitting song for this world.

[Of course 9S was going to answer his summons; Ignis was a human, and he was infinitely curious.

What he wasn't expecting was to have a plate shoved into his hands. Food wasn't necessary for an android to survive, and it wasn't a resource to be spent frivolously here. Even if he really wants to try some. It smells sooo good!

9S looks absolutely torn.]

Er... Are you positive, Sir? Food would probably be better spent on someone who needs it.

[ After their run-in at the introduction, Miach has always been curious about Lu Li so when she is making such a ruckus, it is hard to not feel tempted to approach her. For a moment, Miach just watches, waiting to see if she's being noticed. Then she speaks up. ]

How was the trip? Any fun?

[9S isn't wrong, and A2 doesn't even care that he's throwing her to the literal wolves in this case. It is her idea. It's her job as the older one to at least do something to help these idiot younger models out. Even if that means she'll die.

She's not afraid of it, honestly. And for once, she agrees with 9S.
]

9S is right. There's no point in sending two combat units in when one should give the necessary data. Besides, someone still needs to protect them on the way back.

[And if she doesn't make it out... Well, she doesn't make it out. It'll definitely put the reset room to the test. To 9S:]

At the very least just see how they attack.

[It's fine. A2 wasn't planning on getting up soon anyway, and she's certainly not going to be getting up in front of a human. How embarrassing that she, a state of the art (if slightly older) combat model fell onto her ass.

It fucking sucks, honestly.
]

Something like that.

[She'd like for her systems to stabilize! That'd be great, thanks!]

[ Yesterday was for hiding that she was people-watching. Person-watching, really, and he's not a person, he's a homunculus fuelled by the liquified ashes of all the books burned in Fahrenheit 451 with the words 50 Shades in the title, so it was his victims she was keeping an eye on. All he seemed to want them to do was tedious manual labour on his fresh-to-death evil lair, worth knowing but not intervening. Yet. She may touch base with those people later.

She saw them all milling about later on... she's mostly sure. Drank. Faith continues to be a free agent -- Jess makes certain every day now, once at the start and once at the end. Kilgrave himself falls somewhat out of focus while she keeps an eye on the people who are or have been around him but she can still feel him coming from a mile away, like a violent stomach bug or the results of the 2016 election. When he sits down, she has a casual scooch to end of the bench, reinserting some distance, and sips her whiskey. ]

[A multi-day trip was such a pain. He supposes he can't complain about it, though, considering he forced his students to go through a camping trip much more dangerous. He was capable of doing it, so he'd just shoulder his sandbag and keep going. The things he packed were excessively light, so he could shoulder more if he had to. That did feel a little silly, once he realized the sheer degree of superhuman strength that had been assembled in this world.]

[Like the combat robot offering him a bed roll. How dutiful. He makes a small, dismissive gesture, then pulls out his device to clarify.]

I won't be sleeping tonight anyways. Someone else should use it.

[Well, if it's for him, he might as well take it. He's not too proud to accept help and he is rather thirsty. Besides, this woman seems rather insistent that he take it, and who is he to say no.

It takes a moment for Ignis to reply, as he hasn't fully gotten the hang of sign language unlike cheating androids who can upload the information directly into their heads, but he knows enough to sign a thank you back to her, momentarily putting the bottle on the ground so that he has free use of his hands.]

[The strange artificial lifeform that accompanied them on their trip left 9S uneasy, and he kept his eyes on it during the trip. Humanoid in form, but mechanical and unambiguously nonhuman. With his visor malfunctioning he couldn't place exactly what it was. It didn't resemble any of the machine lifeforms back on his Earth, and he never once considered something like that could be an android.

9S approaches the strange lifeform when it stops to adjusts its load. He signs one simple phrase to it.]

[She moves away from him. He takes note of that and it's a good note, because it means that some part of her is still afraid of him. Kilgrave has never been put off by Jessica's unwillingness to talk. He didn't come out here in the rain to be ignored.

So he scoots a little closer – not by much, just a couple of inches, perhaps enough to make her feel slightly less at ease.]

I know you. You've been plotting behind my back, haven't you? You're one drink away from another violent outburst. It has to stop.

[It sounds like a genuine plea, his eyes fixed on hers. Much as he wants revenge, and he does, oh so much, he knows he doesn't have the freedom to pursue it in the same way he would back home. They're playing a long game here and Jessica's the only one in this place he truly has the measure of.]

Dejarik is a game of strategy. [His tone doesn't change from the one he's been using to instruct the children. It lacks the harsh edge of command and fervor so commonly present in his addresses, softened on the edges both out of necessity and exhaustion.

His black clothes suit him better than the garish yellow jumpsuit, even as they cling damply to his skin. He doesn't even raise to his feet as she approaches, from the overturned bucket he had taken a seat on while instructing the newest batch of players to the 'game' table. It's rudimentary at best, but the concepts are there. The version the children are learning is watered down, but the essential base is there and he can build on it later.]

Good practice for young minds. [He could cut the conversation there. There is no reason he has to do more than try to ignore or tolerate her presence on this planet. But the living area is small, and the weekly town meetings ensure he can't ever truly escape running into her. He is a man of politics and strategy, and she is a potential ally here. No matter how begrudgingly they would have to work together now and then.]

Do you play?
