MOD LOG #1

Packing Up
Content Warnings: General tension
Themes: Survival, exploration, heavy-lifting

At the end of the month, the natives send out a mass message informing everyone of the upcoming trip to 'meet' the Sound Eaters. Preparing for the trip is simple, though labor intensive, and begins with making certain that everyone packs food, water, clothes, gear, and a twenty-pound package of sand. When it's time for the journey to begin, those tasked with watching the sandpaths, will lead the party on the journey towards the Eiffel Tower. It's a slow trip, a careful one. Natives will take breaks every few hours and when the sun sets, help everyone to set up their bed rolls around a few lanterns. The natives will unveil the star mapping feature, with constellations named and general history attached, on the devices. They will encourage those to tell stories, get out food and water, and 'talk' amongst the group before everyone settles into sleep. Out, under the night sky, the silence is more noticeable - there are no crickets or frogs. This process will repeat for two days until the group reaches the end of their destination at midday.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Disorientation, confusion, character and native death, Sound Eater birth and death, body horror
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, death

On the third day, characters will finally reach the Eiffel Tower, where the Sound Eaters in this area of France have set up their 'home'. Stopping far enough out to allow for communication, the natives will gesture to the ruins of the structure that appears to be altered. Structures are built up and around the metal frame, closing off different sections with a dark material that glints an oily-green in the light. After explaining that the Sound Eaters are influenced by the weather, rain being an issue for them, they'll take everyone closer. Silence is key here. The natives are visibly wary, tense, and uncomfortable but they believe that showing the arrivals what they're so afraid of will inspire them to be more cautious.

Now, as close to the Sound Eaters as they dare to go (less than a half mile), the natives will have everyone crouch down behind various cars and debris. The devices will say only one word, watch. As the sun begins to set and clouds darken overhead, the tower will open up, the Sound Eaters spilling out. They are split up, as the natives refer to it, into classes - the young, the shifting and the matured. The young are extremely sensitive to sound, volatile and aggressive, humanesque in form with features in various state of change. The shifting are grotesque, splitting and reforming, changing from young to matured in a shift that is punctuated by pained screams and the breaking of bones, splitting of flesh. The matured are in control. They command and guide their kind into a circle, where they all bend down, kneeling as something different than the rest comes out of the tower to stand at the center. The wind catches, dusting up red ash from it and blowing the ash towards the group - there's no way to move and it tastes familiar, coats your skin in red. They all grow quiet and a wrapped form, in the shape of a body, is placed at the Sound Eaters' feet. It crumbles, breaks apart and sprays out over the wrapped figured to completely cover it.

The shards of the Sound Eater bubble up and fuse together, creating a shell. Rain begins to fall. Light, but enough to cause the Sound Eaters to begin to move, pushing against one another but not leaving the circle. There's a shrill sound, an offbeat whistle, air escaping a tight space, a desperate inhale, and then the shell at the center splits apart. A Sound Eater died to create a new life. Smaller than the other young, the 'child' climbs up and out, but it's not the same as the others. It's form is generally human. Dark hair, androgynous features. No eyes. No mouth. Standing, it angles its head towards the matured and they move, as if on command, and surround it as it walks into the tower.

( If anyone makes noise at this point, in any way, the coming bad weather and what just occurred, will result in the Sound Eaters only attacking that person - rather than the whole group. They'll drag that person into the tower and out of sight. The character will be reset. )

The natives are upset. Spooked. They've never seen anything like that and they're quick to tell everyone this, followed by a hasty message to leave. As they're moving, the rain begins to beat down and the ground grows slippery. Making it back to the supplies is troublesome and just as the group gets close, one of the natives slips and tumbles down broken concrete, twisting and smacking against the hard surface until they come to a stop at the bottom. Anyone that goes to help will find that the native has hurt themselves and there's nothing that can be done, despite best efforts. The natives will take the time to wrap their friend up, relaying that the Sound Eaters don't attack now that the rain is heavy, and will begin the slow trek back to the community. They'll camp each night, the same as the trip up, but with an uncomfortable tension that no amount of story telling can break.

It's Raining Me- Rain. It's Just Water.
Content Warnings: None
Themes: Survival, fun, noise-making

After everyone is back in Reims, the natives will split off to bury their dead - they will not allow anyone to accompany them. Everyone is encouraged to head back to the community to get a break from the bad weather and to unload their supplies. The following day, the natives can be heard outside. Splashing and making noise, fixing houses, and what might have been a somber event will quickly turn into something a little more upbeat as rain beats down on the city. Children will play and occasionally laugh, stunted in their ability to enjoy themselves but willing to learn from the arrivals. Bigger items will be moved and natives will encourage everyone to do the 'noisier' things that they need to do. When the rain ends, work will resume as usual and soundproofing will be a lot more difficult - the water washed away sandpaths and damaged some areas. Cleaning up will take time but the natives aren't as unhappy with the situation as they just had a moment's respite from the normal tension of their everyday lives.

[In the scuffle of people, Eleven manages to lose track of both Frank and Mike. She's done such a good job of keeping an eye on them that she almost panics, but given that Frank is tall he's easy for her to spot in the crowd and make her way over to him. She crouches when he signals for her to do so and stays pressed to his side, but leans out from around him to try and peer out and get a better look at what's going on. She came all this way to see for herself, and she's not about to let her small stature get in the way of obtaining information.

But she's really not prepared for what she sees, particularly when the shifting Sound Eaters emerge. The sight of them reminds Eleven a little too much of the monsters from the Upside Down, and thoughts of fighting demogorgons fill her mind. Her eyes go wide and her jaw drops open. No, they shouldn't be here. It's not safe, not good. Panic fills her, but she can't keep her eyes off of what's happening in front of them.

Should she step forward and try to find a gate to seal? Would that send the monsters away? She doesn't know what to do, and that not knowing combined with the fact that she's completely unsettled have her trembling like crazy. It doesn't help that she's experiencing some sensory overload at the moment, static and dissonance caused by the Sound Eaters making her mind go haywire. When the world around her goes dark, it takes a second for her to realize it's Frank's hands over her eyes. He can feel that there's tears on her face and that bothers her, since looking weak to him feels like a bad thing. Instead of standing there like that she turns, pressing her face up against his side and wrapping her arms around him completely like he's an anchor that's going to keep her silent and safe.

The reality is, she could likely destroy most everything standing here with enough effort. But she's terrified, afraid of the thought that she might have caused this by opening and closing gates in Hawkins. What if she reached too far and opened a gate that made the Sound Eaters able to cross over?

When the noise of any others around them being taken by the Sound Eaters reaches her, she tries to cover her ears with one hand while scaling up him with the other. It's an awkward scramble that results in his being able to see the extent of her panic.

[ when eleven finds him again, he couldn't be more relieved, immediately feeling better having her anchored at his side. he wishes she didn't have to see this, he tries to cover her eyes but he knows she wants to see -- needs to, even. a heavy hand brackets over her slim shoulders, tugging her against him so she can cry without worrying about the others. he knows she's powerful, perhaps more powerful than he understands, but she's still just a little girl. she deserves to be protected and loved like any other.

that look on her face breaks his damn heart and finally he can't take it anymore. he crouches down, uncaring who sees them or what's happening around them. frank's face presses against hers, forehead-to-forehead and he rubs her back in an effort to get her to calm down. though he can't say the words, he thinks maybe she hears them anyway he's thinking them so loudly. shhh, it's okay. you're safe. i love you. all the things he'll never get to say to his kids again, or show them; but eleven doesn't have anyone either. he can't mind being that for her when they're both alone.

it's a near thing, holding back his own tears, but whenever he feels them threaten he just holds her tighter, and thinks his mantra louder. he's going to find them a way out of this, whatever it takes. ]

[Quiet. They have to be quiet, can't make a sound. Eleven's sure the sound of her heart racing and her breathing will get them both in trouble. She tries to focus on the feeling of Frank's forehead against her own, the feeling of his breath against her and his hand rubbing her back. Those things are real, they're solid. They keep her grounded, and she slowly stops panicking.

Her arms come up and cling to him, tight enough that she goes white knuckled. This is a dangerous place, a bad place. She doesn't want to be here anymore. The trembling never stops, not even as the tears dry up. When she pulls away she takes his hand, trying to tug him away from everything.

They need to go. It's not safe.

[ he lets her cling to him for as long as she feels she needs to, just as before. he can feel her heart pound against his clothes, his own slowly steadying out until it's a bass beat below the way hers races. maybe it's all of the things they've each seen and been through separately, but he thinks it's fucked up that anyone could calm down after seeing that, especially someone so young. they stay like that for a long time, frank couldn't say how long; and he really doesn't care. nothing truly registers until she's trying to tug him away.

frank straightens up, stumbling once before getting his feet under him properly -- his legs numb from staying down. but if she wants to go, he'll go. it has to be better than passively watching this horror show. hand held in hers, he goes with her away from all the others without so much as a glance back. ]

[She clings hold of his hand like he's anchoring her to reality. If she lets go, she isn't sure how fast or far her feet might take her. Or how loud she'll be. He's the only thing keeping her cemented in the here and now, instead of slipping into some kind of dissociative state that she generally only has when she's attempting to get into the Upside Down.

She doesn't stop until they're far away from the others, completely out of sight. There's still tears brimming in her eyes, but she doesn't looked as panicked. Instead, she looks afraid. Guilty. Like she's done something wrong.

I'm the monster, she signs repeatedly. She wants him to understand that she thinks this is all her fault.

[ how upset she visibly is is breaking his heart. he also doesn't want those monsters to take her, even if she comes right back. he never wants her to have to go through that. once they're far away from the others, he gently captures her hands while they sign for the fourth or fifth time, shaking his head firmly. he meant what he said before -- none of this is her fault. it doesn't matter what either of them did before, here it's the sound eaters that are the monsters. though... after what they've just seen, frank isn't sure of anything anymore.

It's okay. You're okay, he signs, before stooping down to embrace her once again. he rubs her back and rocks her back and forth like a child much younger than she is. ]

[He's not getting it. Frustration bubbles up and it takes every ounce of her effort not to give in and scream like she wants to. She lets him hug her for a few moments before she's pushing back against him, hands angrily working in an attempt to try and get him to understand.

I opened the gate to the Upside Down. Bad things there. Like this. She gestures all around them, terrified now that she's managed to trap herself, Mike, and a bunch of innocent strangers in an alternate world that no one really knows anything about.

She grabs her device to get out the next part. He needs to understand how dangerous she is. Why he can't be close to her.

demogogron

[ ACTUALLY mike told him about this like a little while ago so he's got this o k. when she pushes away he holds up his device so it'll translate her signing. she's already well surpassed him in that department, he only knows a few words yet. in his defense none of those words are words natives routinely use with him.

he nods after a moment, glancing at the screen. the flower-teeth monster. but he's not here, and this isn't the upside down. and even if she did somehow do something, it wouldn't matter because they're here now. they're all in the same boat. he shakes his head and starts typing, equally insistent from his side of things. ]

this isn't that. even you don't have this kind of power.

[ to suck in this many people from so many different worlds? no way. and these monsters are clearly inherent to this dimension. something set off by a mistake long before she was born. ]

you'll be able to help otherwise you wouldn't be here [ though he's beginning to doubt his own usefulness now more than ever. ]

[She isn't sure that's how any of this works, and the look on her face is skeptical. But she trusts Frank completely, so she slowly nods and pockets her device. The inside of her cheek is chewed on, hard enough that she can taste copper in her mouth. It serves to help balance her, keep her focus so she doesn't get overwhelmed and frustrated.

After a second thought, her device is pulled back out so she can slowly type out:
]

Not the Upside Down?

[She doesn't think he'd know the answer to that, but even if it's not there, it could be some kind of other dimension she needs to find an open gate to get everyone back through. Maybe that's her reason for being here.]

[She reads that, and just like a switch, everything is different. Her mood seems to lift and she smiles and eagerly nods. She knows all about breaking free of bad places. She did it at the lab, she got rid of Papa, she can do this too.

She gestures at him with one hand, then herself with the other, and then joins them together at her chest. Him and her together. They'll free this place.

Turning to look back toward the tower, she seems a little more resolved about something.
Her hands ball up into fists and she starts to march back off in that direction. Yeah,
that little pep talk just encouraged the hell out of her. To fight the Sound Eaters and free everyone.

[He's lucky she cares about him, because that means she actually listens. Not yet. Thoughts of Hopper telling her "soon" whenever she asked to leave the cabin fill her mind, but she pushes those aside. Frank isn't Hopper. She's not stuck in a cabin with nowhere to go. This is different. Even if it feels the same because someone she views as a father is telling her not to do something when she really wants to do the thing.

Which means she gets sulky, because processing emotions is hard. She lets him grab and hold her arm and just stands there looking like she might actually rip his spine out with her bare hands. Her mood thankfully doesn't last long before she relents and gives him a look that says when?

[ when is he going to stop almost getting killed by superpowered ladies by notsaying the wrong thing? the world may never know. frank feels helpless yet again, looking to the backs of the people at the very edge of the crowd watching the sound eaters. there's no real answer to that. he won't lie to her and he knows she won't take the absence of an answer, so he lets go and holds up a finger. just... give him a minute. ]

we need to find out why the monsters are here
so we can pull the plug
does that make sense?

[ he holds it up and wills her to understand. they have to get to the source of their power. going after them individually is just picking off people one by one. and another one bites the dust just now. frank grimaces as yet another body dematerializes. ]

[She doesn't fully understand, but she trusts him. So she nods a little. Without warning, she moves forward to hug him. It's a tight, crushing hug. It's hard for her to put feelings and emotions into words, especially when she isn't sure that her feelings are wanted. But in such a short amount of time she's come to care about Frank, and she decides right then and there that she'll do anything to protect him.

He just wants to keep her safe. She can do the same thing for him.

Hugging him the way she is, it's easy to put her mouth in close enough to his ear so she can whisper to him. Love, she says in the tiniest little voice. Her heart aches at the thought of losing him, just the same as it does with Mike. She knows that means love, even if she's not fully sure what love is. It's a good, positive thing. And if Mike and his friends are right, it's things like love that will end up saving all of them.

[ he hugs her tight this time, with zero hesitation, picking her up off the ground a little without noticing. the word whispered in his ear has his insides melting. i love you daddy. lisa's little voice in his ear, her lips on his cheek, little arms wrapped around him just this tight in his bdus just home from assignment. frank blinks back the tears and holds on for dear life.

yes, he would do anything to protect this girl. but this place hasn't been kind to his rash behavior thus far. he's trying to act smarter, and he appreciates eleven's trust. ]
