i. soundproofing shenanigans
[ tetora was given, in exchange for his knives and other items, a task to do — soundproofing maintenance. it's an easy enough job, if tedious, but tetora hates owing people anything as much as he hates being chased, and he hates being chased a lot. so work it is — tetora sets out, door to door, and waits for residents to notice him before he gets to work.

if you find someone randomly loitering at your doorstep at some point this month? it's this guy, and he's here to protect your house from noise. ]

[ that's as much an admittance of mortality as anything. the honesty that propels the statement is rooted in a lack of foresight, in part, for what lay ahead. he doesn't expect to live, pure and simple, when things are done.

[ Not exactly an appetizing proposition there, but if Tetora was some kind of prized experiment, it wouldn't be so strange to imagine that they'd want him back. Regardless of his state of living or nonliving. ]

[ it's part of why he's glad he has a failsafe installed in him, even if he hates that it removes agency from him where he feels it truly matters. he can't die, because if he dies, they win. he can't live either, because being alive means more people will try to replicate him so they can replace him. it's a fucking lose-lose, so the only thing he can do is kill. all. of. them.

[ Majima still remembered that bizarre moment when Tetora had revealed that one of his eyes bore a tattooed marking. There were plenty of weirdos tooling around here, but that had been a new one. ]

[ Welp, looked like they weren't going to get any more work done, so while Tetora typed, Majima would retrieve a cigarette from his pocket and light up. He offered Tetora the same, and only when Tetora was done would he glance down to read the response. ]

Whatever ya do, don't let 'em toss you back in the fuckin' hole.

[ He didn't know Shinji from anyone else on the street, but it'd be hypocritical of him to try and talk Tetora down from his heartfelt desire to wipe someone off the face of God's green Earth. ]

[ tetora will toast to that, if he were the drinking type. he's going to wipe them all off the face of the fucking earth if it's the last thing he does with his petty little existence, swear on it. ]

[ Majima let out a pale wisp of smoke as he considered the message. Tetora had told him a lot about himself, as much as Majima didn't particularly care to remember much of his recent past.

Wasn't a civilian prison. Only time I actually went to one of those was to get some info outta a guy spendin' the night there.

[ ah. that's some explanation, though tetora's of a mind not to push the issue further. he's open with his personal history because he's known no other way to be; everything is painfully out in the open or it doesn't exist, or so the world goes back where he's from. it doesn't mean he expects it from everybody else. ]

did you spend too much time there?

Any time'd be too much in that pit. But I wouldn't do anything different... 'cept maybe bring more weapons.

[ Majima's expression was bitter, but there was no remorse to be found there. His only real regret was that his time there had prevented him from finding out what had happened to Taiga. ]

Anyway, it's not really like what you went through. All they wanted outta me by the end was seein' if I was gonna break. But if they caught you, they might use you to make even more kids like ya, right?

bringing more weapons is always the ideal, if not the possibility. i know i've been in spots where i'd have preferred having an extra gun or two. could've used it well.

[ there's a short lull, as tetora mulls over how to approach the question majima just asked. telling the truth is always his preference, but... ]

let's table that question for another day. this is depressing enough.

Yeah, alright.

[ This answer came easily to him; Majima didn't exactly enjoy talking about this kind of thing himself, and it sounded like it was more complicated than a simple yes or no. He gestured to Tetora instead. ]

I'm gonna clean up. Mind handin' me your plate?

[ tetora has half a mind to keep his plate just for the contrariness of it, even making a show of pulling his plate away from majima when he reaches for it - but really, it's just him trying to add some small levity to this depressing conversation. he hands the plate over with both hands, mouthing over a very quiet and very formal thank you for the food. ]

[ What? Tetora being polite?

Majima quirked an eyebrow at him, then reached a hand over to ruffle his hair. PAYBACK'S A BITCH, SON. ]
