MOD LOG #3
Arriving in style
Content Warnings: Fighting, death, violence
Themes: Survival, plot
It's early in the day when it happens. The red dust that seems to be everywhere sweeps through the city streets, mixing with the steady patter of rain and making it hard to see and breathe. All red and leaving the taste of copper if inhaled, what could have been an easy day without any trouble quickly becomes anything but. While those in the community are heading for cover or finding ways to continue on through it, the new arrivals begin waking up in different cities all over the world. There won't be anyone to greet them, and leaving the room through the door is their choice - after doing so, they'll immediately step out into the city they were assigned. The streets are empty, houses abandoned, everything crumbling and in ruins. There will be signs noting their location, which they'll catch a glimpse of before a sharp push forward causes darkness to engulf them.
Waking up for the second time, in Reims but not in the Reset Room, they'll come to inside the red dust as it whips through the streets of the community. They won't be alone for long. Another person will be waking up beside them, and after a few moments of disorientation, try to attack. They might have weapons or use their hands, and they will not stop until they've taken a fatal blow. Their blood is dust, and they, along with their weapons, disintegrate after they've died. Can you stop them on your own? Will someone come to your aid?
The Sight of Lightning
Content Warnings: Poison, sex
Themes: Survival, plot
The day after the storm, the same red dust will find its way through Reims and come into contact with every person. Since the dust is everywhere, some might not notice that it's floating through the community and know that something is off. The effects don't begin until night fall, where everyone will feel the desire to seek out companionship of many different kinds. Though it is not always the case, the people that saw each other in color will "want" to be with that person more strongly than they might already, and will be more likely to confess or do something about it. Some might feel an intense need to be around another person, though not necessarily sexually - almost as if they need that person around them to be happy or content. For some, it might be a desire that can only be fulfilled by more than one person.
The effects wear off the next time the person gets wet. This can be a splash of water across the face or fully submerged. Or even drinking something.

The touch to his hand reassures him that he hadn't, and he relaxes, leading them the rest of the way.
He allows his hand to drop away, but immediately finds himself missing Akira's presence... he supposes he should let go of this guy, too? But they both seem so comfortable...
With his free hand, he pulls out his device.]
By the way, have the two of you already met?
[What Akira signed earlier— "I'm sure it is a long story, all things considered"— seemed to imply that he was somehow already in the know.]
no subject
This isn't his Goro and he shouldn't want to be close to him so badly.
But he can't bring himself to pull away from that arm around his shoulders.]
Generally speaking, I prefer tea. But this is definitely a coffee day.
[By which he means, he tired himself out yesterday before spending the night either awake or having nightmares, and he desperately needs a caffeine jolt.]
He was the first person I encountered when I arrived in the storm yesterday.
[It's subtle, but there is something almost delicate to the way Kurama's fingers spell that sentence out. Like someone who is choosing their words like picking through a minefield.]
no subject
[ He's immediately getting started on enough coffee for the three of them. With his phone on the counter, he's able to read and work at the same time. It's not too long after he's got things set up, he pauses to sign, phone back in hand: ]
In retrospect, it seems like he was just humoring me.
[ He's looking. Right dead at the new guy as he signs that, but he does look to Akechi immediately afterwards. ]
He really rose above in the fight, and seemed to summon up quite a bit of battle finesse. It was impressive.
[ Riiiiiight back to the redhead, and there's a perfectly straight face as he finishes things off with: ]
But... it was almost like he knew me, so there was a bit of whiplash during our encounter.
[ Back to the coffee since this stuff doesn't brew itself. ]
no subject
He then looks to Akira, who is... using his words in such a way and has a look to his eyes that Akechi is well familiar with. He's getting the distinct feeling that he's punning, though he has no context. Still... he shakes his head lightly in exasperation, before his eyes draw to Kurama again.
He noticed that, too. Even under these effects, he was still keen enough to pick up on that moment of recognition in the man's eyes. How curious. Akechi is quite sure he's never seen him before in his life...
In either case... he gives him a gentle tug.]
Why don't we go sit down while we wait for the coffee to be made?
[A moment for this troubled young man to rest. He looked like he needed it.]
no subject
I wouldn't say I was humoring you at all. Even if I could have finished the fight on my own, I was still in a thorny predicament.
[He goes along with Akechi's soft tug willingly enough. Sitting down doesn't actually sound bad... He's very tired. Besides, he knows a segue when he reads one and he knows better than to think either teen will just let go of the mystery he presents. Kurama would definitely rather be sitting down for that.]
And...you don't need to soften it with that 'almost'. I'm aware of how painfully blatant I was during that fight. I'm not sure how believable you may find my explanation, however.
feel free to skip me for a couple of rounds <3
For the time being, he's focusing on the coffee. He'll be back in the conversation after it's ready. ]
no subject
But why is his mind tugging at him, feeling a need for... Akira, as well...]
I suppose questions are better suited for when we're all seated. For now, we should start off simple.
Akechi Goro.
no subject
He's just grateful that he manages to cut off the impulse to rest his head on the teenager's shoulder.]
Probably, yes.
Kurama. Or Minamino Shuuichi, if you prefer the formality a last name offers.
no subject
[Normally he would prefer a last-name basis, but as he's feeling rather warm and affectionate right now? He likes the familiarity of a first name. It almost feels like they're friends already...
Ah... but he probably won't see much of him again after the effects are gone, right? He'd seen a few others, the first time, but... that affection that had used to be there that wasn't without those effects felt something like a hole.
It flickers in his eyes, his mask not quite so refined while like this, but he does his best to push past it.]
Feel free to rest here as long as you need to. Akira won't mind. There's also an android here by the name of 9-S, but I highly doubt he would mind either.
no subject
[Oh, this is dangerous. He shouldn't have asked that. Allowing himself to call Akechi by his first name, even with a suffix, isn't just edging into risky territory, it's waltzing recklessly straight past the barbed wire and signs proclaiming 'No Man's Land' to take an afternoon stroll.
Of course, that's kind of what being a Phantom Thief is all about.
Which might be the reason that, when he sees the darker flicker in Akechi's expression, instead of pretending he didn't notice anything, Kurama reaches into his hair and pulls out a perfectly blooming yellow rose. He taps the soft petals against Akechi's nose before offering it to him.]
That's a very kind offer.
no subject
[His eyebrows lift at the flower that's produced from no where, and feeling it touched to his nose makes him wrinkle it a little. He smiles, reaching up and taking it delicately.]
You really "rose above", did you?
no subject
He'll pull all of these warm, content feelings under control in a minute. He's just...tired and it's so much easier to let it go for a moment.]
One could say that I blossom under adverse conditions.
no subject
[...nevermind the fact that he is being equally as, if not far more ridiculous without the use of puns. He also considers the rose in his hand. Should he fetch a glass with water for it...?]
no subject
[His expression is teasing, but hearing a playful chide instead of shameless punning right back at least reminds him of his situation enough to refrain from actual flirting.
Because there are a lot of flirtatious jokes that can be made about 'restraining orders'.
He also notices the look at the rose. That one's familiar.]
It doesn't need anything until I cut it loose from my ki.
no subject
After all three cups are done, he carries two over to the sitting area. ]
Here you go... Kurama.
[ Naturally, each letter is individually spelled out; the device manages to pick up on it, at least. ]
And here's yours, Akechi.
[ Yep, the usual sipping sign, but-- ]
Or should I say, Goro-kun?
[ Hiiint of a teasing grin, edging close to one Joker would wear. But he's walking away to get his own cup, and then returning and speaking to Kurama, first. ]
I hope it's all right, by the way. It's similar to what I made at Leblanc, but not a match, since describing coffee only gets you so far with Santa.
[ No, the device didn't translate that wrong, but listen... there are robots, androids, a magical flying carpet. Also, he's just going to assume Kurama knows what the hell he's talking about, given he clearly knows some other version of himself well.
Also, he's moving over to sit down - not next to him, but in Akechi's lap. Instead of bothering to explain a damn thing, he's sliding both legs into Kurama's lap while casually sipping his coffee. ]
no subject
But a word gives him pause. "Detective". Something he hasn't mentioned to any person since he arrived, and he couldn't come up for a good reason as to why Akira would bring it up.
It's then that Akira comes over and he looks up, then delicately sets the flower on the nearby table, then reaches up to take the coffee from Akira. At the change in name, he gives a blink, and... his cheeks might be heating up, ever so slightly?
He tries to hide it behind a sip of coffee, when...
Akira just takes a seat in his lap, and oh... that makes the blush intensify a bit.]
Aren't we comfortable?
[His feelings are somewhere between confused, embarrassed, amused and... somehow delighted. Well, if this is the way things are going to be? Akechi is going to set down his device in favor of bringing his hand up and running it through those messy curls.]
no subject
But he sets that aside for now, and sips his coffee gratefully before picking his device back up in his free hand.
...he also wonders a bit if that is literally Santa or someone using the title or just a joke about someone who likes to give gifts. But he'll set that aside for now, too.]
I'm not completely spoiled to Leblanc's house blend yet. This is fine, thank you.
[Akira sitting on Goro's lap is adorable but Kurama only has a second to appreciate it properly. Because then he has legs on his lap? And settled against Goro's side with Akira's legs stretched across his, that last nagging discontent dies with a happy whimper.
Doomed. He's utterly fucking doomed, because this feels perfect.]
no subject
It's not until after he sets his cup down, that he responds. ]
Maybe you can test my tea skills, later.
[ But, then he's looking to the detective... just in time to feel that hand moving through his hair. His expression softens, cheeks darkening. Whatever he was going to say? That's briefly out of the picture...
For just a split second he's leaning closer. He catches himself, and lifts his hands just a little... clumsily. ]
That feels really nice...
[ He glances to the side, swallows hard, holds a blink... then just lets his head rest on the older teen's shoulder. He can still see Kurama - in fact, he's signing to him, device still in hand, with the hint of a... knowing look in his eyes. ]
By the way, Kurama... Nice choice on the rose. That's actually the kind of rose I would have recommended for telling someone who's cherished to "be happy."
no subject
Akira leaning forward...
For a moment, the hand stalls. His breath is caught in his throat. And then Akira signs instead, and he... deflates, a little?
Oh, but Akira leaning his head on Akechi's shoulder does do things to his heart, and he resumes petting, and... his head turns, lips briefly brushing against his temple, an echo of what Akira did about a month and a half ago. With how his eyes have briefly fluttered closed, he misses the first part of what Akira signs, but catches the second part of it.
... cherished...?
It has his eyes widening slightly and glancing up to Kurama in question. But... they just met.
... or did they? He did call him "detective" early, but... maybe he just heard that from Akira...?]
no subject
[Oh. That 'almost' moment, followed by the affectionate gestures... Too cute. How in the world is Akira only maybe getting first name privileges now? It's sheer habit that has Kurama flick his device to camera mode and snap a picture of the two of them. He barely even notices he does it, more occupied with reading the translation of Akira's signs as he switches back to the text screen.
His frown is not entirely genuine but the barely visible tinge of pink to his face is. He lets his arms rest on Akira's legs as he types.]
Akira Kurusu, you are a menace. Yellow roses also symbolize friendship.
I suppose, now that we're all settled comfortably- some of us more than others -it's about time I explained myself.
...This is actually the third time I've been pulled into another world this way, dropped in with others. The first time it happened is when I first met Akira Kurusu and Goro Akechi. It's also where I found out that there can be...different versions of the same world. Variant timelines.
I've been to a version of your world since then. I've been to Leblanc...and to Mementos. I can prove that, if you need me to.
no subject
Though, he does latch on to what Kurama's saying, after a moment. He's tempted to comment on that first part - no, actually... ]
I thought it was common knowledge.
[ That glint in his eyes is very definitely knowing, but it's not that he left that information out on purpose. In fact, he does glance up to Akechi. He wasn't considering that Akechi might not know? Though, now... the fact that Kurama's blushing a tiny bit, frowning a tiny bit, all while feeling a need to elaborate...
In all honesty, it has him curious enough to want to ask, but it seems this isn't the time for that. In fact-- ]
Third time...?
[ His face is tensed up for a moment. With slightly narrowed eyes, he tilts his head. He's actually been to Mementos? But, the Metaverse is... ]
Ah... timelines. I've been thinking about those, ever since... [ hands stopping a little too quickly ] ... Well, anyway. I don't need you to prove it, but I wouldn't mind seeing the proof, just out of curiosity.
no subject
His gaze softens a little as he watches Kurama, a hint of sadness entering his eyes. These sorts of relationships... don't last. He'd only somewhat kept up with one person the first time he was affected like this, and certainly, there wasn't any lingering sense of friendship. ... or, at least, he doesn't think there is. He certainly wouldn't describe any sense of closeness—
... where is he going with this? Right... friendship. There's... one, maybe two people here he would consider friends, and with Akira— he has no idea what they are, anymore. He doesn't expect that that number should grow.
He focuses instead on Kurama's explanation, about him having been to a few different worlds. Variant timelines... and he'd met another version of Akira and himself. It does sound rather extraordinary, but so is their current situation and many other things he'd encountered in his life. And yet, he can't help but wonder what kind of a role they played in his life. His other self, in particular...
He takes a sip of his coffee before leaning over and setting it down on the table so that he can sign.]
Your knowledge of that place speaks for itself, I think. Does that mean you were able to get the app?
[Apparently, his other hand isn't going to be leaving Akira's head anytime soon. ...he might also still be nuzzling the side of his head a bit.]
no subject
[That soft admonishment comes with a gentle nudge of Kurama's knee against Goro's. It's a much more familiar gesture than he would usually allow himself given neither of these boys remember him.
But that's hard to keep in mind at the moment.
Kurama nods slightly at the responses to his explanation, a small, fond smile curving his lips at Goro's question. He sets down his coffee and reaches into the pocket of his jumpsuit to pull out an apparently regular smartphone, swiping it open quickly. A quick flick to a secondary screen leaves the familiar, ominous red of the MetaNav app in plain view.]
Exactly the proof I was talking about, actually. To anticipate the next question, no, I haven't managed to awaken a Persona yet. I have other abilities to fall back on, however, so I'm not entirely useless against Shadows.
no subject
He's glad his expression can't be seen by at least one of them, because his expression falters as his eyes snap open. Because there's a brief moment of conflict and genuine worry that he really fucking hates. Maybe that shows when he looks back to Kurama, and as he's silently praying the redhead was distracted by his phone.
Either way, though, Akira's immediately looking to his phone and asking a question after catching up. ]
So, you're sure you'll awaken to one...
[ That's a first, but he can't say it's not a common theme that an ally who's ventured in has come out with one. ]
What abilities?
no subject
He looks a little caught at the gentle scolding, his own cheeks tinging pink. A very soft noise comes out of him, a tiny protest at that gesture that was coupled with the scolding, as he snuggles a bit more into Akira, almost... pouting, a bit? Let him brood!! He's under the influence, not dumb, and he's so certain of how things will play out... well... sometimes, it's hard to enjoy a moment that's so fleeting, knowing you're the main reason that it is.
His eyes look at that phone, and sure enough it is that navigation app... And he hasn't managed to awaken a Persona "yet". That's bold...
He doesn't have much to add at the moment; he's still sulking a bit from being called out. He ends up burying his face into those black curls, hiding away from the world. "Be happy" doesn't mean "start brooding again"... easy for him to say. He probably wasn't nearly as—... needy as Akechi was, probably wasn't such a mess and hopelessly lonely and...
Urgh, these thoughts need to stop. Why don't they go away, even when he feels like this...]
