INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

[ he gets the frame balanced on his shoulders like a piggyback ride and waits in the sandpath for her to get what she needs. it's hard not to smile to himself, thinking of micro and his tech-controlled safehouse. as much as he misses the other man, he's glad he's not here, even if the native's giving frank a picture of him was ominous as hell. first the kid who'd taken apart his device and now friday -- frank knows he needs to stick with the smart ones. they'll get to the bottom of this before he ever could.

frank makes an OK symbol with his hand as she makes her way back to him with the loot, before putting it back on the bed in preparation to head back. ]

[It's a carpet, and those aren't supposed to move. Not even in her world, where magic existed but was limited to supernatural creatures, holy rings, and enchanted swords. But at the same time, it's a carpet — not exactly something known for being dangerous or even especially troublesome.

After a stunned minute or two, curiosity inevitably overcomes the bafflement. The carpet seemed....intelligent? Those gestures were recognizable somehow, despite being performed by tassels instead of hands. Posture smoothing out into something much more relaxed, Lys puts her hand up to her mouth to spit out the Snitch, gripping it tightly between calloused fingers, and starts buffing it on her jumpsuit. It's the best she can do without any napkins on hand.

Unable to type out questions on her device AND keep a firm grip on the fluttering sphere of metal (not having two hands was getting to be a real pain), Lys settles for holding up the Snitch and mouthing, slowly:

Is this yours?]

[Faith actually took the time now to look at him, since she was calming down from her earlier imagined slight. No offense to Frank but he looked like rolled over shit.

She was clearly looking at the nasty cuts and bruises as gestured toward the door, but she didn't look horrified or like she was about to baby him or anything- just mildly curious... and a touch fascinated. Whatever had happened, it had been one hell of a beating. Faith knew a thing or two about both getting and receiving those. She'd had her fair share of bruises.

She thought about the implied offer, then typed back.]

[Rosa is less fazed than one should probably be at the sight of an approaching robot -- in the general weirdness of this place, all the smaller individual weirdnesses have sort of homogenized into a general hum of Weird that she hasn't processed enough to start picking apart yet. but her eyes do get kind of big. Lu Li is a lot stranger to look at up close than she was from across the room.

she reaches back to check her hair without looking away, jerking a little as she feels the change...then stuffs it down the back of her jumpsuit collar hurriedly, fumbling a reply]

[Remus really should know better than to pet random dogs but he seems very well-trained, and--

It feels a bit stupid, to miss the dog Padfoot specifically, but it's not like he doesn't miss the man Sirius was even more.

He follows the dog out, carefully shutting the door so it doesn't make a sound, and considers something for a moment. They can't very well have a dog trapped in the house until someone happens to come along to open the door for him.

It's simple enough to transfigure a pet flap into the door, then an extra silencing charm on it to keep it suitably quiet. He does so, then reaches a careful hand out for the dog to smell. If that doesn't get a hostile response, he'll move to pet him, scritching between his ears.]

[ Ivor only gives him a brief look – not at all bothered by Genos' general appearance – before switching over to text. Maybe this is going to be easier for a lot of people until they start getting the hang of speaking with their hands. He gently guides Genos' device away from him and simply texts him; showing screens just feels too archaic too. ]

I was speaking from experience. I don't know what these things are really like.

[ And because he's amused: ] They could want spare parts just as much as organic material.

[ At least he's not arguing with him—or asking a million questions. And once Ivor has both devices, he quickly strips part of the one he's just gotten so he can adjust a few components – it's not really all that much when he (almost) knows what he's doing – and put it back together. It's sort of crude without having the proper program, but when he syncs the devices, a faint holographic screen appears between them. It's similar to that of his comp band, though far less advanced since he still physically has to type into the device, but this way, they can share a common screen when they're together. ]

I can make it better when I have more time to figure it out. [ Which means he can even program the font to auto-adjust itself so no one has to squint. ]

It's very nice to meet you. You can call me Akira.

What's your name?

Well, it makes more sense, in his head, to just keep names simple with an animal. An animal... talking to him through some insanely impressive piece of technology. Akira's studying it for a moment, and then... very slowly reaching out.

The dog is acting calm, so Akira's going to reach out and try to gently pet his head, fingertips aiming to scratch behind his ear. It's just for a moment as his eyes rest on the injury. He'd... arrived here, straight out of the Metaverse. He hasn't tried using any of the Personas since he got here, but then he hasn't needed to...

... until now.

After the moment of deliberation, he pulls his hand back, and then types a message to the creature.

I'm going to try to heal your leg.

Hold still.

[ He's used to dealing with all sorts of different kinds of people. For a short period of time he was recruiting for the Resistance before getting into missions that General Leia Organa needed done by someone she trusted. A team that he could get together to do something other than sit idle. Poe looks at Jan wondering if her body language would reflect in the response he would get. He's not afraid or intimidated. There's no flinching being made as her device comes his way so he could see what it says. ]

I didn't see any within the house. There could be a shop around here if you wanted to go venture with someone. It might be helpful for other things to carry in with. As well as place on the floor to make it quieter in areas or floor boards that could creak.

After a moment, her device comes back out. Conversation was conversation, however limited, and thus a balm for her nerves.]

And here was another muscle she was only starting to be able to flex. Asking for help. Gross.]

[He pauses, stopping to pinch the bridge of his nose like it will stop the irritating train of thought.]

I'm not some media junkie type of hero... [Although, if this person's only idea of heroes was from comic books, they wouldn't have a clue what the job actually entailed.] I respond to some large events, major villain sightings... I've worked with a few offices in cooperative efforts but these days I get enough done to get by on my own. It's a lot more logistics and paperwork than people care to believe.

Does that address your question? [He holds their gaze. While he's spoken a bit about heroes as a career, there is a pointed lack of his own abilities. It's a bit of an old habit. The more people knew about you, the more that could be countered.]

There's a mouthed Thank you for his patience, at least.

Friday's happy enough with her findings as she starts to head back towards the house. Heavy as her load might be now, it can't be as uncomfortable as a bed frame, so at least she tries to ignore the way her arms ache. She should've done more working out, like Wednesday and Thursday.
