INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1
Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror
You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.
Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.
A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.
Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.
This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.
Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.
Now, you're to settle into your new home.
The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror
Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.
As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.
Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.
Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot
It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...
The Sound Eaters.
In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

[ Once inside he would continue to go through the great room and dining room to get back to the open door of the room. Luckily, he had moved everything out the way that would have been in their way to do this. Just going in a straight line, once inside his room he would go a bit on a diagonal with the desk. He placed a long skinny carpet where he wanted to go so make it as quiet as he could when placing it back down. ]
[ After the task is down and he places his side down, he goes towards the middle to help her place her side down on the carpet. ]
Thank you for helping me with this. Is there anything you need help with?
no subject
And here was another muscle she was only starting to be able to flex. Asking for help. Gross.]
I need pretty much everything for my room. Only have the mattress so far. Bed frame would be a good start? Maybe a dresser?
Not that I have any clothes but this ridiculous thing yet.[She tugged at the ugly green jumpsuit she was wearing.] But wishful thinking, right? Maybe I'll get some.
no subject
Asking for help wasn't that hard and no one needs to know that she did. Poe was helpful in general. If he needed it, he would ask. It also built a bit of trust along the way too. ]
There's probably a good dresser. I'm sure we'll be able to find a bed frame at the furniture place.
Maybe we'll get different clothing later one. [ He's in a orange reddish jumpsuit that looked more orange. ] It's better to have hope than no hope at all. How do the natives get their clothing?
no subject
[He was the first she'd run into.]
no subject
[ Poe is gonna try to meet the other housemates if he gets a chance too. If not right away, hopefully during random encounters. ]
no subject
Looking around, Faith headed in the direction everyone else seemed to be going. Everyone seemed to have just gotten here, so surely they were all headed to the same place which was likely the place all the furniture was at.]
no subject
[ He smiles at the flying part since he'll at least be able to do that. Even though he won't be controlling it. He'll be able to direct Carpet to do things. Poe keeps with her realizing that everyone is going for the same place. Hopefully they'll be able to get someone good. ]
no subject
Getting to the building, Faith stepped inside, glancing back to be sure Poe was with her before venturing in further.
She wasn't sure what she wanted. But a bed frame was her first goal. ]
no subject
Poe was right behind her, keeping up with her not wanting to get lost with everyone else around. ]
<font face="courier new'>Bed frame right? Anything else to keep our eyes open for?</font>
no subject
[She scanned around. Bed frame, bed frame, bed frame... ah! She pointed to the corner where she could see a few wooden frames.]
no subject
[ Poe watches her point out to the corner with the wooden frames. That should be easy enough to get to. He points forward to let her know he's going for it. The people wouldn't be a problem. As he goes forward toward the corner he would gently put a hand on some backs while mouthing apologies to get on by. Once he gets to the corner he'll take one. He doesn't necessarily need one for himself. He might come back for a box to put it in though or something like that. There's another scan of the area. He spots a decent dresser and looks for Faith. Once they catch eyes he'll point in the area of the dresser for her to have an opinion on it. ]
no subject
Poe had gotten ahead of her while Faith was trying not to lose her very small amount of cool. Then he was waving at her from a distance and went where he was pointing, having to gracefully hop over a couch between her and their destination. She'd done it without making a noise, so no one could give her the stink eye about it.]
[Ah, there. A dresser. She moved forward, examining the thing. She pulled out a drawer to test it. It started to creak in protest and Faith stopped immediately. Looking to Poe when he came up, she texted.] Maybe it would be okay with some grease on the drawer wheels or something?
no subject
There's a wide eyed stare as he looks around wondering if anyone else heard. He glances down at her text when he realized no one was. ]
There's an oil bucket out front of our house door. I'll take some out to use for the drawers. Hopefully it's not all of them. If it is, we're gonna have to do the bottom first and work upwards. We could even put some of it on the drawer edges to see if it'll help.
no subject
Faith moved behind it, grabbing the edges carefully and lifted it up. There we go! And up it went over top her head on its back end so the drawers were facing up. She glanced back at Poe, grin triumphant, then nodded her head toward the door. She'd need help setting it down silently, but she'd be able to get it back to the house like this at the very least. Now the challenge was going to be dodging people in this place to get out.]
no subject
The next thing that happened he didn't expect would. There's a surprise expression with a slight point of his hand. His expression is clearly a 'what?!' kind of look too. She didn't mention she was strong enough for that kind of thing and with the nod. Poe wasn't going to linger or wait on that. So, he turns while nodding determined to move people from side to side to clear a path while pointing behind him at the woman carrying the dresser. He would give looks of get out of the way if they weren't budging from their paths.
He hopes that she's following close as he does this. He hates being rude but at the same time it was for their safety too. Poe would be reminding himself to ask her things one they were outside of the shop. ]
no subject
Once they got closer to the house, she slowed down, waiting for Poe to either get the bedframe inside of set it down. Then she would need help setting the dresser quietly down so they could oil up the drawers.]
no subject
As they got closer and up to the house, he'll open the door before going inside before her. Poe would put the bed frame up against a wall by her bed while coming back toward her to help with putting the dresser down quietly. However, he would let her pick where first before doing that step. ]
no subject
There. She wiped off her pants as she stood up, looking around her room. It was starting to actually look like something she could call home. It had been a while since she'd had a place like that. A moment to text him.] Thanks for the help, roomie.
no subject
He looks around the room as well nodding at it. All she really needed was to pick up a few decorate things of her own choosing. Poe glances at the text before sending out a reply. ]
You're welcome. You could have lifted that desk all on your own. Why didn't you say anything? And is that the only ability you have?
[ All that they needed to do was grab some oil from the bucket outside. Poe didn't want to bring the entire bucket only because they could forget to put it back out. But at the same time it was probably the only thing that had a brush they could use. ]
no subject
And yes, it's an ability. I'm a Vampire Slayer. [Looking to see if there was any recognition of what the hell that meant she continued.] Basically I'm really strong, fast, and fight the bad guys.
no subject
[ In truth he was reckless and impulsive. He probably could take a beating but he wasn't sure if he would be able to with someone that had super strength. He didn't know anything about a Vampire Slayer. ] Fighting the bad guys can be fun. Those are a bunch of skills that could be helpful. If I told you I was in the middle of trying to plan for an ambush, had enough people, would you want in on it? It'll mostly be to figure out what the Sound Eaters are. If they can be hurt. I figured I'll provide distraction and noise. But I'm gonna need other people who would be able to use their skills to fight them. It may mean taking a risk that most won't want to take. Dying could be a possibility.
no subject
But if you get a lot of good people together that can handle their own, I'd be willing to come along too.
no subject
I'm trying to find good people. I know all about recruiting and how it works. I'll tell you the entire plan once I get enough people on board. I'm going to need to run the plan to someone. It may not sound much but I'll be able to figure something out.
no subject
And they had to do something. Even a mediocre plan was better than sitting around doing nothing.] Well, count me in. I'm ready to try to kick the shit out of some sound eaters.
no subject
Alright, I'll keep you in this plan. I'm sure there's others that will want to too. If you need any other help with anything, don't be afraid to contact me. Since you'll be helping me with this plan. It's only fair.
