INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

An android.

Okay... Sure. Lilina supposes that isn't the strangest thing she's heard all day. Though that does have her glancing about curiously.

If you're an android, then where is your programmer?

Ah. She's equating it to being a robot...

[Turning the little baggie over, he catches the strange... button? Clasp? Magnet? In his hand, holding it on his palm for Teddy to sniff at. Was this the dog's special trinket?

Programmer?

A2, as far as she's aware, doesn't have a programmer...

I was made by other androids, if that's what you're talking about. They're probably all dead by now though.

[Kara can't help but snort out a quick laugh at the man's complaint when she overhears it. She's across the room from him, but even though they can talk here, the town hall falls into hushes of silence out of fear often enough that most quiet conversation carries. She skims the crowd until she finds him and, in an effort to meet as many new arrivals as she can, she goes over to him.]

I'm guessing there's not... things that go bump in the night where you're from. Like monsters or, [she adjusts her glasses, smiling awkwardly.] aliens or anything like that.

[ Naruto is oblivious to how dumb and obvious his question might have been because holy shit a moving carpet is all he can really run with at the moment. He looks elated at Carpet's trick, shifting up to sit on his knees and looking at him like he's the coolest thing he's ever seen. To be honest it's definitely up there. ]

i've never met a carpet before yknow!

[ A pause, he reconsiders, adds: ]

well i guess ive met some but none of them have ever like

[ Mike's smile is small but it's there at her 'cool' comment. Why yes he does have awesome taste in toys, thank you. Anyone who thought otherwise was wrong.

He takes in her sooty appearance with a raised brow. Why did she look like she'd been inside a chimney? ]

[ she's not worried about a guy who may or may not be concealing a tank in his jumpsuit -- more worried about the guy in the hat, but neither of them return to the event looking worse for the wear. he had that shiner when he left, she's pretty sure. there's really no common link between the folks who keep wandering off with the goddamn Hatman except that they're all stupid enough to do it. ]

[Kara smiles over at Rey from her own bench, her plate of peach slices emptied faster than she wanted. Seems she's gotten caught people staring. Well, onwards and upwards. It'd be weirder if she didn't say anything now. Instead, she types out a message and brings it over, screen out to Rey to read.]

Sorry for staring. You look as hungry as I feel, haha.
Are you okay?

[ She blinks in surprise at the question. Taking the time to look back over the natives, to think about what little they've been told of the Sound Eaters. It makes her mouth scrunch in thought. At the same time, though - she doesn't really have a life to go back to. ]

I think I could. Want feels like a weird word for it, though.

[death will be no escape. she acts like this to ghosts, too.

Jan huffs to herself and steps fearlessly up to the robot, jabbing her forefinger at the front of that incongruous jumpsuit and standing on her tiptoes to get pitifully closer to looking into the impassive face. on one hand, nerves would probably be warranted, but on the other hand, they have clearly progressed to a level of what even that surpasses fear.

she waves her device in front of Lu Li's eye. LISTEN UP!]

[ he's just as quiet, and just as light on his feet despite his bulky frame. he follows after her, and honestly is a little disappointed in himself when she gets the jump on him. he keeps his hands down, braced against the wall as she hisses in his ear. his heart is leaping up into his throat, but at least he won't have to try and figure out a way to silently fight her off.

slowly, after a beat, he shakes his head, catching her eyes in the dark space with his own wet gaze. ]

[ Picking apart his attitudes and his swiftly changing moods, especially when he was trying to call a truce without really saying so, grates on Naruto so much in such a succinct and familiar way that he doesn't really realise he's following her until he's caught her arm, letting out a very audible grunt of frustration. Neither of them are going to be in the good books of the locals if this continues.

He gives her a tug, a silent bid for her to wait, while he furiously types. It's full of little typos - too many characters in certain words, words repeated, all products of a guy who's never used a touchscreen before coming here trying to use one quickly - but it's still relatively understandable. ]

i can still be angry at you for gettin in my way while checking if youre ok!!
you being slow doesnt mean i shouldnt care about you being hurt!

[ Maybe his words come off a little intense for a stranger, but that's just the way Naruto is. Sure this girl might be rubbing him up entirely the wrong way, bringing things to the surface he's not really happy to consider right now, but she's still a person and therefore someone Naruto feels responsible for. ]

Arrival

[ Padmé isn't the only on that shouldn't be. He feels much the same with a lingering threat that he left. That he wanted to desperately wanted to get back too. Quiet everywhere seemed so wrong, there wasn't even birds. Did anything really fly around here? Poe knew deep within that he would slowly grow twitchy if he didn't keep on going. Keep on walking, eventually he made it onto the same path as her.

The sand had been an interesting way to stay quiet. Others may not like it so much but it didn't remind him of the sand on Jakku. That sand had been a bit rough to walk through also much much hotter. Survival though was something he learned a lot about though. He watches her from a short distance before slowly approaching. Poe would step into her view point. He's also already on the device typing out a message. If she were to glance up she'll see it.]

[ she honestly didn't expect him to follow. most of the time, the person she brushed off was only more than happy to let the interaction die, so she's more than a little startled when she feels the tug on her arm, though fortunately she whips around fast enough to realize it isn't some random assailant or monster come to get her.

still, she's mildly embarrassed for the brief scare, evident in her pink cheeks. she lets out a short, aggrieved breath of her own, hastily typing up her response. ]

I'm fine. Happy?

[ ...except she's holding her device up with the hand she'd fallen on, the heel of it still red and swollen. ]

[Akechi is eying his own room, perhaps considering getting his own desk when he's tapped on the shoulder. He looks over to the man that's approached him, then reads the words.

...ah. Well... he'd asked something similar of another roommate earlier, so... he supposes he might as well pay it forward, or... something.]

Akechi.

[He glances around for a moment.]

It seems most of the rooms are taken, but should we also have some furniture for the main room? Perhaps some chairs, if nothing else.

[ The bed question was needed because of what she had said about having a better one here. Poe may have been on a cruiser ship but the bed was probably a standard size, small. He could have been sharing a room with many people in a similar barrack military state. If she asked more questions she would know where he's coming from with his strange line of questions.

He can tell that she's growing more determined which is needed for a situation quite like this. There's a slow growing smile as they continue. ]

Scavenging life isn't always the best, but you do what you got to do live.
I'm used to hearing machinery beeping all the time, loud noise from engines, a lot of sound in general. A lot of voices from people.
This will be different from what I'm used to looting.

[ another reason Jess chose the garage: private ingress. relatively. she won't be fooling around with no foyers, thank you, and she plans to avoid the hell out of the communal kitchen space. at the end of the day, having shaken off the disorientation with the help of her old pals anger and suspicion, she has a better idea of what she actually needs in here: a mini-fridge.

Jess doesn't think she'll sleep, nor will she spend every waking hour lying on a mattress in a cement box, but needs a break from all the frickin' people. she's sipping moonshine cribbed from Jade (a teenager, god love this place and that doffed up creep) and getting her head together, batting dirt from her legs when she hears the gentle rake at the door. she's content to ignore it until she remembers that here, that's kind of a big deal. supposedly. she's not buying it yet, she just refuses to endanger anyone else with her incredulity.

negating any tidying effect on her clothes, she brushes her hands off on her knees and goes to the door. forgets to check the hinges. her glare is off the mark by a couple heads at least, and chipped by confusion when it does land. whose dog is this? and what's that-ohhhhh. okay forget the first question. Jess kneels down in the open doorway, gauging his or her temperament. and confirm she's seeing what she's seeing. ]

[ There was a lot of questions to ask and narrowing it down to one was difficult. Poe could easily blame his over frustration of emotion and guilt. He gives a small shake of his head while rubbing his forehead a little. There's a brief pause before he answers her back. ]

It's very limited. The town meeting with a sound proofing. The houses have some soundproofing but it's still not the best and you have to be careful about how loud you are. Unless you really proof it good. Now, that my mind has settled, asking if there's a way to get off planet or a way out may be something. But... it's your choice in the end of what to ask. You may come up with something better.

[ Two places to really speak wasn't much. It did mean they couldn't talk at all out here. But maybe they could find a way. A cave that echoes forever in a way that the creatures wouldn't know where the sound was actually coming from. If a cave exists. ]

Certainly, no modern-day government would approve of an experiment which psychologically toys with any human subject, let alone those who were abducted.

[It's close enough to a bow and he gets the sense of politeness. There'e propriety in that and that's fine. The lack of emotion in her voice is fine, too, although it clashes with what she says then. His eyes narrow a bit, at the apology.]

People who are preoccupied with being "special" rarely contribute enough anyways.
