INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

( of course, ignis has always been the rock the party could count on. any anxiety or uncertainty he may have been feeling, for now, goes right over noctis' oblivious head. the truth is, as selfsh as it may be... he's grateful not to be in this alone.

he can guess what that look means, and giving the kitchen another glance around, he nods. ignis of all people would probably want to take this place for a spin, right? for good measure, he gives his stomach a soft pat, too.

feed your feelings, right? he's content to hang around and watch if ignis will tolerate it. )

[Ignis is happy to let Noctis hover around as long as he doesn't get in the way. (If he does, it's an immediate banishment for you, Noct. You may be the prince, but the kitchen is his kingdom.) Immediately, he sets to work taking stock of what food is in this house.

It's...mostly canned things, to which Ignis makes a very visible face of disgust. It's what he expected after seeing this place in the state it was in, but still, he finds himself disappointed. Fresh ingredients are the way to go every single time. But he supposes he can't be choosy in a desolate town, if you could even call this settlement that. He'll have to improvise.

He starts taking out cans and lining them up on the counter and it's...mostly vegetables. Sorry, Highness, but his hands are tied.]

( noct manages to stay out of the way for the most part, but he can't help but be curious all the same. every once in awhile there might be a peer over ignis' shoulder, and every time a new can of vegetables makes its way to the fray...

he makes a face.
a face you have probably seen many times over the years, friend.
a face that says... 'is this real life?'
only with more upturned lip and disgust.

not only is he locked in some unfamiliar world with crazy monsters that apparently eat sound but the food is almost all...
vegetables.

ignis, pls fix this. grabbing a can of beeeeeeans, this is one prince looking your way with a sour... maybe also pleading, expression. )

[Never in his life has Ignis been so happy to see that face. That pouty, whiny, childish face that Noctis has given him countless times ever since he first started taking responsibility for feeding him. If Noctis is making faces and doing his fussy eater routine, that means something is still relatively normal between them.

If Noctis wants to have a silent argument about vegetables, Ignis is more than happy to give it to him. He resists the urge to sigh audibly as he steps to one side and gestures at the food stores at one hand, inviting Noct to rummage through them himself and pick out what he wants to eat.

Most of them are going to be vegetables and beans, but look hard enough and there's some preserved fruits and maybe some bread as well.

There won't be any beeeeeans if Noct doesn't want them, but your choices here are pretty limited, Highness.]

whoops this was marked read in my inbox by mistake, sorry!!

( an argument about vegetables was just the comfort they both needed, perhaps— as noctis flashes an indignant gaze towards his steward as he steps in to take care of this himself.

after the first half dozen yield poor results and actually have him contemplating which vegetables are worse than others, he finally finds it. unearthing something from behind the dust and unholy depths of these foreign cupboards he fishes out his prize...!

it's a can of chili. one that hasn't seen the light of day for a long, long time. and noctis is smiling as though he'd won some kind of victory— holding it high like a trophy. )
ebonyengine: (☠ - I'll pretend I didn't hear that)

it's ok!

[personal profile] ebonyengine 2018-02-15 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Somehow, Noctis has managed to find the one thing that isn't canned vegetables. Ignis doesn't know whether he should be disappointed or impressed at the lengths his charge will go to avoid the dreaded vegetables.

Ignis unceremoniously takes the can from Noct to examine it. It looks...old. Now, he knows canned things can have a long shelf life, but they can't last forever. He gives Noctis a questioning look - are you sure this is what you want?

Is there even an expiration date on this thing? He's having trouble finding one.]

( it's terrible ignis. the edges are rusted and the label is partially worn off from years of being a relic of the cupboards. but still, noctis looks pleased about his discovery. so much so that he's leaning back, crossing his arms over his chest with a self-satisfied grin.

you can almost hear the see? told you so, written all over him.
and there's a nod. definitely. he definitely wants it.
mistakes will be made today. )

[Ignis weighs his options. He doesn't want to feed Noct this can of most definitely expired chili. It probably can't even be considered chili anymore. On the one hand, if Noct wants to make a decision, albeit a very poor one, Ignis should probably let him. Noct is still going to be king, once they get their country back, and Ignis can't make all the decisions for him, as much as he wants to.

On the other hand, if he willingly lets Noctis eat this, it would feel like intentionally poisoning his liege. If they were back at home, he'd probably be tried for treason or something. He's not sure. There's no laws about the consequences for letting royalty eat expired food because they're being actual children.

So...no, he's not going to do this. Ignis shakes his head in adamant refusal. He's not going to play a part in regicide, however indirect and by said king's own choice. So if Noct wants the chili, he's going to have to do it himself. The can opener's right there.]

( challenge accepted, ignis.
you see, noct has an advantage here. he's been making mostly poor decisions since he had decided to move out. you've seen the horrors. you know how this boy has lived...

whether it's out of subtle defiance or ignorance, he reaches for the can opener after briefly considering it. honestly, how bad can it even be? he wonders, putting the tool to work.

he's careful as he uses it, still trying to master their new noise levels and eventually the quietly gives way. from underneath... come the horrors. whatever might have made up the sauce has congealed near the top. what once could have been called meat in some dark corners of the world look discoloured and menacing... and something is crusting along the edges.

with a shrug, still thinking it's probably not that bad since the can was sealed, right? noctis leans in for a sniff... )
ebonyengine: (☠ - Whose side are you on?)

[He was hoping that Noctis would back down. But alas, it seems he has underestimated his dear prince. Ignis watches with a sense of growing dread as Noctis operates the can opener, each movement making him more and more fearful at what monstrosity would lie beneath the lid.

Once it's fully open, it turns out to be even worse than what Ignis had imagined. It's a putrid muck, an abomination. It's rancid and a color that Ignis has never seen before. This is sacrilege against the very gods themselves.

No. This has gone far enough. Ignis reaches out to grab Noctis' arm with a look that's asking, pleading him to reconsider.

Please, Noct. Stop. Don't do this. He is begging you.]
cxivth: (??)

[personal profile] cxivth 2018-02-19 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
( inching closer and closer with his nose towards the can, the ungodly smell had already reached him, long before he felt the grab from ignis. but it's his friend's movement that stays him in place, and he glances over, reading that bespectacled expression.

he knows he shouldn't. even as un-conniseurly as noct was, he knew this was a poor idea. he knew food shouldn't look or smell anything like that. dare he say it was... even worse than vegetables.
that's right, he's had the impossible thought of a lifetime. worse than vegetables. but he'll... just keep that to himself.

looking from ignis, to the can, to ignis, and back to the can again... his shoulders sag in a silent show of defeat.
so close to victory... and yet, so far.

his brow hoists upwards in question as he places it down on the counter, isn't there any way to save the good bits? if anyone can do it, iggy... it's you.
please don't kill this impossible dream. )
ebonyengine: (☠ - And here we are)

[personal profile] ebonyengine 2018-02-21 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[At first, Ignis is confused as to what Noctis is trying to ask him, looking first at Noctis then down at the can on the counter. He's glad that Noctis has decided not to eat the chili, but then what is that look for?

It takes a while before it finally dawns on him. Does Noct...want him to do something with this? Is he serious about this? Of course he is. It's Noctis. He's always deathly serious about the most ridiculous things. The frown Ignis gives in return says everything: No. Despite what the prince may think, he's not a miracle worker. There are upper thresholds to what a mere mortal can do and Ignis is already regularly pushing them daily. This is one limit that cannot be broken.]

wrapping up with this maybe?? c:

[personal profile] cxivth 2018-03-01 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
( all right. that it, then. noctis is sufficiently defeated. crossing his arms he's nearly pouting, leaning back against that wall he first started at, looking longingly at the can of horrors. at what could have been...

closing his eyes, he gives it an appropriate send off, a moment of silence...
and after awhile, finally opens them again, pressing a hand against his stomach. he was definitely getting hungry, but...

sigh
well, he reaches forward, inspecting the cans that iggy had produced, trying to decide on the lesser of all the evils before him... )
