INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

Armitage Hux | Star Wars

[personal profile] cronusian 2018-01-16 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
The Man in the Hat
[The jumpsuit is unflattering, and Hux looks as uncomfortable in it as he feels. He spends the party watching the natives closely and eating the peaches only after seeing others eat them earlier.

They aren't terrible, and don't appear to be poisoned. He has a different jar tucked unopened under his arm from an earlier excursion to a stranger's houses. He had been hoping for something more useful but he would save the alcohol for a necessary occasion. Like later that night.

As he moves through the people he looks for anyone familiar. Someone he saw in the room, or a housemate, or just a strangely familiar face. He uses the device like a datapad, pressing past frustration and accepting the resources currently available to him.]

Has anyone mentioned where we might learn this visual language?

Closed to Eleanor - Paired Patrol
[Hux takes the patrol as seriously as a walk of his ship to ensure everything is in order. It's by necessity a silent affair until they come across an area that surprisingly is in need of attention.

A pair of shutters hang loose, knocking whenever a breeze slips between the buildings. He makes his way over there after a quick halting touch of the back of his hand to the side of her arm. Tools were not in handy supply from the natives, and saws were likely out of the question, meaning they would need to get creative, but he presses a hand to one, attempting to see if it could be straightened and repaired or needed to be removed. He looks to her before looking for his device.]

We need something to either loosen or tighten the screws.

Sound Eaters
[The ability to speak, even temporarily, is a welcome one. He keeps his voice low and his words a whisper, but he makes full use of this temporary reprieve. It doesn't even matter who is around him, for once Hux is on the more talkative side.]

How much of this do you actually believe?

[ oh look it's that douchebag who immediately snagged the master bedroom in their house. not like frank wanted it, he had sought out his own coveted digs just as quickly. it's just worth noting, is all. there's something about hux that just gives off... prick vibes. maybe that's just his bad mood talking.

frank frowns when the device is pushed under his nose, chewing and swallowing his last peach slice before shaking his head. the only reason he's not storming off right now is because he also wants to know about the language so he can stop carrying around this brick in his pocket. and besides that, good digestion is hard to come by, so he's staying put for the forseeable future. ]

[Hux has no remorse for knowing what he wants. He took the room best suited to him, and if anyone has a problem with it, he's sure they could go find another building.

He sighs at the less than helpful response and types up another message.]

Enjoying the peaches?

[ he points at him. careful with the sighing, buddy. then shakes his head because no one seems to be tackling hux (yet.) he just shrugs a shoulder and chugs some of the sweet syrup as a reply. gross, but he needs the sugar to function probably. ]

[Her partner for the patrol is quiet. Well. Everyone here is quiet. Still, she gets a sense he might always be. She follows along with barely an introduction not entirely sure what she's looking for.

It's not til she got to this place that she's aware of just how many things make noise. Holy shitballs it was a lot.

The touch startles her, but she's grateful for a task. Even if it looks impossible. She fishes out her device to respond.]

dont suppose you brought a screwdriver with you? maybe one of the locals has one

They didn't seem in a hurry to hand off tools. [Or weapons, and Hux is displeased by that, more than just a little. If this threat is so great, he prefers to face it armed. He stands by, giving the knocking shutters an assessing stare before reaching up to still them.

Still, if sound is the threat these people claim it to be, this is a problem that needs a quick solution.

With one hand occupied, he can't type, so he waves her over and taps the shutter with his other hand for her to take over the hold.]

[She nods, with a one shoulder shrug as a response. He has a point. She watches him from a few steps back, concerned that his solution is to just stand there holding the wooden shutters before she gets the picture.

Eleanor scooches forward, hands fumbling onto the shutter. It's not that it's heavy, it's more that it's awkward since she can't communicate without the damned device. She gives him a look clearly saying, now what?]

[Reigen recognizes Armitage from the house they got assigned to, though he hadn't stopped to chat. Reigen shrugs and pulls out his device.]

They told me where to find it. Lessons this Sunday, we can go at the same time.

[Armitage recognizes Reigen and considering the lack of useful responses from the natives, he's relieved to finally get a straight answer on something. He sizes him up a moment before nodding in agreement and offering over some of the bread he had taken earlier.

His gesture not entirely selfless. If Reigen took and ate some he could at least ensure no fast acting poisons lurked in the offered food.]

That sounds like a plan. What's your name?
saltsplash: (MobDonalds)

[personal profile] saltsplash 2018-01-18 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Reigen, perhaps a little uncautious compared to Armitage, sticks the bread right in his mouth before typing a reply.]

Reigen Arataka, the rising star of the paranormal world.
cronusian: (24)

[personal profile] cronusian 2018-01-19 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Reigen's enthusiasm works in his favor. He gives the man a guarded, perplexed stare at the title, but responds in kind.]

Armitage Hux, General of the First Order.

[When Reigen doesn't turn blue or drop to the floor in paralysis, Hux eats a piece of his own bread, finally giving in to hunger over paranoid caution.]

Which system is that located in?

[It's hard to tell if Hux is serious when text does so little to convey tone.]
saltsplash: (What's that supposed to be?)

[personal profile] saltsplash 2018-01-20 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
[System? Reigen raises an eyebrow, clearly not understanding what Armitage means.]

It'd be easy enough to test out if you don't believe them.

pTuan's expression and tone are indifferent as she speaks. It's not a challenge, it's not even goading - it's just matter of fact. Proving their claims or disproving them would be as simple as going outside and shouting.]
cronusian: (28)

[personal profile] cronusian 2018-01-18 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm skeptical, not suicidal.

[His tone is just as indifferent. Death isn't a consequence he's willing to risk for answers. He frowns, watching the natives with his eyes narrowed and his arms clasped behind his back.]

It's easier to wait for someone else to make that error. I doubt it will take long.

I doubt they're lying. There doesn't seem to be anything that they're gaining from this. They're using a lot of time and resources on making sure nothing can make a noise.

[A beat and still in that neutral tone.]

But why wait? I'm sure you could talk someone into trying if you cared that much about the answer.
cronusian: (10)

[personal profile] cronusian 2018-01-18 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I had other priorities. [Searching for his comm link and weapons, any sign of a ship to remove him from this planet and back to the First Order. It's only here at this irritatingly vague meeting that he has begun to accept those are not immediate options. He needs to bide his time.]

If you want to volunteer though, [He gestures with gloved hands toward the door while his eyes follow the movement of the natives. Difficult to trust a civilization with no governing system. ]

They're frightened children. I trust their fear is real, not the truth behind it. Frightened minds have a tendency to exaggerate.

[Interesting. There's not even a facade of outrage at the less than morally clean suggestion she'd made. That's refreshing though - it's different from the people she's used to dealing with at home and their fake morality. She half smiles, speaking candidly.]

Talking idiots into killing themselves isn't my schtick.

[Her smile turns self deprecating for just a flicker and then:]

But you do have a point there. Frightened minds do go to incredible extremes to ward off the Bogeyman. So what's your theory here then? That they're using us, people who supposedly can't die, to do their dirty work for them?

[Rey doesn't care for him at all, but she isn't going to waste an opportunity to actually speak. She can't show that she's excited to talk though, so she tries her best to look aloof and reluctant before answering.]

It would be foolish to believe any of it. Don't you think?

[She needs proof before she starts to believe anything they've been told.]
