[ota] walk a while with me
i. a heads up
[even with the confusion of newbies and delays (like the temporary overload of red dust from Ile Lacroix, and some people getting temporarily locked up because of Dead Man's Hate, whoops) the way over the bridge is finished. or, well, not finished finished, but they've run out of sand for the moment until they can convince the natives to let them access more.
Rosa's barely finished dusting her hands off before she's texting. any helpers who weren't already with her laying down the final touches to the singular long sandpath over Pont Corneille and down Rue Lafayette, and anyone who expressed interest to her in exploring once the thing was actually finished. it's done, she sends. come check it out. be careful.
if you're in neither group, but happen to catch them setting out, you're free to join in on the trip too!]
ii. and a journey
[the buildings on either side of the Rue Lafayette are old, weathered, but there's still a variety of supplies to find here and there, if they can be brought back quietly. old furniture can be salvaged. the ragged keepsakes of this abandoned civilization can be collected.
the highlight of the first trip out with Rosa, though, is coming upon someone in one of the buildings -- someone who wasn't in the first or second batch of confused folk in the recent room, and someone they don't recognize from the native community of Reims.
it's hard, chasing down someone perfectly silently: they'll lose sight of that person and won't be able to find them again for now. but they do find the place where they were staying to poke around in.
that place is "very much lived in, with a scattering of spare parts that could/have been used to build a noise making machine."]
iii. and after
[a little later, after they get back, Rosa does send a general notice to everyone's devices:
hey all:
1. we've put a path over the corneille bridge and down the thoroughfare on the other side to make explorations that way safer. feel free to use it but please be careful. if you want to help add to it or keep it maintained it's much appreciated.
2. it looks like there might still be people living in other parts of the city besides the one our community's based at. we found somebody in one of the buildings, but they ran off before we could ask them anything.
3. can anyone make heads or tails of this stuff
an image loads on screen after #3: it's a photo of the machine parts that were found. some people might find them familiar...?]
((i'll engage any replies directed to rosa, but please feel free to use as a general city explore log for your own purposes if you like! you can also handwave your character having helped with the sandpath as needed.))

you're interested in exploring too?

[She already has been, without finding much of anything useful. Eventually they're going to run out of supplies. It's inevitable.]
no subject
let me know if you want a buddy for it
looks like a lot of us are a bit stir crazy
no subject
will do. i'm Max

everything been all right? like...relatively
[it's hard to go 'has everything been all right' with no qualifiers to someone who's been upended and tossed into a place like this]
no subject
[Aside from having to be quiet all the time, she really doesn't have many complaints.]
what about you?
no subject
i kind of miss a lot of stuff though. mostly the animals.
no subject
did you have pets at home?
no subject
and nah no pets, landlord didn't allow them. i was working at an animal shelter before coming here though
no subject
oh. that's cool.
OTA; also lmk if you'd like something different
Art supplies, medications, and scrap parts, among other things. God knew he could use a smoke, and he wasn't picky enough at this point to even care if the taste was stale.
So there he was, outside some kind of French discount store, circling around back since the storefront would be too noisy to try and force. There was a window jarred open in back, but maybe it was a little too small or high for him to get through on his own. ]
Whattaya think? I can give ya a boost.
no subject
never thought i'd be this grateful for winding up small & skinny
sure, boost me up. maybe it's easier to unlock from inside

Majima knelt down to let Rosa step up on his shoulders; only when he felt her balance stabilize would he slowly rise, allowing her easy access to the window. Luckily, it wasn't that high, or this would be a significantly trickier proposition.
Unluckily, he couldn't really talk to her while doing this, so hopefully no complications arose.... ]
no subject
she gets her hands on the sill, hesitates, pushes; he can feel her tense up completely when it all gives the slightest, softest, barest creak of long disuse.
...nothing comes for them. they're lucky, this time. oh god she mouths to herself, and gets it the rest of the way open before either of them loses their nerve.]
no subject
Majima's entire body froze up at the sound of that creak, like he was waiting for the axe to fall, but... nothing. After a second or two, he relaxed slightly.
There wasn't much more at this point that he could do but keep steady and wait for her to either try unlocking the door, or signal for him to let her back down; look his heart couldn't take this. ]
no subject
window's open. the weight on Majima's shoulders eases as she heaves herself through -- careful, careful. theoretically, reasonably, a sound eater couldn't show up in the area ten seconds between one mistake and the next, but sound eaters don't follow theory and reason well at all. they sure don't know if they'll get lucky twice, and she's not getting someone else killed on a first foray out.
the floor's not that far down. she lands noiselessly and then peers back through for a moment. sorry about that, her phone flashes. be back soon
at least there does still seem to be stuff in this abandoned shop, she picks her way through it to the door -- just a regular bolt, not anything heavy-duty, thank god, and the alarm system is long dead. she dunks oil all over the mechanism before she risks turning it.
success. front door's open. she props it open and hurries back around to find Majima, flashing him a thumbs up when he comes back into view.]
no subject
[ he mouthed, returning the gesture. The back of the store was filled with old boxes, cleaning supplies, and dust. While Majima didn't try to open these right away, it looked like there were the unmistakable shape of shoeboxes along with the bulkier, more ambiguous containers. ]
Looks like this place didn't get picked over much.

it looks like they'd been living in the area for a while so it was their ground, too. hard to match that when you're barefoot and surprised
no subject
I wonder if that means there are more out in the city.
no subject
on the other someone just gave me more info about those machine parts and this person might have tried to sabotage the reims community, which means we actually may have to worry about sound eaters and at least one hostile dude running around the city
what a headache
no subject
[Selfish people don't wish to die. Or perhaps this person might have... a fascination of sorts with the Sound Eaters. She's honestly surprised a full on cult hasn't sprung up.]
It's enough to make you want to drink.
no subject
i'm not philosophical enough for that discussion
dont think i'm not tempted by the drinking thing though. just got a little put off by the way it made everyone act at that one party recently though.
were you there actually? that was so so weird
no subject
I was there. I did no drinking.
I appreciate the hospitality our hosts show us, but I know better than to accept a drink with some sort of inducement in it. [other people are not as cautious, but it made for an interesting night.]
Everything about this place is weird.

I've seen something like that before. Rey and I found a noise-making machine in Verdrel Square during the rain. We did wonder who'd put it there.
no subject
thanks for the info now i'm glad we took the parts
where's the machine now, do you know?
no subject
Rey has it, you can ask her.
no subject
[she's spoken to Rey before, at least on the network, but they didn't manage to get introduced.]
& just curious, did you wind up having something else going on? i thought you'd be there once the path was set up
no subject
[That's one message. There's a short pause before he sends the next:]
Jessica killed me. Again.
no subject
oh jeez what happened this time
[nailed it]
no subject
Much the same as last time. No provocation. She attacked me in my own home.
