INTRO LOG #1

INTRO LOG #1

Muzzle and Mute
Content Warnings: Disorientation, memory loss, confusion
Themes: Arrival, survival, exploration, horror

You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. You're disoriented and lethargic, unable to grasp onto a single thought. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits. By the time they’re through, you will have begun to come back to yourself.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Led out of the room in a line, you’re taken down a short hallway and into another, much larger room. There’s a woman waiting for you there, a child hugging her leg, and a cloth bag in her hands. She reaches in and pulls out a device, passes one to each of you. Once finished, she begins to move both hands in graceful gestures, a language. One of the people who helped you lifts their device and the screen lights up, tracks the woman’s hands. Letters appear on the screen and you understand the device’s purpose. She tells you what she knows and it’s not much.

This world is haunted. Noise attracts them, so it is not allowed. Communication is through body language, soundless writing, and the device. She tells you that your feet must be light and your mouth never used. There is a community outside these doors, where you can survive together, but only if you agree to one thing: complete and total silence. You'll have time to talk it over. You may ask one question and receive one answer.

Acceptance allows you to journey outside. The ground is marked in pathways of sand, lining the paths to each building and everywhere in-between. You notice that the locals hold their devices always, aloft and glance to it often. It will not vibrate or make a sound to signal a message. Notices appear. Rules. Guidelines. Feet on the sand and never anywhere else. To open a door you brush your fingers along the hinges - oiled and you may enter. If not, take the brush from the can sitting nearby and coat the metal with the dark liquid.

Now, you're to settle into your new home.

The Man in the Hat
Content Warnings: Heavy lifting, following the rules, alcoholism
Themes: Moving in, survival, exploration, horror

Once you’ve claimed a room for yourself, it’s time to acclimate to the community. Natives will ask what you need and take you along the sandpaths to different areas in the city to gather supplies - furniture and the like. Heavier items will require assistance and will take longer. Houses are mostly empty so if you and your housemates need something, you’ll have to carry it and put it inside the home. Do not make any noise or the natives will refuse to help you. Getting to know your housemates is key to a smooth transition. They are going through what you are right now; take the time to get to know them. Make house rules.

As the first day gives way to night, the natives can be seen moving at a faster pace outside. They’re hurried, though not frightened. Some even smile at you. When the sun sets behind the ruins of what was once picturesque Reims, your device will signal that it’s time to meet at the center of the community. There, natives will stop each person and give them a small gift - a trinket, a token to show that they are trying their best to make all the new arrivals feel at home. These are all items from the character’s home or from another character's home (they will not be anything that belongs to anyone else). Small, soundless and either something taken during the application process or something brand new. They will have no powers to speak of and are meant to be a momento. If asked, the natives found them the same way they found each of you.

Then the party starts. Sort of. A soundless, stitled kind of celebration. Fun is meant to be had, but it’s not an overly joyous occasion. The natives simply don’t know how to cut loose. There will be extra food in the form of one and two; Phillipa even brought some of her homemade bread. If you stumble across a man wearing a hat, the only man in town who does, and agree to go with him when he offers to show you his house - he’ll gift you with a jar of hooch; it’ll burn on the way down.

Sound Eaters
Content Warnings: Threat, danger
Themes: Survival, exploration, horror, game plot

It’s the second day of your stay, and the natives call for an emergency meeting at the Town Hall. Everyone is paired off (see below) and are asked to walk the perimeter looking for anything out of place and patching any areas that might have been affected by weather. Once finished, the same is done on the inside, and when the community leader is satisfied, the main hall is opened up so that everyone can congregate. Characters, during this time only, are allowed to make sound. This is so that the natives can explain why silence is so necessary...

The Sound Eaters.

In an effort not to frighten everyone, the natives won’t go into the history just yet, but they will warn that when someone makes a sound, it attracts them. They don’t know what they look like because they are so fast. If you’re too loud, then in the blink of an eye, you’ll go through a room reset. This is because either the natives ‘silenced’ you or the Sound Eaters have. They will explain that the room came at the same time the Sound Eaters did and that it doesn’t work for the natives. Sometimes, it doesn’t work on new arrivals. Death, for those born in this world, is permanent. If you attract them, you’ll get someone killed. Hence the need for no noise. During the meeting, the natives will tell each character of their own experiences. Their losses. The families they have left and how they’d do anything to keep them alive. They don’t know if you’ll be reset, but is that a risk you’re willing to take? The meeting will last a few hours and will end on a somber, ominous note - at the end of the month, they are taking everyone to meet them.

[That's more or less a common response, though most interrogation questions run along the lines of "What's your serial number?" or "Present your identification." Lu Li isn't sure how to respond to this man. If she's honest, will he want to scrap her for her motherboard...?

She decides to play it safe. She fully turns around to face him and takes out her device.]

YES. WHO ARE YOU?

[Remus doesn't try to hide the picture when Lup comes up to him, and in fact turns it more towards her so she can see it better. Or, she could if she weren't wearing prescription glasses she doesn't need.]

It's a magical photograph. I took it a few days ago.

[Despite the freedom to make noise, Remus' voice is still low and soft.]

[ that last question earns a stare like it was a really stupid thing to ask. becauase to him, it is. imagining a world where the existence of ajin isn't considered common sense is kind of dizzying, and he scowls as he tries to figure out how to respond. explaining this feels very strange. explaining it in a way that doesn't implicate himself is even weirder. ]

Who knows what they want. Or why they exist. Ajin don't know they're ajin until they die once, and then come back. They're just there. A few dozen of them worldwide.

[ tanaka looks uncomfortable saying this, and he clears his throat a little before looking back to giorno. ]

What kinda bizarre circumstances have you been in? You sound pretty calm hearing this.

[Even if she was being curt, he wouldn't particularly mind. He doesn't intend to be an authority, here, it's just frustrating to not have a plan to approach the situation from.]

Depending on the skillsets of people involved, I'd say... [he closes his eyes, ticking off fingers as he considers each]

We need more information about the surrounding area. We need to stay safe while doing so, which requires people with proper physical conditioning, training, and equipment. [In other words, more combatants and less civilians. He couldn't get a proper count of who was what just from looking, so he adds,] Any sort of history of the place or the arrival of the sound eaters may be useful, as well.

And... [he spares a glance at the younger members of the room, the ones that are, or look like, children, who shouldn't be here at all, really.] Anyone who wants a way out but can't contribute to those efforts can simply focus on helping the town, of course.

[she doesn't actually want to waste it herself, but she definitely needed a minute to recover first; it's easy enough to see where Lys got the impression.]

its' okay it's really okay! i was just going to takeit apart again

[which...well, that still leaves one with peach-pickle bread, but probably that's less intense than. what she just put in her mouth.]

if you really want it you can have it though?? i jsut feel bad giving someone something i already bit innto

[She turns as she sees the movement that was supposed to be a wave, and gets to witness all those blankets falling to the floor. She presses her lips together to stop the small laugh, breathing sharply through her nose.

Then she's walking over with a wave of her own, bending down to help him pick up the blankets.]

[ It almost seems as if this magic involved transferring the will of the user directly into the object, like a more controlled type of wish. The man doesn't exude a type of aether that he can recognize, so it's definitely from another world.

He'll try to rise and give Remus a polite nod, though it's hampered by how his height is almost equal to that of the ceiling. ]

I was wondering if you could tell me how you did all of that.

hey mods!

so, the devices they can use. they can type to each other on them, i assume, like virtual pen and paper?
if so, i'm assuming the keyboard will have a way for naruto to input in japanese characters? will someone set that up for him or will it be idiot proof enough for naruto to figure it out?

second, if naruto does type in japanese and shows it to someone, will it translate for them either on his device or if they hold up theirs to scan it?

also, regarding their question, do they have to ask it then and there or can they hold off and wait to ask it later on, once they've found out a little more?

The Man in the Hat
[The jumpsuit is unflattering, and Hux looks as uncomfortable in it as he feels. He spends the party watching the natives closely and eating the peaches only after seeing others eat them earlier.

They aren't terrible, and don't appear to be poisoned. He has a different jar tucked unopened under his arm from an earlier excursion to a stranger's houses. He had been hoping for something more useful but he would save the alcohol for a necessary occasion. Like later that night.

As he moves through the people he looks for anyone familiar. Someone he saw in the room, or a housemate, or just a strangely familiar face. He uses the device like a datapad, pressing past frustration and accepting the resources currently available to him.]

Has anyone mentioned where we might learn this visual language?

Closed to Eleanor - Paired Patrol
[Hux takes the patrol as seriously as a walk of his ship to ensure everything is in order. It's by necessity a silent affair until they come across an area that surprisingly is in need of attention.

A pair of shutters hang loose, knocking whenever a breeze slips between the buildings. He makes his way over there after a quick halting touch of the back of his hand to the side of her arm. Tools were not in handy supply from the natives, and saws were likely out of the question, meaning they would need to get creative, but he presses a hand to one, attempting to see if it could be straightened and repaired or needed to be removed. He looks to her before looking for his device.]

We need something to either loosen or tighten the screws.

Sound Eaters
[The ability to speak, even temporarily, is a welcome one. He keeps his voice low and his words a whisper, but he makes full use of this temporary reprieve. It doesn't even matter who is around him, for once Hux is on the more talkative side.]

How much of this do you actually believe?

She studies the picture carefully, taking in every detail. ]

[She nods, because she agrees with all of this. It's good to know he's not impetuous or rash. That's useful.]

Information is likely to be the hardest to get. The locals are basically refusing to give out details.

[Which is really suspicious, and she doesn't like it at all. It does scream of manipulation.]

I get that they're afraid. It seems completely real, but... you'd think they'd give us more to go on, so we can be better prepared, at the very least.

[Tired as Tuan may be, that reply gets a small smile.]

You'd have to be a special kind of person to start feeling sorry for them, yeah.

[Her own world is filled with these kinds of "special people." Compassion - they'd called it at home. Kindness for your fellow human being. All of it suffocating and unbearable.]

I wonder how many people here will fall for it anyway.
dryeyes: yes it does kinda mean you’re important [<user name="if">] (i hate crying in front of people)

[personal profile] dryeyes 2018-01-16 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
[One hand grips the other more tightly, a sort of grim gesture.]

That sounds extremely related, then. [While correlation didn't mean causation, no one in the room would blame them for making the logical jump there. The sound eaters came, and that room was "uncovered."]

In that case... [he shifts he gaze, peering at the natives in the room out of the corner of his eyes.] We'll have to pick up information about them as we go. Nothing near the village. It sounds like it's a death wish to pursue them. [But they'd have to. The details of that would simply have to wait until it was just outsiders, and people willing to take risks.]
lunisolar: (and we make our mistakes)

[Well hold on it's only been a day! Give the old dog a chance to learn the new trick why don't you]

I suppose we'd better get used to it, though I'd rather not have to. Do you have any experience with magic that can bring so many people to another place and time like this?

arrival;

[ frank doesn't care about his clothes, but his boots are much harder to part with. those boots had seen him through war, both overseas and stateside. through thick and thin. he wants to be angry, at having everything stripped away from him, again; but what comes instead is a cold complacency. an acceptance that no matter how much or how little he has, it will always be taken from him when he least expects it.

they tell him not to speak and he doesn't. frank didn't have anything to say anyway. he snatches the device they give him with a glower, slotting himself into the crowd to watch the woman's speech. and he watches her more than the screen, though he understands very little of what she's saying. he really doesn't care, and it really doesn't matter. he's merely moved from one prison and into another, so really? time to do what he does best.

survive.]

[ if approached by another new arrival, frank won't be very willing to engage. he types a generic message for anyone who might pester him too much. ] Go ask someone who gives a fuck. [ his face is badly bruised, but that's par for his course. it doesn't seem to bother him, though he hopes it makes it less likely for anyone to push him too far. ]

house six & the party;

[ he doesn't hesitate to claim the garage, though he has nothing but menacing looks to back himself up. in his defense, it is super menacing. this garage is his now, back the fuck off. once he's staked his claim, he ventures back out, noticing that people are starting to gather.

a native presses a photograph into his hands, and his breathing stutters. he could have anticipated a picture of his own family, the picture he kept by his bed for so long as a reminder. the same picture that's now pressed between his mattress and bedframe at home. no, this picture is of four people. a family just like his was, but still whole and alive and perfect. frank swallows and traces their faces, but if anyone comes up to him he'll hurriedly tuck it into his jumpsuit.

though he wants nothing more than to bail and go back to ignoring everyone, he's hungry. painfully so. he takes a jar of peaches and goes to sit as far from the crowd as he can manage to eat it. ]

moving in;

[ being a man of few needs himself, he keeps an eye out for people who need help carrying things, especially children and women. once he has a bed, a drafting table, and a bookcase in the garage he'll start carting things to and from town for everyone else like a workhorse. he doesn't wait to be asked or thanked, his own device is nowhere to be seen. if someone is struggling, he'll just pick up their items and start walking, expecting that they'll eventually show him where they go.

this lasts well into the evening and he's exhausted, not that it matters. he collapses under a shade tree near his house and tries to take his rest while he can get it. frank pulls out the little jar he'd gotten from hat guy and takes a swig. oh yeah, that's rough. he likes it. ]

sound eaters;

[ they're told they can talk during this big town meeting, but frank doesn't. he picks a seat in the back row and crosses his arms over his chest. monsters, cool. his favorite. when they start assigning partners he'll just slip out the back... no one will notice him!! shut up. for a silent place, there sure was a lot of human interaction. he's over it already. ]

[personal profile] tropism 2018-01-16 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
[ that's an odd way of describing it. he makes it sound like they were just watching people, waiting for a time for them to exist before they fade again to the background. not much of a threat, but then again, he's not telling him a lot to begin with.

so he'll move on from there. when he feels like talking again - and giorno is fairly certain that should any similarities arise from the monsters in this town and his ajin - he would hear more.

as for that question, well. where should he even begin. ]

Back in my world, people develop many different abilities under duress.

Mine happens to be healing, to a certain extent. Creating life is another, and it's not really as exciting as it sounds.

Different personalities tend to react to their newfound abilities in different ways, some more hostile than others, and I've been in many different petty or seriously dangerous fights where it was settled primarily based on how you fight with your powers.

And if I'm calm, it's only because I can't quite visualize or understand what it's like being with Ajin. I'm sure things will be different if I did.

... It would make sense if they didn't want us to be prepared. If they want us to live here, stay here... they might want us as afraid as they are.

I don't have concrete evidence to support that, though.

Well, if death weren't a possibility it wouldn't be as exciting.

That being said, I'm Giorno Giovanna. Should we go through with the ambush, I can be a healer, though fighting is no problem with me as well.

Protecting the town and finding out what we can - for our safety, and so that those of us who want to go back, can do so safely - that's as good of a start for anyone who's new to living here. I'm for it.
