What's happening: soundproofing people's houses, open to prompts, do whatever floats your boat

[ tetora was given, in exchange for his knives and other items, a task to do — soundproofing maintenance. it's an easy enough job, if tedious, but tetora hates owing people anything as much as he hates being chased, and he hates being chased a lot. so work it is — tetora sets out, door to door, and waits for residents to notice him before he gets to work.
if you find someone randomly loitering at your doorstep at some point this month? it's this guy, and he's here to protect your house from noise. ]

[ At this point, most of the loose odds and ends had been tucked away, leaving clean working space around most of the basement. A couch and table sat further in, near the center of the room, but for now there wasn't much in the way of extra decoration. What Majima really needed was a sign, but he'd need to get Will's help for that.
Well, he didn't need to, but it seemed like Will would do a good job. ]
Got mine back, too. Dunno why they were holdin' onto it as long as they did; ain't like it's got any parts to rattle around.

tetora places his things quietly on the floor, and starts unpacking with efficient gestures. an oil can, soft cloths, bits and bobbles for padding, even a roll of masking tape. after that it's a series of muffled squeaks as tetora gets behind the counter, wiggling the wood panels slowly. there's a terrifying moment when one of the planks screech to conversation level - but it's quickly hushed by a quick slap and a garbled hiss.
he just hammered his finger for the sake of silence. ]

Wow, amazing. Look how conscientious this dude was. Majima bent over to help Tetora engage one of the panels -- might as well help out. ]
You must really want that stash.
They gave me my favorite knife back. Didn't feel right, walkin' around without it on me.
[ There was a sort of comforting weight to it that Majima had become accustomed to -- and by now its shape and balance was so familiar to him that drawing it was more akin to rolling up his sleeve than taking out a weapon.

[ they continue on working in relative silence, save for the errant squeak or two as panels inevitably squeeze tight against each other. a few more panels and the counter won't make a sound even if majima decided to suplex a sumo wrestler on it. no assurances for the wrestler, though. ]

[ It might sound defeatist or whatever, but Majima didn't really have a problem with that sort of career trajectory in general theory. Society simply didn't make room for everyone at the top. There were a few reserved spaces for those with the connections and temperament to live the glitzy, privileged lifestyle, and everyone else just sort of fell into what was left.
And for those well-suited for the nightlife? Nothing inherently wrong with it. Or at least not enough to lose sleep over. ]
Actually, that hostess club work... think that's the longest I ever had a straight job. Technically, I'm still the manager.
